Alexa.

Later…

Dinner was delicious. We finally ate the lamb stew with garlic bread we found in Helia’s fridge made earlier by his cook. The bread, Helia’s signature lamb stew, and the wine; every bite, every sip, was perfect.

Now we’re in bed. Naked. Sated. Our breaths still uneven from another round of sex, glasses of red wine in hand. My body hums, but my heart still feels restless from his countenance earlier. Sadness after he mentioned his mum and brother leaving home back then. I push back the thought, just as he speaks.

“When my mum left, I missed her very much.”

His words freeze me mid sip. It isn’t just the sound of his voice, it’s the emotion in it. I turn. He’s staring into his glass, swirling the dark liquid slowly, like he’s stalling.

“I cried for days,” he continues. “My brother chose her. He didn’t choose me. Didn’t choose our bond. Everyone picked sides. But me? I chose the family. I stayed. I stayed to save us from the whores I knew my father was bringing in.”

Helia.Night.The doorbell rings and a grin breaks across my face just as I’m lifting the casserole lid from the lamb stew. Steam curls upward, fragrant and warm, while the bread still bakes in the oven. My entire house smells like food and anticipation. The bell chimes again. This time, I don’t waste a second. I dismissed the maids earlier. Tonight I want no one else here. Just me and Alexa. I called her as soon as we got back from securing Ashley in her new safehouse, and I offered to cook her dinner. Been waiting on this moment since then, restless, buzzing. She’s all I thought about. All day. All night. Always.“Hello.” I can’t help the smile as I swing open the door. There she is. Alexa. Blue tweed jacket, black slacks, black colored scarf tucked neatly at her throat. She gives me a smile that could undo me, then lifts a bottle in the air, her expression a little sheepish.“I forgot to ask what to bring, so I picked this up. Non-alcoholic wine.”I take the bottle from her, brushi

Hulio. Meanwhile… Anger bristles inside me as my driver takes me back home. My chest is a furnace, but my eyes betray me. Tears streak down my face before I can stop them. Alexa, alive. Breathing. Right in front of me and I couldn’t even hold her. Couldn’t even look at her without the past slamming into me like a hammer. Why didn’t I recognize her from the start? Damn it! The signs were there. Her eyes. Her soul. They’d been staring me in the face, screaming at me. But I’d looked past them. I’d seen only the scar carved into Prudence’s face. And beneath that scar, I should have seen something raw, something real. Alexa. The woman I had once secretly, desperately wanted to be mine. I remember the night I kissed her. I remember how young she was, how naïve, how easily she had trusted me. She had placed her heart in my hands and I had eventually crushed it when she married me as Prudence. I let her slip through my fingers because my own rage blinded me. Rage at Ashley. Rage at my

Alexa. 16th January. Friday. Two days later… Afternoon. It’s been two days since I last heard Helia’s voice. Two days since he called to cancel the dinner we planned, claiming some impromptu trip pulled him away. He promised we’d still have that dinner when he returned, but the truth is I’d been gutted. I’d been waiting for that evening, craving it, needing it. And when he pulled it away, it cut deeper than I want to admit. But I don’t have the luxury to sulk. Other matters demand my focus, the workers, the press, the investigations. Their questions still echo. ‘Ma’am, would production continue now that sections of the company are being investigated?’ One worker had asked. ‘What’s your name?’ I countered, quietly. ‘Bernard, ma’am.’ ‘Well, Bernard, rest assured, everything continues. But from now on, my approval is required before anything moves. The investigations are for you, for your safety. To ensure your work isn’t tainted by crime. Be patient. All will be well.’ He’d nod

Helia.Later…I rush into the police station with Ferdinand by my side, my pulse hammering in my ears. Dean called us here. No explanation, just urgency in his voice. My nerves are stretched thin, my senses on fire with warning. An officer escorts us down a quiet hall and into an observation room. One way mirror ahead. And when I look through it my whole body goes cold.Ashley Hills, seated on an interrogation chair, pale under the fluorescent light.Shock grips me, but I force myself into the chair opposite Dean when he gestures.“Good day, gentlemen,” he says smoothly. I barely hear him. My eyes won’t leave Ashley.“What’s the meaning of this, Dean?” My voice is hard.“As you’ve noticed, Miss Hills is here.” He leans back, almost amused. “But that’s not the only reason I called you. See, this is… a series of coincidences.”He smirks. I bristle. I'm impatient.“Tana, the maid you mentioned, Mr. Ferdinand, the one who helped Miss Hills drug her mother? She woke up yesterday.”The wor

Ashley. Alexa brings us to our late father’s office. Or what’s left of it, now that Erwin has gutted and remodeled the place to his taste. The smell, the walls, even the desk, it’s all different. But my body remembers. My skin crawls. Memories claw back of when he fucked me here, fresh from Cancun with Mum, like it was his right. “I… I know we haven’t had the best relationship in years.” I snap my gaze to her voice. It's truly her. My sister. And suddenly it hits me, why didn’t I see it before? That the voice was truly Alexa's. Maybe because I stopped paying attention to Alexa long ago. Maybe because somewhere along the line, I stopped being her sister and started being her rival. She’s standing there, words trembling out of her mouth, and I just stare. I was already halfway gone, heading back to my hotel. Just came this morning to pick up a few documents I need before I disappear. Travel. Run. I know Erwin won’t spare me after I challenged him. He’ll come. He always comes. And I
