TWO YEARS LATER-
"ARINA, YOU WORTHLESS STUPID GIRL!"
my mother yelled at me from the top of the staircase."Who told you that you could sleep? Look at the place; the kitchen is dirty, the laundry isn't folded or put away, and you still haven't made breakfast"! She yelled.
"I'm sorry, Luna. I'll be there immediately." I replied timidly, wiping sleep from my eyes. I grabbed whatever clothes I could find: an oversized black shirt and ripped light blue jeans two sizes too big. I didn't have much to choose from these days.
I only had leftovers from everyone's donations to local charities. Mother gave me whatever she thought was too big, ripped, or stained. Anything considered trash.
My black waist-length hair was once full of life and shine, but now it was dull and lifeless. As a result of all the chemicals I used to clean the house, my once smooth, cream-colored skin itched constantly, and my hands became rough. Despite having house staff, I was the only one who had to do all the complicated work.
Last night, my mother hosted a dinner party that lasted into the night. After cleaning the kitchen and dining room, I had gone into the basement to grab some more towels and had fallen asleep. I hadn't slept well in almost three years, which appeared in my once bright and lively green eyes. Eyes that I got from my father.
I hadn't slept well since his death.
I had become my mother's personal servant after my father was buried and moved into the basement. Since I was the last to see Dad, Mother said I may have made him fall into cardiac arrest by doing something to his IV.
When it came to food, I was lucky if I got to eat anything at all. If my chores were not finished, my discipline was at the discretion of Mother. Even though I loved my mother, I was not too fond of how she disciplined me. It didn't matter if others were around. I would always get yelled at by her. Occasionally, she brutally hit me in front of anyone in sight.
After leaving the basement, I headed to the kitchen. As I entered the kitchen, my mother sat at the table with her back to me so I could not see her face.
"Where have you been that you haven't even started your duties?" My mother asked. "I am sorry, Luna, it won't happen again," I replied softly.
I could no longer address her as "mom," not since that sad night.
I made my way towards the sink, not daring to make eye contact with her since doing so always made things worse. As I washed the dishes, I waited for her to say something. I could feel her cold eyes on me. Her response could be felt through her stare, and the words she said sent a chill down my spine.
"You must have been whoring around, or this would have already been completed. Now tell me where you were and with whom?" she asked sinisterly.
I knew that no matter what I told her, it would not suffice. She would eventually instruct me to grab her a broom, mop, belt, or tree branch. The only purpose of this was to discipline me. She was about to say something else when her new mate entered the kitchen and cleared his throat.
"My dear, I have a few meetings to attend this morning," Rick said, smiling, as he walked towards her and kissed her, then walked out of the kitchen.
"Play nicely, dear," he yelled as the door closed behind him.
I hated him. I never understood what she saw in him. He didn't work but always claimed he had meetings to attend to. I never knew what he did all day, and he always seemed to be in a hurry. He was always distant and cold.
"Arina," my mother's voice broke me out of my thoughts. "You know, ever since you killed your father, you have been a nuisance to this pack," Mom said as she stalked around the kitchen. When she suddenly stopped beside me, she grabbed my chin and turned my face to stare into my eyes.
"You want to know a secret?" she said.
I didn't respond or react, as I knew better. I stayed as still and quiet as I could.
Mom tilted her head slightly.
"Zeno was stupid to bring you here to love and care for you. He cared more about you than me," she said with hatred.
"Would you like to know what is even sadder?" She sneered as she removed her fingers from my chin and paused momentarily to look out the window.
"What's sad is that he worked so hard to train you, and you can't defend yourself. You're a waste of flesh. You should be dead; you should have died with him," she added.
Suddenly, her eyes widened as if she saw a ghost. She grabbed me by the neck and pushed me into the wall within seconds. Putting pressure on my windpipe, I felt her nails dig into my skin. Once she released me, I collapsed, coughing and gasping for breath.
"YOU STUPID GIRL, LOOK WHAT YOU DID"? She yelled as she kicked me in the side of my stomach.
"Ahh." I cried out as I rolled into a ball, clutching my abdomen.
Suddenly, I felt her grab my hair and drag me to the basement. As the door opened, I felt a cold draft as I was pulled through the door and down the stairs. Upon reaching the bottom, I curled into a fetal position. My lower back was completely numb, and I knew it would bruise.
I heard Mom rummaging through stuff. I looked up to see her walking back towards me with a shovel in one hand and a big leather belt in the other hand.
"YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!" she yelled, lifting the shovel and letting it fall over me. As the shovel struck my body, I screamed in pain.
"I think of you as worthless; you should be dead, and your presence sickens me." She growls at me between each strike. The pain of every blow is excruciating. With every impact, I feel my bones breaking. Despite all my attempts to cover myself, that doesn't keep me safe from her wrath. Another scream escapes my mouth as my body is unable to cope. Through my clothes, I can feel blood dripping.
Suddenly, I heard the shovel fall to the floor, and something cold struck my forehead. I knew she was now using the belt, but instead of hitting me with the leather, she hit me with the buckle, causing me to throw my head back in pain, only to be struck directly in the face once more.
I could barely breathe as she began to kick me countless times in the back of my head and back before she turned me over on my back, slapped me, and spit in my face simultaneously.
"Goddess, kill me now" was all I could think of as blow after blow came at me.
The pain was so excruciating, and I couldn't hold on anymore. I felt my body getting lighter and my vision going in and out.
The last thing I saw was Rick running towards us.
"ELENI, STOP!" he yelled at her as he pulled her off me and kneeled in front of me. It was the first time I had seen his face filled with panic.
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?" He yelled at Mom.
In an instant, everything turned black.
From Alexandre's POV "Beep beep beep, my phone alarm sounds off, signaling 4 a.m., time for a run. Three years have passed since I last slept past 4 a.m. It was not easy to get used to the alarm, but now it is music to my ears. I was about to throw the cover off me when I felt something on my waist. I looked over to the right side of the bed and saw Jessica fast asleep, her arm lying on my abdomen. Her blonde hair covered her face as she slept next to me—a sad excuse for a woman so desperate and annoying. Wearing only a red-colored baby doll, she would do anything to get my attention in hopes of being Queen. If only she had just realized her sight disgusted me. She wasn't fit to be Queen. The thought of my mother's crown upon Jessica's head made my stomach twist. I tossed her arm off me and quickly jumped out of bed, heading straight for the bathroom, not even glancing back so as not to look at her if she woke. I quickly shut the bathroom door, changed into sweatpants, and headed f
From Alexandre's POV I was still hazy from my dream before Thiago woke me. However, there were more pressing matters, so I pushed the thoughts aside and focused my attention on the current situation. Omegas were typically quiet and kept to themselves. It was odd that someone suddenly would be attacked, let alone beaten to death. "Any suspects?" I asked as Thiago and I made our way up the driveway. "As of now, no, they think it was a rogue attack. Although, something about the attack is not right." Thiago replied. "What do you mean?" I asked, staring at him in confusion. "When have rogues used sticks to beat people and not finish the job?" he asked. He had a point: Rogues kill anyone they come into contact with. The last thing they do is leave an eyewitness to a brutal attack, so the mere fact that this girl was left to die is something not heard of. "Something is not right," I replied. As we approached the packhouse, I asked, "How is Luna Eleni?" When one's mate dies, the oth
From Arina's POV I opened my eyes to find myself in a white room. I glanced around and realized I was in the hospital. I had no memory of how or when I got here. I remembered only one thing: Rick yelled at my mother. I felt a sharp pain when I tried to turn on my side. My insides felt like they had been stabbed. Suddenly, I heard the monitor beep louder, signaling the nurse to come in. "Princess, please don't move; you'll tear the stitches," the nurse said as she walked toward the monitor and turned off the alarm. "PRINCESS". I mumbled as I glanced at her. No one has said those words to me in a long time. The only person that called me was the nurse assigned to my father. I looked up at her and was surprised that the nurse who had attended to my father that very night was now attending to me. Tears filled my eyes as the memory returned. "Are you alright? Does something hurt?" she asked with profound concern. "No, I'm fine, thank you," I told her, wiping my eyes. "Then why are
From Arina's POV I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Every word coming out of my mother's mouth was shocking. "Zeno's death is something we won't be able to contain if the word gets out. The King will come seeking answers. How can we explain the last three years?" she asked in panic. "Perhaps you should have thought about that before beating her half to death," Rick replied as he left the room. Suddenly, a knock came at the door, and I heard a familiar voice. "Please accept my apologies. I didn't know you were here." Nurse Calloway said, "I'll be back later." I was glad it was her. I wanted to ask her questions. I needed answers, and she had been assigned to care for my father in his final days, so I figured she might know something. "Nurse Calloway, I was sure you were off today, but no matter, I was leaving anyway. Carry on," Mother said as she left. "You can open your eyes, Princess; she is gone," Nurse Calloway said as she approached the side of the bed. I looked at her
From Alexandre’s POV The many files I still had to read had just been piled up on my desk, but I had no energy to read them. The information Thiago provided me regarding Luna Eleni seemed wrong. I pulled out my cell phone and looked through my contacts. I knew only one person could get me the answers I wanted. I just needed to make sure he could get them immediately. Time was of the essence. I quickly dialed the number and waited for them to pick it up. "Andre, what a surprise to hear from you. How are you?" A voice over the phone asked. "I am well, and yes, it has been too long for old friends like us not to speak. How is the family?" I responded. "They are doing well, but the boys are officially getting on my nerves. They can hardly be kept in one place with all the running around. I always wanted kids, but I swear if I ever find out who came up with that damn BABY SHARK song, I promise it will be the end of them!" he replied. I laughed in amusement at the thought of him hearin
From Arina's POV "Arina" I heard someone calling my name but couldn't see where they were. I was in a field somewhere. The sky was light blue, with no clouds in sight, and the flowers were different colors. There was a light breeze. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. "Arina" I opened my eyes and glanced around. There it was again, that soft voice, so magical. I started walking in the direction I thought it came from. I kept walking straight and went to a small forest. I was about to turn back when I heard it again. "Arina" "Who's there?" I called out. Although everything in me told me to turn around and head back, I couldn't. I needed to know who had called me. After taking a deep breath, I stepped into the forest. Peace was beyond words. It wasn't dark; it was beautiful and held an unimaginable sense of peace. My eyes were drawn to a small pond. My gaze was drawn to the water when I walked over to it. It wasn't long before I saw a pair of gold-colored eyes looking back at
Alexandre's POV Dealing with all this was a headache. If there was one thing I hated the most, it was drama among packs. It was a waste of time and energy that could be better spent focusing on more important matters. I always tried my best to avoid it, but sometimes it was impossible to get away from. I wanted a peaceful pack where everyone could work together in harmony. I wanted everyone to be able to trust each other and to cooperate. I wanted everyone to be able to rely on each other. "Wishful thinking," I said aloud as I turned my attention back to the files on my desk. Addressing complaints and obtaining financial approvals was Thiago's responsibility under normal circumstances. However, since I had him digging into Eleni, I was now left with the task. I had just opened a file when a knock came knocking at the door. "Come in," I said, not bothering to look up from the file. "Andre," Thiago said as he entered my office. I glanced up at him briefly and nodded in acknowledgme
From Arina's POV "Andre?" I heard Bryan answer the call. I listened silently as he recapped what we had just experienced. It was unclear who he was talking to, but he seemed to trust them. "We are about three and a half hours away from Lycan Blood Pack, assuming we drive straight and make no stops along the way," Bryan explained to whomever he was talking to. Suddenly, he said something that caught my attention. "I can't believe Zeno never told us about her, and why did he keep it secret?" he said. I could hear the hurt in his voice, hinting that he felt betrayed. And I couldn't blame him. I felt the same when I learned the truth about my mother. After exchanging a few more words, Bryan ended the call. I glanced in the rear-view mirror just as he glanced in my direction. He smiled at me. "That was Alexandre," Bryan said. "Oh, you guys seem very close," I replied. Bryan chuckled, "Yeah, we are like brothers from another mother. He's a good guy," he said. I nodded, not wanting t
