Brandon POv

We didn’t sleep.

Not even a little.

Cameron kept his phone on the coffee table, screen face-up, like it was a bomb that could go off at any second. Every time it lit up, my chest squeezed. Even the dumb spam notifications made me flinch.

By three in the morning, the house was silent except for the clock on the wall and our breathing. I was curled against him, my head on his shoulder, but neither of us was relaxed. His arm tightened around me every time I shifted, like if he let go, I’d vanish.

“Cam,” I whispered into the dark. “What if he’s already outside?”

He didn’t even hesitate. “Then I’ll make sure he doesn’t get inside.”

I tilted my head to look at him. The moonlight through the blinds cut across his face, sharp lines, sharp jaw, sharp determination. He looked like someone ready for war.

“Don’t,” I said softly. “Don’t make it sound easy.”

His throat worked, but he didn’t answer.

The knock came at four.
