Chapter 1

Author: Roundy Cat
George Allen had promised me that we were getting married this year. Now, his face paled, and his eyes darted away from mine.

"Is that so? Marriage is a huge step, you know. You should... find someone who actually loves you. Don't just..."

George's mom, Debra Allen, gasped, cutting him off.

"Wait, what? You have a girlfriend? Since when?"

She let out an awkward laugh and glanced between us. "You two are together every single day. Remember last time when she had a fever? You even took time off work to stay home and nurse her back to health. I honestly thought you guys had feelings for each other..."

I pressed my lips together as a chill crept into my chest.

Nobody knew that I had actually been George's secret girlfriend for two years. I had wanted to go public before, but he always insisted the timing wasn't right. So, we kept it hidden until now.

George stood there, as if answering his mom's question, but also as if making sure I heard every word.

"We just started dating... about a month ago."

My mind went blank, ringing with a sharp buzz as my thoughts spun out of control.

Just a month ago, we were still tangled up in bed together. In the heat of the moment, he had even leaned in and asked if I wanted to have a baby with him.

The brutal contrast left me completely numb. My heart was pounding out of control when, suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Harlow Jackson was standing at the door, holding a gift box.

The second George opened the door, she set the box down, stood on her tiptoes, and eagerly planted a kiss on his cheek.

"George! Surprise! I missed you so much, so I just couldn't wait to see you! Come on, tell me, did you miss me?"

He chuckled and ran a hand through her hair, his eyes filled with delight. Then he took her by the hand and proudly led her inside. "Mom, this is my girlfriend I was telling you about."

Harlow looked around the room with curiosity. But when her eyes landed on me, she looked taken aback.

"Oh? Who's this?"

Before I could even open my mouth, George rushed to jump in.

"Her? Oh, that’s my... neighbor, Madison. She just dropped by for a bit."

Harlow nodded, but then her eyes locked onto my face, and she started picking apart my makeup.

"Madison, don't take this the wrong way, but your makeup looks a little off. Your eyeliner is super crooked, that foundation color really doesn't suit you, and it looks totally cakey..."

She kept going without missing a beat. "We girls really need to take care of our skin, you know? Especially at your age..."

Mid-sentence, she suddenly clapped a hand over her mouth and giggled self-consciously.

"Oh gosh, am I talking too much? I'm so sorry! I... I just get comfortable with people really fast. I didn't mean anything by it!"

My hands tightened into fists, gripping the edges of my skirt.

Just this afternoon, after finishing my makeup, I had specifically asked my best friend to check it for me.

Even she, who was notoriously hard to please, had gasped and said, "Girl, your makeup looks amazing today!"

Being put on blast like this felt awful. However, I forced myself to stand up and squeezed out a smile.

"It's fine. I actually just remembered I have something to take care of, so I should head home."

I was desperate to get out of there, but as I turned to leave, my tights caught on a sharp corner of the coffee table, tearing a long run straight up my leg.

Harlow immediately burst out laughing.

"Hahaha, what brand of tights are those? The quality is so cheap!"

She stood up and slid her phone right in front of me.

"Here, add me on Instagram. I'll send you the link to the brand I wear."

Heat flooded my cheeks as humiliation settled in.

"No thanks, I have—"

George cut me off impatiently. "Come on, what's wrong with just buying nice stuff for once? Harlow is super picky. If she says it's good, it's good!"

He pulled her close and laughed. "You have no idea, but back in high school, Madison wore this one sweater until it was all pilled and still refused to throw it away. By the end, the fabric was practically worn bare!"

I stared at him in utter disbelief.

He had forgotten that the sweater was a cherished birthday present from him? Yet here he was, taking Harlow's side without hesitation and using it as a weapon to tear me down.

My eyes stung, and tears threatened to fall.

Harlow pouted, looking thoroughly annoyed.

"Wait, how do you know what happened to her in high school? Are you two that close?"

Panic instantly flashed across his face. "Who's close with her? That's totally not true!"

On my wedding day, the venue was packed with guests.Up on stage, the host asked Ralph and me to share the story of how we fell in love. When the microphone was handed to him, Ralph spoke smoothly and confidently."I actually fell for her back when I was in ninth grade. That year, when the school held its singing competition, I happened to catch her performance on stage."The raw emotion and sincerity in her voice instantly drew me in. Before I even realized it, I had stayed for her entire set, utterly captivated and dying to meet her."On an impulse, I snapped a quick photo of her. That photo ended up being my prized possession for years."He turned his gaze toward me."Looking back, fate has been incredibly kind to me. It gave this long, quiet crush of mine a beautiful answer at last. And today, the girl from that stage is standing right beside me as my wife."…As he looked down at me with a smile, tears welled in my eyes.In that moment, the poetic words rang so true. "

From that day on, it was as if George had turned into a completely different person. He started dropping by my house constantly, finding any excuse to stay for dinner. He’d spend hours playing chess with my dad, or helping my mom out in the kitchen.A few times, he even cooked meals for me, carefully packing them into a lunchbox so I could take them to work.My mom, completely in the dark, even laughed and teased him about it."Who knew George had such a talent for cooking? His food tastes even better than mine. Honestly, if Madison didn't already have a boyfriend, I’d almost think he was trying to court her!"Frustration swelled in my chest. I picked up the lunchbox he had prepared and slammed it straight onto the floor. The lid popped off, sending cooked food and sauce splattering everywhere across the tiles.I was completely out of patience."Can you stop coming over to my house every single day? I have a boyfriend! I really don't want people to have the wrong idea about us.

George walked back home, completely dispirited.A few moments later, my phone lit up with a text from him.[If you did all this just to punish me, then congratulations. You got what you wanted.]I glanced at the message for a split second, then immediately locked my screen.I had to admit that when I first asked Ralph, part of me wanted revenge on George. But the more time I spent with Ralph, I discovered just how wonderful he truly was.He always remembered every little detail about me: that I hated cilantro and was deathly allergic to mangoes. Whenever I felt down, he would patiently listen and talk me through it.In the past, whenever I showed vulnerability around George, he only looked at me with irritation."Madison, you’re an adult. You need to learn how to control your emotions and stop treating me like your personal emotional dumpster!"So, I got good at hiding how I felt. I squeezed all my hurt deep down inside, quietly swallowing the pain all by myself. But Ralph act

I was at a loss for words. For the rest of the movie, I couldn't focus on the screen at all. My mind was totally consumed by the warmth of Ralph’s hand wrapped around mine. When the credits rolled, the crowd flooded the exits, separating Ralph and me. Out of nowhere, a hand grabbed my wrist. It was George, and he looked absolutely furious."Whose hand were you holding back there? How well do you even know him? Are you two already at the point where you just touch each other whenever you feel like it?""I don't even recognize you anymore, Madison. You followed me all the way to the movie theater, and then you turned around to hook up with some random guy? "Are you just doing this to spite me? Or do you honestly think that by degrading yourself like this, I’m going to feel sorry for you and take you back?"Anger flared in my chest, and I yanked my hand away."Whatever I do has absolutely nothing to do with you! Who are you to control me?"His face flushed red with rage. "Do your

By the time the kitten was warm and out of danger, two hours had passed.Ralph walked me down to my building, then suddenly pulled out his phone."Could I get your number? That way, I can keep you updated on how the kitten's doing."I added him, said goodbye, and turned to head upstairs, only to run right into George and Harlow.Harlow let out a smirk."Are you coming over to see George?"Well, your timing is pretty terrible. We're actually on our way out to the movies, and I don't even know if we'll be coming back tonight."I simply nodded, keeping my head down as I brushed past them into the lobby.Harlow's sweet, sickly voice echoed behind me."Oh darn, I totally forgot to ask if she wanted to come to the movies with us! Being all alone on Christmas is so lonely. She looks so pitiable, honestly. Thank goodness I have my baby with me!"She giggled, wrapping her arm tightly around George’s.…Just as I got back up to my door, my phone buzzed with a message from Ralph.I f

The kitten shivering in my arms was growing colder by the second.I swallowed hard and, putting all second thoughts aside, followed him into his place. As he opened the front door, I stepped into a spotless home. The interior was sleek and minimalist, decorated in shades of black, white, and gray. It was the classic, sharp look one would expect from a STEM guy.I slipped off my shoes at the entryway, and before I knew it, he had already run a basin of warm water in the bathroom."Bring the kitten in here," he called out.Warm steam filled the room, instantly fogging up my glasses. The moment my foot stepped into the bathroom, I tripped and lost my balance. Just as I was about to fall, a pair of warm, solid hands caught me, pulling me upright. As the steam cleared from my lenses, his handsome face came into focus right in front of mine.My heart skipped a beat.He offered a soft, reassuring smile. "Careful."I quickly straightened up, my cheeks burning. He gently took the kitt
