The mattress dipped behind her.

Lucas didn’t argue. He lowered himself onto the bed, then reached over and lifted Leo with ease, moving him to the outer edge. Then he settled into the middle, right where Leo had been. Right behind her.

Victoria’s eyes flew open. She twisted around and glared at him, keeping her voice to a furious whisper.

“What if he falls?”

Lucas propped his head on one hand, his eyes dark and amused in the dim light.

“Then come to the center,” he said, and smiled.

  • Rise From Ashes   Abduction

She did not take the elevator. Elevators had cameras and waiting people, and a tight space with no way out. She took the stairs, one hand on the rail, her eyes on her phone. Floor by floor, she watched the screen. Beth was at her desk in her office. Killian was bent over a pile of documents, his pen moving. Her thumb hovered over a button. In that quiet stairwell, the only thing she could hear was her own breathing, and under it, a thought she could not push away. What if Leo is mine? What if I lost five years of him, five years of his first words, his first steps, his first birthday, and I never knew? Her hand trembled. Her eyes burned. For one second, she was not the cold woman with a hidden gang. She was just a mother afraid of the truth. She closed her eyes, breathed in, and breathed out. When she opened them again, they were clear and steady. She tapped the button. The lights went out.Shouts rose from the floor above, but she was already moving. She reached the right door and op

  • Rise From Ashes   Coincident

When the day was over, Lucas took them to a hotel restaurant for dinner. The moment they walked in, everyone turned to look. Conversations stopped, forks paused in the air, and a few guests quietly lifted their phones to take pictures. Lucas walked in front in his dark suit, Victoria beside him in a soft dress with her hair falling around her shoulders, and Leo held both their hands. They looked like a fantasy couple stepped out of a novel, with a small prince between them. They were led to a quiet table. A waitress came to take their orders, but her eyes kept drifting to Leo. She looked at him, then looked away, then looked at him again.“What is it?” Lucas asked, annoyed. The waitress jumped. “I’m so sorry, sir. It’s just that your son looks like your wife.”Lucas turned to Victoria, shocked.Victoria did not move. Slowly, she looked at Leo, and Leo was already looking back at her. For a moment, no one spoke.“That’s okay,” Lucas said at last, breaking the silence. “Take our order.”

  • Rise From Ashes   Haunting past

Cordelia stormed out and drove straight to Julian’s office, her hands tight on the wheel.Ever since Victoria had walked back into this city, Julian had never touched her. Not once. To get even a taste of him, Cordelia had to wear a special perfume: warm vanilla, dark amber, and a heavy sweetness underneath, a scent made to cloud a man’s mind and make his pulse run hot. Even then, he would close his eyes and whisper Victoria’s name like a prayer. That made her furious, again and again. She remembered her mother-in-law’s words. When will you two get married? You cannot stay engaged forever. She stopped at the office door and went in without knocking.“Babe,” she called. She could feel Julian’s bad mood in the air, thick and cold, but she did not care. All she wanted was to have her needs met.Julian looked up. For a second, his lips curled into a sneer, but he hid it so fast that she did not see it.“Mother keeps asking when we are going to get married,” Cordelia said softly. “She has

  • Rise From Ashes   Fun day

Victoria saved a seat for Lucas while Leo went to sit with the other kids. Now and then, Leo turned around to look at her and wave his small hand. The moment she saw Lucas walk into the hall, she stood up and waved. "Hey, over here!"Lucas smiled and took the seat beside her. "Wow, you look like a fairy," he whispered."Thank you," Victoria said, grinning. The hall was full of happy noise. Parents chatted, kids giggled, and phones were already raised in the air."Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your presence today," the headteacher said from the stage. "As headteacher, I welcome all of you. Now, let's see what your children have prepared for you."The parents clapped loudly. The first class sang a song, a little off-key but full of heart, and the parents cheered as if they were at a concert. Next was Leo's class, who were reciting a poem. Victoria took out her phone and started recording. Leo was so shy that he kept his eyes on the floor and drew imaginary shapes with his foot."T

  • Rise From Ashes   Parents Day

On her way, Victoria called Lucas. He was in the middle of an important meeting, and his phone lit up on the table. Roman leaned over, peeped at the screen, and smiled."Can you mind your own business?" Lucas whispered. He paused the meeting. The board members lowered their heads and waited. Lucas gave Roman a look that said continue, then stood up and walked out."Victoria?""I'm going to Leo's school," she said, out of breath. "It's parents' day, and he didn't tell us!"Lucas was already moving toward the elevator. "I'm coming."Victoria reached the school first. Parents were walking through the gates in their best clothes, and everything about them screamed wealth: designer suits, shining watches, pearl necklaces, and drivers holding umbrellas behind them. It was a school for rich kids, after all. Victoria stood there in her fairy dress, with her wings and flower crown, and nobody could stop staring. She lifted her chin and walked in like she owned the place. She finally found Leo'

  • Rise From Ashes   A warm family

Victoria woke up early to make breakfast for the two men sleeping on her bed. As she cooked, she thought about last night and smiled. Then someone hugged her from behind and kissed her neck.“Good morning, love,” Lucas whispered. His deep morning voice made her heart skip. She turned around and kissed him softly.“Breakfast is almost ready,” she said. “Go wash up. I have to get Leo ready for school.”She pushed him out of the kitchen, laughing.Victoria wondered if they were finally in a relationship, or if he was only playing around. She did not like the thought. She wanted him for herself, and for her son too.Damn, I have gone too far, she thought, biting her finger. She took out Leo’s school uniform. She had washed it yesterday because she wanted to take him to school herself today. When everything was on the table, she took a dish and put some omelette and rice into Leo’s lunch box. Then she went to the bedroom, and she stopped at the door.Lucas stood there, fresh from the showe
