Chapter 2

Author: Roundy Cat
I made my way back home in heavy silence, locking myself in my room the second I stepped inside.

I opened Harlow's profile. Her feed was overflowing with photos of the two of them.

[Heading to the Grand Canyon with this dork! He swore he’d take a picture of a lifetime for me, but ended up snapping a hundred goofy shots instead, haha!]

She posted a photo of the heart-shaped breakfast he had made for her.

[Had a stomachache last night, so he said he’d bring me breakfast every day from now on and let me eat in his car. Hehe, caught myself a househusband!]

[Oh my god! I only casually mentioned wanting a Leica camera, and he actually delivered it to my bed the very next morning! So touched!]

…

My fingers kept scrolling, growing weaker with every swipe.

A while back, when taking candid photos was trending, I had begged him to take a few for me too. But after snapping just one photo, he lost his patience. "That’s enough. Who are you even striking those weird poses for?"

He was also a total neat freak and never allowed me to eat in his car.

Once, when my blood sugar dropped and I felt dizzy, I unwrapped a roll in the passenger seat, and he blew up at me.

I apologized profusely and quickly got out, wolfing the bread down by the side of the road. Before I could even finish, he sped off without me.

And just yesterday, on my birthday, I had been so full of anticipation for his gift, only for him to show up empty-handed, claiming he forgot.

He had said, "Is a birthday really that big of a deal? Madison, you’re getting more and more childish by the day."

…

The difference between being loved or not by him was brutally obvious.

I realized now that his heart had drifted away long ago. I was the fool still standing in the same spot, happily planning a future with him.

A sharp ding from my phone snapped me out of my thoughts.

Harlow had sent me the link to those tights, followed by a message.

[Don't think I don't see what you're trying to do with my boyfriend. But too bad, George loves me.]

[You're just a nobody with nothing to your name. How do you expect to compete with me? I have a better degree, a hotter body, and a richer family. What is there left for you to fight for?]

Then, a message from George popped up.

[I couldn't say much in front of her earlier... but for the sake of our years of friendship, please don't say anything to her, okay?]

[She's really sensitive. I'm afraid she'll be upset if she finds out.]

[Madison, can we talk?]

My vision blurred instantly.

He was terrified that she would break down, but what about me?

With trembling fingers, I buried my face in the blanket as the tears finally poured out, unable to hold it in any longer.

On my wedding day, the venue was packed with guests.Up on stage, the host asked Ralph and me to share the story of how we fell in love. When the microphone was handed to him, Ralph spoke smoothly and confidently."I actually fell for her back when I was in ninth grade. That year, when the school held its singing competition, I happened to catch her performance on stage."The raw emotion and sincerity in her voice instantly drew me in. Before I even realized it, I had stayed for her entire set, utterly captivated and dying to meet her."On an impulse, I snapped a quick photo of her. That photo ended up being my prized possession for years."He turned his gaze toward me."Looking back, fate has been incredibly kind to me. It gave this long, quiet crush of mine a beautiful answer at last. And today, the girl from that stage is standing right beside me as my wife."…As he looked down at me with a smile, tears welled in my eyes.In that moment, the poetic words rang so true. "

From that day on, it was as if George had turned into a completely different person. He started dropping by my house constantly, finding any excuse to stay for dinner. He’d spend hours playing chess with my dad, or helping my mom out in the kitchen.A few times, he even cooked meals for me, carefully packing them into a lunchbox so I could take them to work.My mom, completely in the dark, even laughed and teased him about it."Who knew George had such a talent for cooking? His food tastes even better than mine. Honestly, if Madison didn't already have a boyfriend, I’d almost think he was trying to court her!"Frustration swelled in my chest. I picked up the lunchbox he had prepared and slammed it straight onto the floor. The lid popped off, sending cooked food and sauce splattering everywhere across the tiles.I was completely out of patience."Can you stop coming over to my house every single day? I have a boyfriend! I really don't want people to have the wrong idea about us.

George walked back home, completely dispirited.A few moments later, my phone lit up with a text from him.[If you did all this just to punish me, then congratulations. You got what you wanted.]I glanced at the message for a split second, then immediately locked my screen.I had to admit that when I first asked Ralph, part of me wanted revenge on George. But the more time I spent with Ralph, I discovered just how wonderful he truly was.He always remembered every little detail about me: that I hated cilantro and was deathly allergic to mangoes. Whenever I felt down, he would patiently listen and talk me through it.In the past, whenever I showed vulnerability around George, he only looked at me with irritation."Madison, you’re an adult. You need to learn how to control your emotions and stop treating me like your personal emotional dumpster!"So, I got good at hiding how I felt. I squeezed all my hurt deep down inside, quietly swallowing the pain all by myself. But Ralph act

I was at a loss for words. For the rest of the movie, I couldn't focus on the screen at all. My mind was totally consumed by the warmth of Ralph’s hand wrapped around mine. When the credits rolled, the crowd flooded the exits, separating Ralph and me. Out of nowhere, a hand grabbed my wrist. It was George, and he looked absolutely furious."Whose hand were you holding back there? How well do you even know him? Are you two already at the point where you just touch each other whenever you feel like it?""I don't even recognize you anymore, Madison. You followed me all the way to the movie theater, and then you turned around to hook up with some random guy? "Are you just doing this to spite me? Or do you honestly think that by degrading yourself like this, I’m going to feel sorry for you and take you back?"Anger flared in my chest, and I yanked my hand away."Whatever I do has absolutely nothing to do with you! Who are you to control me?"His face flushed red with rage. "Do your

By the time the kitten was warm and out of danger, two hours had passed.Ralph walked me down to my building, then suddenly pulled out his phone."Could I get your number? That way, I can keep you updated on how the kitten's doing."I added him, said goodbye, and turned to head upstairs, only to run right into George and Harlow.Harlow let out a smirk."Are you coming over to see George?"Well, your timing is pretty terrible. We're actually on our way out to the movies, and I don't even know if we'll be coming back tonight."I simply nodded, keeping my head down as I brushed past them into the lobby.Harlow's sweet, sickly voice echoed behind me."Oh darn, I totally forgot to ask if she wanted to come to the movies with us! Being all alone on Christmas is so lonely. She looks so pitiable, honestly. Thank goodness I have my baby with me!"She giggled, wrapping her arm tightly around George’s.…Just as I got back up to my door, my phone buzzed with a message from Ralph.I f

The kitten shivering in my arms was growing colder by the second.I swallowed hard and, putting all second thoughts aside, followed him into his place. As he opened the front door, I stepped into a spotless home. The interior was sleek and minimalist, decorated in shades of black, white, and gray. It was the classic, sharp look one would expect from a STEM guy.I slipped off my shoes at the entryway, and before I knew it, he had already run a basin of warm water in the bathroom."Bring the kitten in here," he called out.Warm steam filled the room, instantly fogging up my glasses. The moment my foot stepped into the bathroom, I tripped and lost my balance. Just as I was about to fall, a pair of warm, solid hands caught me, pulling me upright. As the steam cleared from my lenses, his handsome face came into focus right in front of mine.My heart skipped a beat.He offered a soft, reassuring smile. "Careful."I quickly straightened up, my cheeks burning. He gently took the kitt
