Chapter 1

"Who on earth are you calling?" Marvin Cooper snapped. "A helicopter? Seriously, Hannah Huston. Have you been reading too many trashy romance novels that they've fried your brain?"

Marvin stared at me coldly, his lips curling into a deeply mocking sneer. As he flicked his custom lighter open and shut, the sharp metallic click sounded harsh in the spacious living room.

Alyssa hid behind him and covered her mouth in a sweet, delicate giggle. "Don't talk about Hannah like that, Marvin. She's probably just scared. Taking the fall means spending years in prison, after all.

"She grew up in an orphanage and hasn't seen much of the world, so, understandably, she's fantasizing about a romance story with some billionaire CEO."

Though her voice was soft and gentle, her words were as poisonous and sharp as venom-coated needles.

Clutching the phone, now with a completely black screen, I shot a cold stare at the despicable pair standing before me.

"I'm not joking, Marvin. I'm not signing that confession, and I'm not taking the fall for a crime."

Marvin shot to his feet and came to me in a few big strides. He towered over me, staring down with eyes full of contempt and a sense of superiority.

"Enough with the pathetic act, Hannah. Do you honestly think pretending to be stubborn is going to make me go soft on you?

"I'm telling you, Alyssa's hands are meant for playing the piano and can't be stained by the slightest imperfection. Who do you think you are, compared to her?

"You literally owe your life to me! If I hadn't been giving you your monthly allowances, you would've starved to death on the streets years ago!"

He reached out to jab me violently in my shoulder. "Now is the time to pay your debt. Go to the police station and take the blame. I'll obviously get you out once the storm blows over."

I stumbled a step back from his harsh jabs, feeling a wave of nausea roll through my stomach.

For three years, I had burned my hands cooking and cleaning for him. For Alyssa, I had donated my blood over and over again, until I became severely anemic and fainted from exhaustion, all because of a single sentence he had told me, "Alyssa has a rare blood type, and yours is a match. Save her."

I had foolishly believed I could melt his frozen heart, only to realize I had been caring for a venomous snake instead.

"Are you delusional, Marvin? I met his gaze without the slightest fear and continued, "I already said I'm not signing it. Alyssa ran into someone with her car, so she's the one who should go to prison for it."

When Alyssa heard that, her eyes immediately turned red, and tears started rolling down her cheeks like pearls from a broken string.

"Look at her, Marvin… How could she curse me like that? I'm scared. Who's going to stay with you if I actually end up behind bars?"

She clung to Marvin's sleeve tightly and buried her face in his chest, while he wrapped his arms around her in distress.

When he turned to look at me, the look in his eyes instantly turned dark and menacing.

Alyssa's eyes were dull and lifeless. There were no longer any traces of her delicate, pure first love persona. On top of the hit-and-run, subsequent investigations uncovered multiple counts of financial fraud. With the charges combined, she was sentenced to ten years in prison. When she looked at me, a complicated mix of emotions flickered through her eyes, full of envy, regret, and deep fear."What are you doing here? To laugh at me?" she rasped.I calmly looked at her and said, "I just wanted to see how the arrogant Ms. Evans, who used to treat other people's lives like absolute garbage, is doing these days."Alyssa bit her lips hard, and tears couldn't help but spill over. "You won, Hannah, and I completely lost. I never should've messed with you… If I hadn't forced you to take the fall, Marvin might not have gone bankrupt, and I wouldn't be here, locked up in prison…"I let out a cold laugh and cut her repentful confession short. "You're wrong. You ended up here today not be

I stared down at Marvin, my eyes completely devoid of warmth."You look truly disgusting, groveling and begging for forgiveness, Marvin."My icy tone made him flinch. When he looked up at me, his face was streaked with rainwater and mud, which made him look utterly miserable."You can't be this heartless, Hannah. Have you forgotten the last three years? You made soup for me every night and burned your hands taking care of me…"He was desperately playing the sentimental card, hoping to revive the foolish devotion I once had for him."I have chronic stomach ulcers, and the doctors made it clear that I can't be exposed to the cold. Hannah, you used to worry about me more than anyone. Please just let me in, okay? I'm genuinely freezing to death…"I watched his pathetic performance in silence, my lips curling into a cruel smirk. "Marvin, your stomach ulcers were completely cured three years ago."While Marvin froze and stared up at me blankly, I continued, "How do you think your seve

Alyssa completely broke down. She had always believed Marvin could clean up any mess, just like he always did. She never imagined that she would be publicly arrested in front of the entire Ashwood elite circle."No! I don't want to go to prison!" she cried. "Marvin, save me! Please save me!'"She desperately grabbed Marvin's arm, her nails nearly digging into his flesh.Right now, Marvin's face was paler than a corpse. When he looked around at the business tycoons, who used to treat him with respect but now looked at him with nothing but pure disdain and mockery, he knew that he was doomed. The ugliest side of human nature was laid bare in a life-or-death crisis. With all his strength, Marvin shoved Alyssa away and sent her crashing onto the floor. "Get away from me, you crazy woman!"He turned toward the officers and anxiously sold her out to clear his name."I'm innocent, officers! She was the one driving the car when the accident happened. I was drunk and asleep in the passe

Marvin irritably yanked at his tie. "Shut up! Just keep looking!"Suddenly, Alyssa's gaze locked on me across the crowd. She rubbed her eyes in disbelief before tugging hard at Marvin's sleeve."Look, Marvin! Isn't that Hannah, that bitch?"Following her gaze, Marvin froze. The woman standing in the center of the crowd, surrounded by influential figures and carrying herself with elegance, was me, the woman he had treated as a maid for the past three years.Alyssa's face was contorted in jealousy. "What is she even doing here, all dressed up like a slut? And how much does her necklace cost?"Marvin, she must have found some old sugar daddy behind your back and leech off him just to sneak inside!"Her words were a massive blow to Marvin's pride. He couldn't accept that the woman who had once looked up to him and relied on him now stood at a height he could never hope to reach.Shoving past the crowd, he stormed up to me in a fit of rage."Hannah! Have you no shame?"Marvin's roa

The next morning, Cooper Group woke up to an unprecedented, catastrophic disaster. As soon as the stock market opened, Cooper Group's stock was met with a massive short-selling attack by a wave of mysterious capital, which sent their stocks plummeting to their daily low.Next, the partners behind three of Cooper Group's major ongoing projects simultaneously announced their unilateral termination of their agreements. They were determined to sever all ties, even if it meant paying hefty penalties. The final blow came when several of their primary banking partners suddenly announced they were calling in their loans ahead of schedule. Cooper Group's cash flow immediately collapsed.Sitting in the leather executive chair in Huston Group's CEO Office, I watched Cooper Group's stock price plunge on a giant screen with a cold smile tugging at my lips.My assistant walked in to report."Ms. Huston, Marvin has completely lost it. Edward adjusted his glasses and announced in a completely calm and emotionless voice, "The true culprit is this woman right here, Ms. Alyssa Evans."The officer took the documents. All he needed was a quick glance before the expression on his face completely changed. He whipped his head around and stared at Alyssa sharply."Ms. Alyssa Evans, we now have reason to suspect you of involvement in a hit-and-run case, as well as conspiring with others to fabricate evidence. Please come with us immediately for questioning!"Colors drained from Alyssa's face. She was so terrified that she started trembling with fear as she desperately hid behind Marvin."No! It wasn't me! Tell them, Marvin! Tell them I didn't do it!"Marvin's expression turned ugly, too. He slapped away the copies of the evidence Edward had handed over and snarled through clenched teeth, "Fake! It's all fabricated! Who sent you people? How dare you mess with me in Ashwood! You must be courting death!"He charged forward
