The first day of a new job always comes with a sharp, nervous flutter in your chest. Today, that flutter felt like a warning, like the world was holding its breath and something unexpected was about to happen.
I straightened my shoulders, tried to swallow the lump in my throat, and told myself I could handle whatever this day threw at me. Little did I know, the real challenge wasn’t the work, it was the people I was about to meet.
I had woken up early, feeling a mix of anticipation and nerves. Today was my first day at Lycaon Enterprise, and I was determined to make a good impression.
So far, it has been going well. I was enjoying my day, especially with my colleague Sofia guiding me around. We went from one floor to another, meeting people and familiarizing me with the company. She was genuinely nice and gisted me about a lot of things, including how she had a huge crush on Aiden, the CFO.
We returned to the top floor only to see a stunning woman. Her presence was impossible to ignore, her figure, her posture, the way she carried herself.
“Hi, Miss Lyra,” Sofia greeted. And then it clicked. Lyra, the woman obsessed with Marcus, the CEO.
“Are you the new PA?” Lyra asked, not even acknowledging Sofia, who just shrugged as if it wasn’t the first time she’d been ignored by Lyra.
“Yes ma’am. What can I do for you?” I asked politely.
“I don’t want you too close to Marcus. Focus on your work, nothing else. He is mine. Do you understand?” Her words left me dumbfounded. Was she for real? Who even wanted Marcus before?
“Answer me. I don’t know why Marcus would hire a female PA. They mostly fall for him. I’m warning you now, any extra thoughts you have about him should die immediately,” she continued. Wow, she should have mentioned it to the CEO that she didn’t want him to have a female PA. How is that my business? And if Marcus is hers, why the insecurity?
“Don’t worry, Madam Lyra. He might mean as much as a gold ring to you. That doesn’t mean I feel the same. I won’t fall for him. We’ll keep a professional relationship. That’s it,” I reassured her.
“That’s good. You know your place. Spare me some effort,” she said, walking away.
To be honest, she was stunning, the type any man would notice, but her attitude? Terrible.
“Is that how she usually behaves, warning every girl who works with the CEO?” I asked Sofia.
“Yes. She did the same to me when I arrived. But I assured her I had no interest in Marcus, my goal was Aiden,” Sofia said with a smile.
“Does the CEO know about this?” I asked.
“I really don’t know,” she replied.
I shook my head. “Does she really think the CEO is the only good man in the world, that every woman must fall for him? She’s wrong. He’s nothing special. I don’t even like him, much less fall in love with him.” A big lie, though. It's impossible for me to be with the CEO, yet I was undeniably drawn to his presence and attracted to him.
“Really? Who looks stunned when they see me for the first time and say, ‘Is this a god or human?’” a voice said behind me, making me jump.
I turned to see Marcus the CEO, standing at the entrance to his office, his eyes locked on me with an unreadable expression. Angry? Amused? I couldn’t tell.
My face heated, embarrassment flooding me as I tried to look away. He walked toward me.
“Ah, Selena, I see you’re getting acquainted with Lyra, and she has warned you,” he said, amusement in his voice. He knew about her warning and did nothing? Did he let her act as a shield? Or was he also interested in Lyra? None of my business, really.
“Yes, sir,” I said, keeping my tone professional.
Marcus chuckled, and I squirmed under his gaze. “Let’s go. It’s almost one o’clock. I need to discuss some things with you,” he said, and walked back to his office.
I followed, stepping into the scent of leather and power. He sat on the couch, eyes piercing mine with an intensity that left me breathless.
“This is my schedule for today,” he said, low and commanding. “From tomorrow onwards, you’ll arrange my schedule. Understand?”
“Yes, sir, and what else, sir?” My voice trembled. We’d been fine joking outside, why the sudden shift in tone?
“Nothing for now. Help me sort these documents. Separate the ones that need my signature from those for review and bring them one by one.”
As I handed him the first set, our hands brushed. Electricity shot through me, tingling along my skin. His eyes locked onto mine, hunger and intensity blazing. He moved his mouth. “Mat…” but stopped mid-word.
Time froze as we stared at each other. Then, without warning, he slammed me against the wall, his body caging mine. His expression was unreadable, yet terrifyingly intense.
My body ached from the impact, I struggled to break free, pushing him, but he won't budge. He was too strong, I felt trapped. Is he really a human, with such strength? I wondered my mind racing with questions.
“Who sent you to me?” he growled, voice low and menacing.
The question hung in the air like a challenge. My heart raced. Who had sent me? And what did he mean by that?
SELENA POVYears later, when people speak of the war, they do so in softened voices. Not because it has been forgotten—but because it no longer defines us.I sometimes walk through the capital at dawn, when the streets are quiet and the magic hums low beneath the stones. At this hour, the empire feels honest. No banners. No ceremonies. Just life breathing steadily, the way it was always meant to.The fountain still stands in the heart of the city, its waters spiraling gently upward, catching the first light of morning. Children gather there every day now, laughing, splashing, daring each other to touch the glowing water. They don’t know it was once rubble. They don’t know blood stained these streets. And that is how I know we succeeded.Peace is not loud. It does not announce itself with trumpets or crowns. It reveals itself quietly—in children who are unafraid, in parents who sleep without weapons by their beds, in a world that no longer expects to break at any moment.I rest my hand
SELENA POV The grand hall of the Witch Empire was dazzling. Banners hung from the high ceiling, shimmering with silver and gold threads. Candles floated in midair, casting warm light over the polished marble floors. I stood at the entrance, my heart pounding, dressed in a gown woven with the finest magical silk, every stitch glowing faintly with protective enchantments. Today, I was not just a survivor or a warrior; today, I would become the queen. My parents were seated in the front row, holding hands, their eyes shining with pride. Elder Gideon and the council stood at attention. Members of all allied races witches, lycans, vampires, and even some high positioned humans had gathered to witness the coronation. The air was thick with magic, expectation, and hope.Marcus stood beside me, his presence steady and calming. His hand found mine, and I squeezed it, drawing strength from his touch. My Mating bond with him pulsed warmly, a reminder that no matter what had happened, we were u
EPILOGUE SELENA POV It has been days since the war ended, and ever since then we have been cleaning up the battlefield, healing the injured soldiers, and visiting the families of those who died. We comforted them, mourned with them, and promised to provide for their families.War teaches many lessons, but this one taught me the harshest, no matter how much you prepare, no matter how hard you try to minimize losses, death still comes. Too many lives were lost, too many bodies were carried away, and even the ones who survived carry wounds deeper than flesh. It made me realize that war is never a good thing. Peace, unity, and everyone having enough to eat, living happily without fear, that is the best life anyone can ask for. And that is the life I want to build.Because of this realization, I chose to spare the remaining members of Ayla’s army and the vampires who surrendered. Ayla’s army had been made mostly of witches anyway, they were only obeying their leaders, even though that d
SELENA POVThe battlefield stretched before me, a mixture of scorched earth, shattered magic, and the stench of blood. Ayla’s forces had regrouped, and the vampires and witches formed their lines, confident that I would falter. I could feel their arrogance, their overconfidence, and it fueled the fire that had been burning inside me since the moment I learned my parents were in danger.Lyra stepped forward, her expression hard but tinged with remorse. “Selena, you need to know the truth,” she said, voice trembling. “Ayla manipulated everything. The betrayals, the lies, it wasn’t all her doing. She forced me to help her with the covens, with the traps, with the false mate bonds”I clenched my fists, the raw energy of my tribrid power coursing through me. My hybrid claws extended instinctively, and witch-fire flared around my hands. “Enough excuses, Lyra. You can explain later. Right now, I need to stop her,” I said, my voice sharp, queen-like, commanding.Ayla appeared at the far end o
