Chapter 6

Author: Twilight Green
I sat in the cafe until it closed. I did not want to go home, but I had nowhere else to go. In the end, I checked into a hotel near my company and prepared to hand over the last of my work the next day.

When I arrived at the office, Martha called me to her office. She frowned while pushing some documents in my direction.

"What's going on? The clients have specifically requested different project leads for these projects. You're about to transfer to our overseas branch, and we were supposed to replace you anyway, but this request might make the headquarters doubt your work capability."

I glanced at the documents and saw that two of them were Rose's companies. The rest were business partners close to her. How could I not understand?

"I'll handle this, Martha."

When I left the office, I called Rose right away, but she did not pick up the first seven times. When I called her the eighth time, the call was finally picked up, but it was Alan who spoke to me. "Rose is still asleep, Walden. I picked it up because I was worried this could be an emergency."

I tried to suppress my anger. "Get her to the phone."

"But she barely slept last night because she was taking care of Jay…"

My patience ran out, and I hung up to take a taxi to the hospital. When I arrived, Rose was sleeping in a caretaker's bed next to Jay. Her shirt was slightly open at the collar, revealing fresh hickeys. It took one glance to know what had happened.

I tried to hold in the nausea from the disgust of it all and shook her awake. "Why did you want me replaced, Rose?"

Rose woke up groggily and grabbed my hand. "Alan, is Jay…" When she saw my face, her tender expression vanished. "What are you doing here?"

"You took things personally at work and requested to replace the team lead in charge of your company's projects, and you're asking me what I'm doing here?"

That was when Alan entered the room with a kettle. When he noticed the tension between us, he came over quickly to shield me behind him. "You shouldn't bully Walden, Rose."

The coldness in Rose's eyes vanished. "Can't you understand what I'm trying to do, Alan? I've already given you the projects at work. That way, you'll still be able to lead a comfortable life with all the money you make after you leave me.

"But if Walden was the person in charge of those projects, how are you supposed to work together to push things forward?"

Rose looked at me and said indignantly, "What's wrong with me wanting to give my husband a career boost? Besides, I'm the client. I have the right to request that someone else work with my company on this project."

I stared at her with reddened eyes. I had loved this woman for six years, but she was now like a total stranger to me. In fact, she looked hateful to me.

It took a long time before I suddenly laughed. "No problem. You're the client. You can pick whoever you want to work on your projects. I have no objections."

With that, I turned to leave. I could hear the chair screeching behind me as Rose wanted to come after me, but Jay started bawling suddenly, and it stopped her in her tracks.

When I returned to the office, Martha walked me to the elevator and kept reminding me, "Remember to explain the situation clearly when you get to the headquarters. I know how long you've worked on those projects and how many sleepless nights you've spent on them. You can't let one word from someone destroy all your hard work."

I nodded, trying my best not to cry.

Even Martha knew how hard I worked, and it was impossible that Rose would not know about it. However, just for Alan, Rose had chosen to ruin years of my hard work without blinking twice. They had destroyed my love and friendship, but I refused to allow them to destroy my career.

Rose had made a last-minute request to replace me as the person-in-charge, which meant that I was not required for further handover at work. So, I clicked on the flight app to modify my ticket to the day after tomorrow.

Three days later, Alan and Rose returned home together and got a divorce. Alan had custody of Jay while Rose paid them child support. He also left Rose's company and joined a startup. With Alan's work capabilities, he probably would have a hard time at work, but I did not bother to find out more about his situation because I was too busy.My new project at work had just started, and the headquarters had included the west district deputy director on the list of promotions. My life consisted of meetings or traveling to client offices for discussions. Two weeks later, the front desk suddenly called me on the office phone. "Mr. Scott, Ms. Sinclair is here again.""Handle this according to our blacklist."Rose had tried to stop me numerous times at the door, and the company ended up blacklisting her due to the harassment. Not long after, I saw the security guards escort her out of the building through the window. She struggled to be released from their grips and waved her hands about

In the second week after the contract was terminated, I received news from my colleagues back home. They told me that Alan had been suspended. The projects he was in charge of kept having problems, and the company initiated an internal investigation into them. As Rose was not in the country, no one was around to cover for him anymore. The finance department requested that he explain the incorrect quotations, while the legal department investigated the issue with the different contract versions in his hands. The project team placed every record of the project delay in front of him.Alan called Rose every day, but she would only pick up one out of ten calls. "Rose, the company wants to suspend me.""I know.""When are you coming back?"Rose was silent for a while before replying, "I still have work over here."Alan choked back a sob. "Are you there because of Walden?"Rose did not answer, but hung up quietly. After that, Alan only received a few texts from Rose.[Cooperate with

Rose did not return home. The next day, Charlie helped her rent an apartment near my company for three months. It was as if she never planned to return alone from the very start. Next, our company was informed that Alan had been removed as the team lead for the project we were working on. Rose took over the project and requested that I be the one to follow up on the project with her company. At the end of her email, she even added: [As this involves core information, I would like to only communicate with Mr. Scott about this project.]I knew what she was planning, but I could not reject any work based on personal issues. The first time we met up to discuss the project, she invited me to a restaurant we visited the first time we traveled to Lunshire. She was wearing the dress from our first date six years ago, and even the bracelet on her wrist was a present I bought for her with the first bonus I earned when I just started working. It was not particularly valuable, and it proba

Rose froze as she stared at the scars on my arm, unable to believe her eyes. "Was this caused by the fire that day?"I pulled down my sleeve. "Yes.""Why didn't you do a skin graft? Why didn't you tell me that you were injured?" Her voice was trembling, and her breathing became erratic. I looked up at her. "What would've happened if I did tell you? Would you have spared a moment to come see me after leaving Alan's side? Or would you have waited until he was done crying before you remembered that I had been admitted into the hospital too?"Rose turned pale. "I had no idea your wound was so serious. I… I thought it was just a minor injury that you could handle by yourself."This again. It was because I could handle it myself that I should admit myself to the hospital, and she could walk past me without hesitation during the fire.Raindrops fell from the umbrella as I looked at her, and I suddenly decided there was no point in hiding certain truths. "I know you aborted our baby, Ro

It was drizzling in Lunshire when I was going home from work.Becca and I were the last group to leave the office. She swung her car keys in her hand and said, "Now that we've saved this project, would you like to have a celebration meal with me?""Doesn't the late-night snack we had yesterday count as a celebration meal?""That was to reward everyone for working overtime."Becca opened the car door for me and said in a businesslike tone, "Today is the real celebration."I was about to get into the car when I heard a hoarse voice calling out behind me, "Walden."It made me stop in my tracks. Even though it had been a month, and I was in another country, I could still recognize Rose's voice. When I turned back to look, she was standing under a street light in front of my office building.Rose must have waited for me a long time because her black coat was wet from the rain, and there were dark rings under her eyes. When she saw me, her eyes lit up, but she was taken aback when she

When I got to work the next day, Becca placed an urgent risk alert on my desk. "A project back home has come up with some issues. The client is demanding that the Lunshire team complete the overseas implementation plan within three days, or they will terminate the contract."I flipped through the document, and my fingers quivered slightly when I saw the client's team lead. It was Alan. This was the project Rose had handed over to him and forcefully had me replaced a month ago.Now that the project had progressed to its overseas implementation, it was a shock to see that the submitted documents were a mess. Ten minutes later, everyone gathered in the meeting room. The project manager projected several emails on the big screen."The client confirmed version A, but three days later, claimed that it was never agreed on. After that, the budget was exceeded by ten times the original amount, and we were given three different deadlines. Three days ago, the client requested that we impleme
