Chapter 2

Author: Twilight Green
Even though I did not sleep a wink from the overwhelming sadness, I still appeared at my work desk the next morning with two dark rings under my eyes. I was just an employee, after all, and there was no excuse to be absent from work.

When I handed over my current projects to my team, my superior, Martha Waller, teased me, "Your girlfriend is so clingy and calls you several times on the phone if you're ten minutes late to go home. Now that you're leaving for Lunshire for three years, you must have spent the entire night trying to pacify her."

I lowered my head to look at my phone. Since Rose left the night before, she had not texted me even once. I smiled bitterly. "Something happened, and we're not getting married anymore."

Martha was surprised, and the smile disappeared from her face. She did not ask any further questions but patted me on the back. "It's still a good thing to find out something is wrong in a relationship before getting married."

It would have been a good thing if the man Rose cheated on me with was not my best friend, Alan, but it did not do anyone any good to explain my situation further. All I did was force an ugly smile in reply.

After I was done handing over all my work, it was almost 8:00 pm. I dragged my exhausted body home and saw Rose and Alan sitting on the couch the moment I opened the door. They were holding hands and sitting shoulder to shoulder against each other.

The sight enraged me, and I got dizzy from the anger. I had to lean against the doorframe to steady myself. When I calmed down sufficiently, I turned to leave. I had finally finished work for the day, and did not want to spend the remaining hours of the day being mad about them.

"Walden!" Alan ran up to me and grabbed me by the sleeve. "I made your favorite ribs and stew. Come on. Stay and have dinner."

Before I could reply, Rose came over as well. She held onto Alan gently and frowned. "Alan spent the entire night in the hospital and only managed a few hours' sleep earlier today, but he insisted on coming back here to make you dinner.

"Don't waste his effort, Walden, and let's have dinner together."

I looked at their faces. One of them was hesitant, while the other was insistent. This meal was not an apology to me. They had something to say.

"Fine." I pushed Alan's hand away from me and walked to the dining table.

When the three of us used to have a meal together, I would always sit next to Rose, while Alan would sit opposite us. Tonight, Rose took her seat next to Alan instead, and I sat alone opposite them.

The dishes were quickly served, but I did not touch anything and went straight to the point. "Just say whatever it is you want to say."

Alan forced a smile. "It's really nothing, Walden…"

Before he could finish, Rose grabbed his hand to stop him from continuing. After that, she looked up at me. "Alan and I will be having a civil wedding tomorrow. After we get our marriage license, I plan to let Alan and the baby move into this house so that it would be more convenient for me to take care of them."

I was so stunned that I dropped my fork onto the table.

Rose and I had been fixing up the house for two years to make it a place for both of us after we got married. We made all the renovation and decoration decisions together, and when we moved in, she even joked about Alan and me.

"I know you and Alan are so close that you probably are practically inseparable, but this house belongs to both of us, and you're not allowed to make him a permanent tenant in this house."

That was why, when Alan suddenly had the baby and could not cope on his own, I decided to spend more time traveling between two locations rather than inviting him to stay at our house. However, the person who was inviting him now turned out to be Rose.

I clenched my teeth to stop myself from yelling at them. "Fine. He can move in. I'll be moving out."

Rose did not agree. "Do you really need to make things difficult for me, Walden?"

I almost laughed in anger at her words. She was the one who slept with another man and had his baby, and now she wanted them in our house. Was I really the one who was making things difficult?

"It isn't safe or convenient for Alan to take care of the baby on his own out here. He's a new father, and he might miss out on something if he did this alone." Rose frowned and continued indignantly, "He's your best friend. Can you bear to let him be?"

I looked up at Alan. He still looked pretty good despite spending a night by the baby's side. In fact, he looked even sturdier than a month ago. It was proof that I had taken very good care of him and the baby in the past 100 days.

As for me, I lost over twenty pounds in just three months because I had to work during the day and help him take care of the baby at night.

I laughed sarcastically. "You gave him the baby, not me. If you're so worried about him, shouldn't you return the money I paid for his hospital bills and the nanny?"

Three days later, Alan and Rose returned home together and got a divorce. Alan had custody of Jay while Rose paid them child support. He also left Rose's company and joined a startup. With Alan's work capabilities, he probably would have a hard time at work, but I did not bother to find out more about his situation because I was too busy.My new project at work had just started, and the headquarters had included the west district deputy director on the list of promotions. My life consisted of meetings or traveling to client offices for discussions. Two weeks later, the front desk suddenly called me on the office phone. "Mr. Scott, Ms. Sinclair is here again.""Handle this according to our blacklist."Rose had tried to stop me numerous times at the door, and the company ended up blacklisting her due to the harassment. Not long after, I saw the security guards escort her out of the building through the window. She struggled to be released from their grips and waved her hands about

In the second week after the contract was terminated, I received news from my colleagues back home. They told me that Alan had been suspended. The projects he was in charge of kept having problems, and the company initiated an internal investigation into them. As Rose was not in the country, no one was around to cover for him anymore. The finance department requested that he explain the incorrect quotations, while the legal department investigated the issue with the different contract versions in his hands. The project team placed every record of the project delay in front of him.Alan called Rose every day, but she would only pick up one out of ten calls. "Rose, the company wants to suspend me.""I know.""When are you coming back?"Rose was silent for a while before replying, "I still have work over here."Alan choked back a sob. "Are you there because of Walden?"Rose did not answer, but hung up quietly. After that, Alan only received a few texts from Rose.[Cooperate with

Rose did not return home. The next day, Charlie helped her rent an apartment near my company for three months. It was as if she never planned to return alone from the very start. Next, our company was informed that Alan had been removed as the team lead for the project we were working on. Rose took over the project and requested that I be the one to follow up on the project with her company. At the end of her email, she even added: [As this involves core information, I would like to only communicate with Mr. Scott about this project.]I knew what she was planning, but I could not reject any work based on personal issues. The first time we met up to discuss the project, she invited me to a restaurant we visited the first time we traveled to Lunshire. She was wearing the dress from our first date six years ago, and even the bracelet on her wrist was a present I bought for her with the first bonus I earned when I just started working. It was not particularly valuable, and it proba

Rose froze as she stared at the scars on my arm, unable to believe her eyes. "Was this caused by the fire that day?"I pulled down my sleeve. "Yes.""Why didn't you do a skin graft? Why didn't you tell me that you were injured?" Her voice was trembling, and her breathing became erratic. I looked up at her. "What would've happened if I did tell you? Would you have spared a moment to come see me after leaving Alan's side? Or would you have waited until he was done crying before you remembered that I had been admitted into the hospital too?"Rose turned pale. "I had no idea your wound was so serious. I… I thought it was just a minor injury that you could handle by yourself."This again. It was because I could handle it myself that I should admit myself to the hospital, and she could walk past me without hesitation during the fire.Raindrops fell from the umbrella as I looked at her, and I suddenly decided there was no point in hiding certain truths. "I know you aborted our baby, Ro

It was drizzling in Lunshire when I was going home from work.Becca and I were the last group to leave the office. She swung her car keys in her hand and said, "Now that we've saved this project, would you like to have a celebration meal with me?""Doesn't the late-night snack we had yesterday count as a celebration meal?""That was to reward everyone for working overtime."Becca opened the car door for me and said in a businesslike tone, "Today is the real celebration."I was about to get into the car when I heard a hoarse voice calling out behind me, "Walden."It made me stop in my tracks. Even though it had been a month, and I was in another country, I could still recognize Rose's voice. When I turned back to look, she was standing under a street light in front of my office building.Rose must have waited for me a long time because her black coat was wet from the rain, and there were dark rings under her eyes. When she saw me, her eyes lit up, but she was taken aback when she

When I got to work the next day, Becca placed an urgent risk alert on my desk. "A project back home has come up with some issues. The client is demanding that the Lunshire team complete the overseas implementation plan within three days, or they will terminate the contract."I flipped through the document, and my fingers quivered slightly when I saw the client's team lead. It was Alan. This was the project Rose had handed over to him and forcefully had me replaced a month ago.Now that the project had progressed to its overseas implementation, it was a shock to see that the submitted documents were a mess. Ten minutes later, everyone gathered in the meeting room. The project manager projected several emails on the big screen."The client confirmed version A, but three days later, claimed that it was never agreed on. After that, the budget was exceeded by ten times the original amount, and we were given three different deadlines. Three days ago, the client requested that we impleme
