Chapter 18

~ Mirabella ~

The courthouse smelled like cold metal and floor polish. I sat on the hard bench, knees pressed together, hands twisted in my lap like they might unravel if I let go. The room was too quiet—an anxious kind of quiet that pressed against my ears and made my pulse pound louder than it should have.

My eyes kept flicking toward the double doors.

Any moment now.

Cole would walk in.

He had to.

I’d left him five voicemails. I told him everything. Well, almost everything. I poured my pride into a blender and served him whatever was left of me, desperate and raw and choking on my own confessions. He had to come. He said he would come.

Right?

The clock on the wall ticked louder than it needed to. Every passing second jabbed needles into my skin.

Rows of people filed into the courtroom. Ethan entered first, dressed in a sharp navy suit, the picture of a respectable father. Sienna followed closely, her red lips curled into something almost pleasant, if I

  • Rising From Betrayal    Chapter 19

Chapter 19~ Mirabella ~The hospital’s sterile air pressed against my skin like a second layer of ice. I didn’t know what I was hoping for when I came here, but each footstep felt heavier than the last. My phone was clenched tight in my hand, the text from the unknown number still glowing on the screen, its words burning into my thoughts:He never stood you up. Check the hospital. So I ran to the one hospital Cole and I were accustomed to.I couldn’t breathe—not from fear, not from panic, but from the sheer weight of something I couldn't place. Maybe everything. The receptionist gave me a strange look as I approached the desk, her eyes flicking down to my unsteady hands and then back up to my face. I must’ve looked a mess—my hair tangled and unkempt, my eyes bloodshot from crying, from trying to be strong for a fight I’d already lost.“I need to see Cole Carter,” I said, my voice hoarse from the desperate calls I’d made to his phone this morning. She blinked at me, an uncomfortable p

  • Rising From Betrayal    Chapter 17

Chapter 17~ Mirabella ~My sweet, innocent Theo. The room spun, and I clutched the edge of the table to steady myself.I snatched the phone from the floor, my fingers fumbling as I dialed Ethan's number. It rang once before going straight to voicemail. I tried again. And again. Each time, the same result. Panic clawed at my chest."Pick up, damn it!" I screamed into the void, my voice cracking. "You can't do this!"I paced the room, the walls closing in. I needed help. I needed someone who could make sense of this legal nightmare. I scrolled through my contacts and tapped on my lawyer's number. The line connected after a few rings."Ms. Carter," came the calm voice of Ms. Thompson. "I was just about to call you.""Did you see the papers?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper."Yes," she replied, her tone grave. "Ethan's team filed the petition this morning. They're claiming you're unfit due to recent personal and legal issues.""This is absurd!" I exclaimed. "He's the one who's u

Chapter 16~ Mirabella ~“That’s fake,” I cried. “It’s edited, it’s—he’s trying to destroy us, Cole, don’t you see it?! Ethan’s been obsessed with ruining me ever since the mar—everything.” I cut that part before I could do more damage.“He's capable of anything. He could have—he probably recorded old—someone else's audios or stitched things together. Please, baby, you have to believe me—”“Stop.” His voice was hoarse, lifeless.“No, no, listen to me—Cole, please!” I sobbed. “He manipulated me—he caught me at my lowest. I was drunk. I—I didn’t mean for anything to happen. I didn’t even know where I was at first—”“But it happened.”My throat closed.“You could’ve said no,” Cole whispered, and now his voice was like ash. “You always said no before. Even when I begged, even when we were fighting. You never let it go too far. Why now?”“Because I was broken!” I screamed. “You shut me out, Cole! You told me I was suffocating you—you made me feel like I wasn’t enough anymore. You left me d

  • Rising From Betrayal    Chapter 15

Chapter 15~ Mirabella ~The morning light filtered through the blinds, casting soft patterns on the bedroom walls. I reached out instinctively, my hand searching for Cole's familiar warmth beside me. The sheets were cold, untouched. Then it hit me—he hadn't come home last night. He wasn't coming anytime soon.I need space, Lena. Those were his own words. So harsh and raw, like I was suffocating him, whereas all I wanted was him all over me like before.A sharp throb pulsed behind my eyes, remnants of a restless night. I sat up slowly, the weight of guilt pressing down on my chest. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, its screen lighting up with notifications.Fifteen missed calls, when I looked. Multiple messages, and the majority were from the name Cole.My heart pounded as I unlocked the phone, scrolling through the barrage of texts.Cole: > What the hell is wrong with you? I’ve been calling all night. Where are you? Please, Lena. Talk to me.

  • Rising From Betrayal    Chapter 14

Chapter 14~ Mirabella ~Silence blanketed the room like a storm just waiting to break. I stared at him, blinking as if that might somehow erase what I’d just heard, lips parted, heart thundering like it wanted out of my chest. If you won’t remarry me... then sleep with me. He said it so simply, yet it lodged deep in my chest like a poisoned dagger: Sleep with me.Like it was nothing. Like it wasn’t the vilest thing he could’ve said to me in this moment.A bitter laugh clawed its way up my throat. “You’re unbelievable.”Ethan didn’t flinch. He just stood there—arms loose at his sides, gaze unblinking—as if he was waiting for me to calm down, to see things his way, to drop to my knees in gratitude for his kindness. God, I could barely recognize the man in front of me anymore.“You really think I’d trade my body for my son’s life?” I hissed, voice trembling with rage.“No. I think you already know what I’m offering, Lena,” he said, low. “I want you. Just once. And I’ll never ask again.”
