Chapter 4

Author: Cheesy Cloud
"Even if Hannah dies, then so be it," Marvin said indifferently.

I stared at him. This was the face of the man I had once been hopelessly in love with, the same face that now filled me with absolute disgust.

"Do you really have to go this far, Marvin?" I asked.

"This far?"

Like he had just heard a joke, Marvin grabbed a bottle of whiskey from the table and poured it over my head. The icy liquor ran down my hair, stinging the cuts on my face.

"You call this going too far? You've disgusted me for three years, Hannah. This is just the interest!"

He smashed the empty bottle onto the floor and sent glass shards flying in every direction.

"Let me tell you something. I've had the security footage from the scene 'reprocessed.' The current airtight evidence shows that you were driving the car. The police are on their way to arrest you right now!"

I wiped the liquor from my face and looked at him coldly. "Aren't you afraid of karma for fabricating evidence?"

Marvin burst into a wild, arrogant fit of laughter. "Karma? I, Marvin Cooper, am the damn law in Ashwood! If I want you to live, you live, and if I want you dead, you damn well die!"

He grabbed Alyssa by the wrist, his eyes full of malice. "You're going to jail tonight. Not even God can save you."

I took a deep breath and turned to leave, just as he roared behind me, "Stop! Did I say you could leave?"

I ignored him and quickened my pace as I bolted out of the club. The moment I burst through the main doors, I spotted several police cars with flashing lights speeding toward the slums.

Marvin hadn't lied. He had indeed called the police.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Nathaniel's number. "Nate, I can't hold out much longer."

On the other end of the line, Nathaniel's voice sounded deep and cold. "Don't be scared, Hannah. I've arrived."

I sprinted all the way back and managed to reach the slums just ahead of the police cars.

Just as I ran up to my dilapidated rental apartment, several police cars screeched to a stop and completely blocked the narrow alley. Blinding high beams flashed on me and nearly made it impossible for me to open my eyes.

The car doors opened, and several police officers quickly stepped out with dead serious expressions. Immediately after, a black Maybach slowly rolled to a stop behind the police cars.

Marvin stepped out with Alyssa in his arms, looking as though he had arrived to watch a show.

Dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, he didn't even flinch as he stepped into the muddy puddles with his leather shoes.

"Officers, that's her," Marvin said, pointing at me. His tone was determined and cold. "She was the one who hit someone on Coastal Street last night and fled the scene. She used to work as my maid, but she stole my car keys and took the car out for a joyride, only to cause such a disaster."

Beside him, Alyssa pretended to wipe her tears away. "How could you be so foolish, Ms. Huston? You have to take responsibility if you hit someone with a car. What good does hiding here do?"

The lead officer walked up to me and drew out a pair of handcuffs. "Hannah Huston, correct? We suspect you're involved in a hit-and-run that occurred last night. Please come with us."

I gave Marvin a cold look and said, "You're really something, Marvin. I can't believe you even came up with an auto theft excuse."

Marvin smugly raised an eyebrow. "The evidence is ironclad, Hannah. You can talk all the trash you want right now, but it won't change a thing. Just confess nicely and save yourself some trouble."

Stepping closer, he lowered his voice so only the two of us could hear. "I told you. You're worth less than a stray dog after leaving me. This is what happens when you defy my words."

An officer stepped forward and grabbed my wrist.

With a sharp click, the cold handcuff was about to lock around my wrist, but I didn't resist. Instead, I looked up at the pitch-black night sky.

The timing was perfect.

Alyssa's eyes were dull and lifeless. There were no longer any traces of her delicate, pure first love persona. On top of the hit-and-run, subsequent investigations uncovered multiple counts of financial fraud. With the charges combined, she was sentenced to ten years in prison. When she looked at me, a complicated mix of emotions flickered through her eyes, full of envy, regret, and deep fear."What are you doing here? To laugh at me?" she rasped.I calmly looked at her and said, "I just wanted to see how the arrogant Ms. Evans, who used to treat other people's lives like absolute garbage, is doing these days."Alyssa bit her lips hard, and tears couldn't help but spill over. "You won, Hannah, and I completely lost. I never should've messed with you… If I hadn't forced you to take the fall, Marvin might not have gone bankrupt, and I wouldn't be here, locked up in prison…"I let out a cold laugh and cut her repentful confession short. "You're wrong. You ended up here today not be

I stared down at Marvin, my eyes completely devoid of warmth."You look truly disgusting, groveling and begging for forgiveness, Marvin."My icy tone made him flinch. When he looked up at me, his face was streaked with rainwater and mud, which made him look utterly miserable."You can't be this heartless, Hannah. Have you forgotten the last three years? You made soup for me every night and burned your hands taking care of me…"He was desperately playing the sentimental card, hoping to revive the foolish devotion I once had for him."I have chronic stomach ulcers, and the doctors made it clear that I can't be exposed to the cold. Hannah, you used to worry about me more than anyone. Please just let me in, okay? I'm genuinely freezing to death…"I watched his pathetic performance in silence, my lips curling into a cruel smirk. "Marvin, your stomach ulcers were completely cured three years ago."While Marvin froze and stared up at me blankly, I continued, "How do you think your seve

Alyssa completely broke down. She had always believed Marvin could clean up any mess, just like he always did. She never imagined that she would be publicly arrested in front of the entire Ashwood elite circle."No! I don't want to go to prison!" she cried. "Marvin, save me! Please save me!'"She desperately grabbed Marvin's arm, her nails nearly digging into his flesh.Right now, Marvin's face was paler than a corpse. When he looked around at the business tycoons, who used to treat him with respect but now looked at him with nothing but pure disdain and mockery, he knew that he was doomed. The ugliest side of human nature was laid bare in a life-or-death crisis. With all his strength, Marvin shoved Alyssa away and sent her crashing onto the floor. "Get away from me, you crazy woman!"He turned toward the officers and anxiously sold her out to clear his name."I'm innocent, officers! She was the one driving the car when the accident happened. I was drunk and asleep in the passe

Marvin irritably yanked at his tie. "Shut up! Just keep looking!"Suddenly, Alyssa's gaze locked on me across the crowd. She rubbed her eyes in disbelief before tugging hard at Marvin's sleeve."Look, Marvin! Isn't that Hannah, that bitch?"Following her gaze, Marvin froze. The woman standing in the center of the crowd, surrounded by influential figures and carrying herself with elegance, was me, the woman he had treated as a maid for the past three years.Alyssa's face was contorted in jealousy. "What is she even doing here, all dressed up like a slut? And how much does her necklace cost?"Marvin, she must have found some old sugar daddy behind your back and leech off him just to sneak inside!"Her words were a massive blow to Marvin's pride. He couldn't accept that the woman who had once looked up to him and relied on him now stood at a height he could never hope to reach.Shoving past the crowd, he stormed up to me in a fit of rage."Hannah! Have you no shame?"Marvin's roa

Edward adjusted his glasses and announced in a completely calm and emotionless voice, "The true culprit is this woman right here, Ms. Alyssa Evans."The officer took the documents. All he needed was a quick glance before the expression on his face completely changed. He whipped his head around and stared at Alyssa sharply."Ms. Alyssa Evans, we now have reason to suspect you of involvement in a hit-and-run case, as well as conspiring with others to fabricate evidence. Please come with us immediately for questioning!"Colors drained from Alyssa's face. She was so terrified that she started trembling with fear as she desperately hid behind Marvin."No! It wasn't me! Tell them, Marvin! Tell them I didn't do it!"Marvin's expression turned ugly, too. He slapped away the copies of the evidence Edward had handed over and snarled through clenched teeth, "Fake! It's all fabricated! Who sent you people? How dare you mess with me in Ashwood! You must be courting death!"He charged forward
