Chapter 3

Author: Twilight Green
Rose did not expect me to ask for money, and her face fell.

Alan's eyes began to brim with tears, and he quickly grabbed a pen and some paper. "Don't be mad, Walden. I'll write you an IOU. I'll get a job when the baby is older, and I'll return you the money with interest."

Alan had barely started writing the IOU when Rose grabbed the paper and tore it in two. "You don't need to do this."

She turned to look at me coldly. "Tell me how much you spent on Alan all these years, and I'll return the full amount to you."

She held Alan's hand. "You don't need to write him an IOU. With me around, we don't need to owe him anything."

I used to think that they were the most important people to me, but they were now standing against me together as my enemies.

My tears were about to burst, but I bit down hard on the tip of my tongue and forced back my tears. "Fine. Let's go through every item."

I started searching through all the receipts for milk powder, diapers, baby items, the nanny, and even hotel rooms. I backtracked through all the payments I made for Alan until I came to the last item, which was also the first money transaction between Alan and me.

When I was 18, my parents refused to let me continue my studies at university. They wanted me to stop schooling and start working right away to contribute my earnings to my older brother's wedding.

They locked me up in the room, and it was Alan who broke the window and saved me. He gave me all the money he had saved and earned from working part-time jobs during school breaks, which came to a total of 1,000 dollars, but I refused it.

Alan smiled then and said, "You're a smart guy, Walden. You'll make something of yourself in the future. I'm not loaning you the money. I'm investing in you. I trust what I see, and I see that you have great potential."

A tear splashed on my phone screen. I quickly wiped it off and deducted that money from the total I paid for him. My phone soon buzzed with a notification from the bank, informing me that Rose had transferred 64,000 dollars to me.

The very first amount was everything Alan had, and it helped save me from falling into an abyss. The last amount, however, was used to buy out a decade's worth of friendship between us.

Once all was said and done, I was so exhausted I could not think straight. I took a shower in a daze, and fell asleep the moment I hit the bed. As I did not have to work the next day, I slept until noon, and by then, there was no one in the house.

A Post-it note was left on the fridge with Alan's handwriting on it. [There's stew in the pot, Walden. Have it while it's hot.]

When I opened the pot, a wonderful fragrance wafted from it. It was my favorite seafood stew. Alan had a shellfish allergy, and his skin would turn red at a touch from it, but I enjoyed this dish, and he had been happily making it for me for years.

I stood silently in front of the pot for a long time before throwing the entire pot of stew away. It was just seafood stew. I could buy it anytime I wanted, and it didn't need to be cooked by someone in particular for it to taste good. I grabbed some bread and bit into it robotically instead.

A notification popped up on my phone right then. It was a social media post from Rose, who shared a picture of their marriage license and the baby's birth certificate with the caption: [Welcome home, Jay Sinclair.]

My hands started trembling when I saw the name.

There was a period of time when Rose suffered from insomnia, and she would wake me up in the middle of the night to chat when she could not sleep. We talked about our future children, and I became wide awake as I imagined our future.

"If we get a girl, let's call her Serene Sinclair because I want her to live her life with serenity, and if it's a boy, let's call him Jay Sinclair, because it means victory."

Rose hugged me and kissed me on the forehead. "Anything their father wants."

However, she used the name for my future children and gave it to Alan's son. I clicked into the comments section and typed with trembling hands. [How could you give him that name, Rose?!]

Before I could post the comment, the page refreshed, and the post was deleted.

I was filled with rage with nowhere to vent, and I started feeling nauseous. I ran into the bathroom and crouched next to the toilet bowl, throwing up for a long time.

All I threw up was water and stomach acid. Just as I was about to stand up, I noticed a white pregnancy test sticking out of the bin. I picked it up and saw that it had two red lines on it.

Three days later, Alan and Rose returned home together and got a divorce. Alan had custody of Jay while Rose paid them child support. He also left Rose's company and joined a startup. With Alan's work capabilities, he probably would have a hard time at work, but I did not bother to find out more about his situation because I was too busy.My new project at work had just started, and the headquarters had included the west district deputy director on the list of promotions. My life consisted of meetings or traveling to client offices for discussions. Two weeks later, the front desk suddenly called me on the office phone. "Mr. Scott, Ms. Sinclair is here again.""Handle this according to our blacklist."Rose had tried to stop me numerous times at the door, and the company ended up blacklisting her due to the harassment. Not long after, I saw the security guards escort her out of the building through the window. She struggled to be released from their grips and waved her hands about

In the second week after the contract was terminated, I received news from my colleagues back home. They told me that Alan had been suspended. The projects he was in charge of kept having problems, and the company initiated an internal investigation into them. As Rose was not in the country, no one was around to cover for him anymore. The finance department requested that he explain the incorrect quotations, while the legal department investigated the issue with the different contract versions in his hands. The project team placed every record of the project delay in front of him.Alan called Rose every day, but she would only pick up one out of ten calls. "Rose, the company wants to suspend me.""I know.""When are you coming back?"Rose was silent for a while before replying, "I still have work over here."Alan choked back a sob. "Are you there because of Walden?"Rose did not answer, but hung up quietly. After that, Alan only received a few texts from Rose.[Cooperate with

Rose did not return home. The next day, Charlie helped her rent an apartment near my company for three months. It was as if she never planned to return alone from the very start. Next, our company was informed that Alan had been removed as the team lead for the project we were working on. Rose took over the project and requested that I be the one to follow up on the project with her company. At the end of her email, she even added: [As this involves core information, I would like to only communicate with Mr. Scott about this project.]I knew what she was planning, but I could not reject any work based on personal issues. The first time we met up to discuss the project, she invited me to a restaurant we visited the first time we traveled to Lunshire. She was wearing the dress from our first date six years ago, and even the bracelet on her wrist was a present I bought for her with the first bonus I earned when I just started working. It was not particularly valuable, and it proba

Rose froze as she stared at the scars on my arm, unable to believe her eyes. "Was this caused by the fire that day?"I pulled down my sleeve. "Yes.""Why didn't you do a skin graft? Why didn't you tell me that you were injured?" Her voice was trembling, and her breathing became erratic. I looked up at her. "What would've happened if I did tell you? Would you have spared a moment to come see me after leaving Alan's side? Or would you have waited until he was done crying before you remembered that I had been admitted into the hospital too?"Rose turned pale. "I had no idea your wound was so serious. I… I thought it was just a minor injury that you could handle by yourself."This again. It was because I could handle it myself that I should admit myself to the hospital, and she could walk past me without hesitation during the fire.Raindrops fell from the umbrella as I looked at her, and I suddenly decided there was no point in hiding certain truths. "I know you aborted our baby, Ro

It was drizzling in Lunshire when I was going home from work.Becca and I were the last group to leave the office. She swung her car keys in her hand and said, "Now that we've saved this project, would you like to have a celebration meal with me?""Doesn't the late-night snack we had yesterday count as a celebration meal?""That was to reward everyone for working overtime."Becca opened the car door for me and said in a businesslike tone, "Today is the real celebration."I was about to get into the car when I heard a hoarse voice calling out behind me, "Walden."It made me stop in my tracks. Even though it had been a month, and I was in another country, I could still recognize Rose's voice. When I turned back to look, she was standing under a street light in front of my office building.Rose must have waited for me a long time because her black coat was wet from the rain, and there were dark rings under her eyes. When she saw me, her eyes lit up, but she was taken aback when she

When I got to work the next day, Becca placed an urgent risk alert on my desk. "A project back home has come up with some issues. The client is demanding that the Lunshire team complete the overseas implementation plan within three days, or they will terminate the contract."I flipped through the document, and my fingers quivered slightly when I saw the client's team lead. It was Alan. This was the project Rose had handed over to him and forcefully had me replaced a month ago.Now that the project had progressed to its overseas implementation, it was a shock to see that the submitted documents were a mess. Ten minutes later, everyone gathered in the meeting room. The project manager projected several emails on the big screen."The client confirmed version A, but three days later, claimed that it was never agreed on. After that, the budget was exceeded by ten times the original amount, and we were given three different deadlines. Three days ago, the client requested that we impleme
