Chapter 7

Author: Twilight Green
After checking out of the hotel, I returned home to pack my luggage.

When I pushed open the door, I saw a pair of shoes that belonged to Alan placed nicely behind the door. My shoes were pushed to the extreme corner and looked like they had been stepped on. The picture of Rose and me had disappeared from the living room and was replaced with a family picture of Rose and Alan hugging Jay.

I laughed self-deprecatingly as I was reminded of a question I used to ask Rose. "How long would it take for you to forget me if I ever left you?"

Rose laughed and hugged me, promising that she would never forget me, but her actions today gave me a new answer to the question. The change took only two short days.

When I was about to enter the bedroom, I heard the door being opened. Rose and Alan entered side-by-side, and Alan's eyes lit up when he saw me. He approached me cautiously and said, "You're back, Walden. Have you… Have you forgiven me?"

I looked at him coldly and did not answer.

However, Alan took my silence as an affirmative, and he started tearing up. "Rose told me everything. Thank you for giving us a month. Don't worry. I promise I'll leave after a month. I'll make sure I won't leave any trace of my existence, and I'll never bother you again."

I looked at Rose. She was standing nearby with a look of conviction, agreeing with everything Alan said. I could not believe my silence was translated as consent in her eyes. Where did she get the confidence from? Did she really think that she was some sort of rare treasure?

Was a woman who cheated on me, divorced, and had a baby with someone else worth me accepting all her terms without question? I was not bothered to explain myself and went straight into the room to continue packing.

Alan continued trying to pacify me as he spoke to me through the door. "You haven't had dinner yet, have you, Walden? How about if I made you your favorite ribs?"

Not long after, I could hear pots and pans clanging in the kitchen.

I had just zipped up my luggage when I heard the fire alarm go off shrilly. This was followed by Alan's panicked shouting, "Fire!"

Thick smoke was coming out of the kitchen when I ran out of the bedroom. Alan had accidentally caused the fire while cooking because he was distracted. He knocked over a spice rack in panic, causing the flame to hit the wall, and it started burning the range hood and ceiling.

Sparks of flame kept falling to the ground. The smoke was so thick that Alan and I could not stop coughing violently. Soon, a board put up as a house decoration fell from the flames and separated Alan and me.

"Rose!"

Alan looked pale as he waved her over with reddened eyes. I was closer to Rose, but she ran past me without hesitation to grab Alan's wrist. "Don't worry. We'll get out of here together."

With that, they leaned against each other to dash out the door without giving me a glance. When the anti-theft door closed in front of me, I snapped out of the shock and stumbled into the bathroom to grab a wet towel and put it over my mouth and nose.

A loud crash came from above me when I ran into the living room, and the burning cabinet door fell hard on my arm. I fell to the ground, and I tried my best to put out the fire with the wet towel. I crawled to the door on all fours, but I could no longer hold on and passed out.

…

When I opened my eyes, I was in the hospital bed. The nurse was changing my bandage with a frown. "That burn on your arm is serious. Your wound might not completely heal. Once your situation has stabilized, you might want to consider skin grafting."

I looked down at my arm, covered in bandages, and shook my head. "It's fine."

The nurse did not understand it. "You're still young. Leaving such a huge scar on your arm is pretty horrible."

I stared at the ceiling with a glaze over my eyes. "It's fine to have a scar. I need something to remind me of the lesson I learned today."

It was a reminder to never bank all my happiness on one person, regardless of love or friendship.

That was when I received a text from Rose: [How are you doing? Alan suffered a fright too, and I can't leave because I need to accompany him and Jay. Text me once you've been treated.]

I did not want to reply and was about to turn off my phone when the property management office called me. "Mr. Scott, the house has been burned pretty badly, and you probably need to renovate it. All of the furniture and your personal items are mostly burned."

I had put so much effort into designing the house, but the news of it being burned to a crisp did not upset me much at all. It was just as well. Everything in the past had been burned to the ground and given me a clean slate.

Fortunately, my passport, identification card, and credit cards had been packed earlier. Nothing could stop me from leaving now. I stayed another night in the hospital before taking a taxi to the airport by myself the next morning.

The earliest flight to Lunshire that morning would take me away from this city filled with hate and love.

Outside the taxi, I could see the sun slowly rise, and the mist gradually dissipate. However, it was not just the mist that vanished completely under the morning sun, but also the six years I had with Rose and the ten years of friendship I had with Alan. There was no turning back.

Three days later, Alan and Rose returned home together and got a divorce. Alan had custody of Jay while Rose paid them child support. He also left Rose's company and joined a startup. With Alan's work capabilities, he probably would have a hard time at work, but I did not bother to find out more about his situation because I was too busy.My new project at work had just started, and the headquarters had included the west district deputy director on the list of promotions. My life consisted of meetings or traveling to client offices for discussions. Two weeks later, the front desk suddenly called me on the office phone. "Mr. Scott, Ms. Sinclair is here again.""Handle this according to our blacklist."Rose had tried to stop me numerous times at the door, and the company ended up blacklisting her due to the harassment. Not long after, I saw the security guards escort her out of the building through the window. She struggled to be released from their grips and waved her hands about

In the second week after the contract was terminated, I received news from my colleagues back home. They told me that Alan had been suspended. The projects he was in charge of kept having problems, and the company initiated an internal investigation into them. As Rose was not in the country, no one was around to cover for him anymore. The finance department requested that he explain the incorrect quotations, while the legal department investigated the issue with the different contract versions in his hands. The project team placed every record of the project delay in front of him.Alan called Rose every day, but she would only pick up one out of ten calls. "Rose, the company wants to suspend me.""I know.""When are you coming back?"Rose was silent for a while before replying, "I still have work over here."Alan choked back a sob. "Are you there because of Walden?"Rose did not answer, but hung up quietly. After that, Alan only received a few texts from Rose.[Cooperate with

Rose did not return home. The next day, Charlie helped her rent an apartment near my company for three months. It was as if she never planned to return alone from the very start. Next, our company was informed that Alan had been removed as the team lead for the project we were working on. Rose took over the project and requested that I be the one to follow up on the project with her company. At the end of her email, she even added: [As this involves core information, I would like to only communicate with Mr. Scott about this project.]I knew what she was planning, but I could not reject any work based on personal issues. The first time we met up to discuss the project, she invited me to a restaurant we visited the first time we traveled to Lunshire. She was wearing the dress from our first date six years ago, and even the bracelet on her wrist was a present I bought for her with the first bonus I earned when I just started working. It was not particularly valuable, and it proba

Rose froze as she stared at the scars on my arm, unable to believe her eyes. "Was this caused by the fire that day?"I pulled down my sleeve. "Yes.""Why didn't you do a skin graft? Why didn't you tell me that you were injured?" Her voice was trembling, and her breathing became erratic. I looked up at her. "What would've happened if I did tell you? Would you have spared a moment to come see me after leaving Alan's side? Or would you have waited until he was done crying before you remembered that I had been admitted into the hospital too?"Rose turned pale. "I had no idea your wound was so serious. I… I thought it was just a minor injury that you could handle by yourself."This again. It was because I could handle it myself that I should admit myself to the hospital, and she could walk past me without hesitation during the fire.Raindrops fell from the umbrella as I looked at her, and I suddenly decided there was no point in hiding certain truths. "I know you aborted our baby, Ro

It was drizzling in Lunshire when I was going home from work.Becca and I were the last group to leave the office. She swung her car keys in her hand and said, "Now that we've saved this project, would you like to have a celebration meal with me?""Doesn't the late-night snack we had yesterday count as a celebration meal?""That was to reward everyone for working overtime."Becca opened the car door for me and said in a businesslike tone, "Today is the real celebration."I was about to get into the car when I heard a hoarse voice calling out behind me, "Walden."It made me stop in my tracks. Even though it had been a month, and I was in another country, I could still recognize Rose's voice. When I turned back to look, she was standing under a street light in front of my office building.Rose must have waited for me a long time because her black coat was wet from the rain, and there were dark rings under her eyes. When she saw me, her eyes lit up, but she was taken aback when she

When I got to work the next day, Becca placed an urgent risk alert on my desk. "A project back home has come up with some issues. The client is demanding that the Lunshire team complete the overseas implementation plan within three days, or they will terminate the contract."I flipped through the document, and my fingers quivered slightly when I saw the client's team lead. It was Alan. This was the project Rose had handed over to him and forcefully had me replaced a month ago.Now that the project had progressed to its overseas implementation, it was a shock to see that the submitted documents were a mess. Ten minutes later, everyone gathered in the meeting room. The project manager projected several emails on the big screen."The client confirmed version A, but three days later, claimed that it was never agreed on. After that, the budget was exceeded by ten times the original amount, and we were given three different deadlines. Three days ago, the client requested that we impleme
