Chapter 3

Author: Golden Cicada
Sienna adored that charm, so I had never thought to replace it.

Jennifer obviously got the wrong idea, but I did not feel like clearing it up and just answered the call.

Sienna's voice came through, tinged with impatience.

"Dad, you're so slow! The game's about to start, and Mom's got your favorite snacks. We're nearly there. How much longer will you take?"

I quickly reassured her with a chuckle. "Hold on, sweetie. I'm going to change my shirt, and I'll be right there."

I had every right to demand Alfred pay for the clothes he ruined, but my daughter was pressing me, so I dropped the issue.

After ending the call, I was ready to walk away when Jennifer's grip on my wrist stopped me. Her stunning face was clouded with a flash of rage.

"Who's that woman you were talking to, the one who got you laughing like that?"

I raised an eyebrow and pulled away. "None of your business."

Alfred shot me a venomous look, his eyes betraying a flicker of envy.

"Jen, that's probably one of Nelson's sugar mommies on the line, asking him for a 'sleepover'. Guys like him bring down the whole vibe of our circle," he sneered.

Jennifer kept her cool, shooting him a silencing glare as she snapped, "Cut it out, Alfred. Show some class.

Alfred backed down, seething but silent.

I was taken aback. I never thought Jennifer would take my side.

Alfred and I had been at each other's throats for ages.

He would use my sketches for kindling, so I would use his fancy clothes for firewood. He would dump his meals on me while I would douse him with soup.

However, whenever he complained to Jennifer, she would come after me without a second thought.

She had cut me off financially, even kicking me out into the freezing night.

I had lost all faith in her, so her sudden defense felt both strange and laughable.

I could not stand her two-faced act any longer and walked away without a backward glance.

Jennifer bit her lip, reaching out to me, but Alfred's arms were already wrapping around her from behind.

"Jen, Nelson's just playing games. He knows you're into him, and he's loving the attention. If you chase him, he'll just play you even more. Don't fall for his act!"

I ignored the buzz around me and made a beeline for the locker room.

Once I was suited up and ready to hit the competition floor, security blocked my path.

Alfred was there, looming beside them.

His eyes were stormy as he pointed at me, his voice booming, "That's the guy who crashed the event. Kick him out now!"

The guard eyed me with a stern look. "Sir, your invitation, please."

I raised an eyebrow and replied, I'm the one running the show here. No invite needed."

The words had barely left my lips when Alfred's mocking laughter cut through the air.

"This event is the brainchild of Ms. Smith and her husband. Nelson, are you going to stand there and tell me you're Ms. Smith's husband? What's the hold-up? Get this liar out of here!"

The guards, wary of crossing Alfred, closed in on me.

"Sorry about this, sir."

They started dragging me away. Dressed in my formal attire, I struggled as I exclaimed, "Hands off! I'm one of the judges!"

In the tussle, my bracelet snapped and hit the floor.

Alfred snatched it up, his face darkening, eyes roiling with envy like poison-tipped arrows aimed at me.

"Nelson, you're the worst! Rejecting Jen in public but clinging to her gift like a secret treasure. Well, I won't let you charm her!"

With that, he chucked the bracelet into a trash can with a loud clatter.

I paused, my voice turning ice-cold. "Alfred, it's game over for you."

That bracelet was a wedding present from Carol Smith herself.

It might have resembled Jennifer's gift, but its value was through the roof.

If Carol, with her dark mood, ever found out someone tossed the love token she gave me, she would probably be furious enough to commit murder.

Alfred's rage spiked at my response, and he lifted his hand to strike me.

However, in a flash, another hand clamped down on his wrist.

A woman's voice, cool and nonchalant with an undercurrent of deadly seriousness, cut through the tension.

"Who do you think you are, daring to touch my husband?"

Jennifer felt defeated, her sighs coming out weak and breathless. When she looked up, our eyes met from across the second floor. She quickly looked away and scurried out of sight.I put my wine glass down and headed downstairs. In the shadows, Jennifer was standing alone, taking a deep, weary breath."What are you doing here?" I asked, even though I knew the answer.Jennifer stood there, stiff as a board. "Nelson..."Seeing me again, her usual pride and self-importance had all but vanished, replaced by a look of careful vigilance.Jennifer glanced at me, her lips parched as she moistened them."About what happened last time… Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"I shook my head. "Carol got there in time. I'm fine.""That's a relief..."Silence hung in the air for a brief moment before Jennifer blurted out a question."Nelson, did I mess up?"I raised an eyebrow and asked, "Mess up? What did you mess up?"She looked lost. "Was I too nice to Alfred back then? If I hadn't been, m

Reeling from the kick and breaking out in a cold sweat, Jennifer's voice trembled as she asked, "Alfred, do you even understand what you're doing?"With his head held high, Alfred retorted, "I know exactly what I'm doing. Let's get one thing straight. I've been fed up with you for ages. For three years, I've been asking for some legitimacy, but you've stubbornly refused, leaving me to be mocked as the gigolo. Who are you trying to fool with your so-called deep love?"You're fond of Nelson, right? Well, today, you're going to watch him get degraded."Alfred seized Jennifer by the hair, his smirk directed at me like a challenge."Let's get this show on the road."I watched the men charge at me with a cool detachment. Then, suddenly, the sound of gunfire erupted from outside, and one by one, the attackers crumpled to the ground.Alfred's eyes widened in shock, his gaze snapping to the door.Carol and Sienna strode in, flanked by a squad of cops.Alfred's instinct was to bolt, but

There was that time halfway up the mountain when Alfred lost his oxygen tank and stubbornly used mine instead. I nearly blacked out from the lack of oxygen while Jennifer was busy snapping perfect photos with Alfred. The memories were countless, so haunting that even three years after leaving Jennifer, I would still wake up from nightmares, drenched in sweat. Was that the love Jennifer always talked about?'If so, it's a blessing I can live without,' I mused bitterly.Jennifer's voice was low and filled with regret."Nelson, ever since you left, I've realized you're the one I truly love. Give me another chance, will you? I swear I'll treat you right for the rest of my life."If you're worried about Carol not wanting a divorce, we could just run away together. We'll start fresh abroad with new identities and build a new business."Her proposal was so ludicrous I almost laughed out loud. I could not even muster the energy to engage with her anymore and got up to leave. However, J

Carol was a titan in the marketplace, and her declaration was like a battle cry against the Porter family. It meant that from then on, no one would dare to ally with the Porters, effectively backing them into a corner.Without another glance at them, Carol took Sienna's hand and linked her other arm with mine, her eyes softening."The cake's going to melt if we wait any longer. Let's go have some cake," she said. However, just as we were about to move, Jennifer stepped in our way.Jennifer's face was ashen as she pleaded, "Ms. Smith, our companies have been partners for so long. To suddenly end our partnership would be a loss for both of us. I'll make it right with Mr. Chapman, whatever it takes. Please reconsider."Carol arched an eyebrow. "Whatever it takes?"Jennifer's fingers were white-knuckled as she nodded.A sly smile crept onto Carol's face. "Your secretary was about to slap Nelson and even tossed his bracelet. I expect him to face the consequences."Without a moment's

The security guards flinched before quickly straightening up and addressing Carol with formal politeness."Good day, Ms. Smith!"Carol released Alfred's hand, stepped over to me, and with gentle precision, she fixed my rumpled collar."Sorry I'm late. You're not hurt, are you?"Sienna, tears streaming down her face, barreled into my embrace. "Daddy, I don't want you to get hurt!"Alfred stood there, dumbstruck, his mouth hanging open."Husband? Impossible. How could you be Ms. Smith's husband?"Carol's finger paused mid-air, her icy gaze slicing through him."So, you think I'm not good enough for my own husband?"Alfred scrambled to clarify. "No... That's not what I meant."He bit his lip, shooting me a venomous look."Ms. Smith, you don't know the half of it. This man's been wearing a bracelet his ex-wife gave him, clearly can't get over her. Don't let him pull the wool over your eyes."Carol's eyebrow arched, her eyes glancing at the empty space on my wrist. "Ex-wife's br
