MasukRyan POV
Ethan. He really knew how to press my buttons. He was sly, always looking for ways to get on my nerves. This wasn’t the first time he had clashed with me. He had always done it since high school. He confessed to the cheerleader I liked in high school. He confessed to another crush of mine at an all-girls school. And now it was Jessica. Must he always take everything from me? He knew I grew up without a family. He knew it was always hard for me to fall in love. But why did he keep trying to beat me? “Are you visiting the club this evening?” Champ, my best friend, asked, taking the seat beside me. “I heard Jessica is showing up there too.” He patted my back teasingly. “Seriously?” “Yeah, she is. But don’t cry when you get rejected, because I’m sure Ethan’s gonna be there and he’ll taunt you.” His lips twisted into a smug grin that always meant he was teasing me. “I won’t.” I rolled my eyes at him. He and Ethan were friends but not as close as he was to me. Anytime I fought with Ethan, he always ended up supporting him and scolding me. The thought made me smack the back of his head. “What was that for?” he asked, rubbing his head. “Let’s go to the party.” --- By evening, the streets were buzzing. I started my bike and cut through traffic, the engine vibrating against my legs. I knew Jessica was going to be there. And Ethan—fuck him—he was going to be lurking around, smirking and waiting for me to lose my cool. The neon sign of the café bar flickered ahead. The place was crowded like every other night, lights spilling out onto the pavement, music thumping so hard I could feel it in my chest before I even parked. Champ shoved me with his shoulder when we got off the bikes. “Don’t act desperate, fool. Girls don’t like desperate guys. They like guys who play hard to get.” “Shut the fuck up,” I muttered, tugging at my jacket. “I’m not desperate.” Instead of encouraging me, he was teasing me. I entered the club. The bouncers already knew me and Champ as regulars. I was already scanning the crowd for Jessica. That girl had something that got under my skin and refused to leave. And it pissed me off that Ethan had noticed it too. Inside, the air smelled like beer and cigars. The music was loud enough to make my ears ring. A group of girls shrieked near the bar, and my heart raced when I caught sight of her—Jessica. She was at the corner table sipping a drink, looking so good I almost forgot to breathe. But here was the problem: she wasn’t alone. That son of a bitch was with her. Ethan sat across from her, leaning in, his stupid smirk plastered on his face — the one that always meant he thought he had already won. He should wait until I beat him. Jessica laughed at something he said, and the sound cut through me like a blade. “Goddamn it,” I muttered. Champ followed my gaze. “Oh shit,” he whispered. “Don’t lose it, Ryan, not here.” But I was already fuming. My fists clenched at my sides, my jaw locked so hard I thought my teeth would crack. Of course Ethan was here first. Of course he would always swoop in like a vulture. He was always two steps ahead, like he could read my mind. I stalked toward their table before Champ could stop me. My boots squeaked against the floor. Each step fueled my rage and the caffeine from earlier. Jessica’s eyes widened when she saw me. She smiled and waved, and I nodded back. Ethan just leaned back, calm as ever, like he had been expecting me. “Well, look who decided to crawl out of his cave,” Ethan drawled. “Fuck you, Ethan,” I snapped. “You just can’t help yourself, can you?” I hissed in a low voice so Jessica wouldn’t hear. “Well, Jessica invited me. Deal with it,” Ethan replied with a smug smile. That made me grab his shirt collar. Jessica frowned at us. “Ryan—” she called in a sweet voice. I smiled at her, loosening my grip on Ethan’s collar. I could hear Jessica saying something to me but I wasn’t listening. My glare stayed on Ethan. “You know I liked her, so back off,” I said, my voice low so only Ethan could hear. “You always know, and yet here you are again. Can’t you refuse to come with her?” Ethan tilted his head, his smirk deepening. “What, you think the world revolves around you? That every girl you like is suddenly off-limits? Newsflash, Ryan. Jessica isn’t your property.” My blood boiled at how loudly he spoke. Jessica probably heard it. “You piece of shit…” Champ’s hand landed on my shoulder, holding me back. “Ryan, chill. Don’t cause trouble here, man. You know Ethan is trying to rile you,” he whispered in my ear. Jessica’s voice came next, cutting through. “Enough! What the hell is wrong with you two? I’m not some trophy for you guys to fight over.” I swallowed hard, her words hitting me. She was right, but that didn’t erase the rage that built up in me. It didn’t erase the betrayal I felt every time Ethan pushed his way into my life. Ethan stood slowly, his eyes never leaving mine. “Tell you what, Ryan. The next race, if you beat me, I’ll walk away from Jessica.” The room seemed to shrink. My heart thundered. Finally, I had a reason to beat Ethan. “Fine,” I spat. “But when I beat your smug ass, don’t come crawling back with excuses.” Ethan smirked again, that cocky curve of his lips making my fists itch. “We’ll see.” Jessica looked between us, clearly annoyed, but I couldn’t focus on her anymore. My veins were already pumping with adrenaline, with the thought of racing and finally crushing him. Champ sighed beside me. “You two are insane. But damn it, I’m here for it.” --- Later that night, back at the garage, I couldn’t sit still. My hands shook as I tightened bolts that didn’t need tightening on my bike. My bike looked neat under the moonlight, dark and polished just for the race. I caught my reflection in the glass of my bike. My eyes looked wild and dark circles surrounded them like I hadn’t slept for days. “Why do you let him get to you so much?” Champ asked quietly, leaning against the wall with a can of beer. I didn’t answer right away because I didn’t know how to explain it — how Ethan had been the shadow in every corner of my life, taking every chance that should’ve been mine. Finally, I muttered, “Because I can’t stand losing to him. I lost to him in high school many times, but not this time.” Champ shook his head. “Are you sure this is all about Jessica? You look like you just want to beat him for once.” He sighed, sipping his beer. “Maybe,” I admitted, my voice cracking. Was it true? “But fuck it. I would rather lose Jessica with him than let him get her.” “Tsk. Good luck with that,” Champ said, still sipping his beer. Stupid friend.Ethan pov"Shit, shit," Ryan whispered, more to himself than to me.I watched through the screen as he scrambled upright, blinking against the morning light. He had fallen asleep last night without even realizing his camera was still on, his face half buried in his pillow while I finished the last chapter of my textbook."Morning, baby," I cooed, leaning my chin on my hand.He startled, nearly knocking his phone off the nightstand. He stared at the screen, looking unbelievably confused. "Did I fall asleep leaving you on the phone?""Obviously.""And you didn’t put the call off?""Why would I do that?" I teased, a smirk pulling at my lips. "I enjoy seeing your pretty face. It’s satisfying. And honestly? Your little snores are funny and cute. I had a soundtrack for my studying."Ryan groaned, dragging a hand over his face. "Isn't it too early to be teasing me? I probably look like a wreck.""You look perfect," I countered, watching him roll out of bed.He didn't hang up. He propped the
Ryan povI glanced at the time on my phone and nearly choked on my drink. It was already twenty-five minutes past the time Fatima had given me for the lunch break."I have to go to work! I’ll call you back by evening," I said hurriedly into the camera.Ethan didn't even get a chance to say goodbye before I cut the call and sprinted back toward the store. My heart was thumping against my ribs. Great, first day and I’m already the guy who can’t keep track of time. When I slid back behind the counter, out of breath, Fatima just looked at her watch and then at me. She didn't scold me, though. She just gave me a knowing smirk that said I told you so without her having to utter a word. The rest of the afternoon was a blur. Customers came and went, some were nice while some were grumpy, it was a different kind of experience but I kept my head down and kept scanning. The beep and the swipe of the cards started to feel natural. As the sun began to set through, Fatima came closer and leaned aga
Ryan pov The sudden knock on my door woke me from my slumber. Who was that knocking on my door so early? “Mom?” I called out but got no reply. “Buddy.” The door flew opened and champ walked in jumping on me. “Why are you still asleep dude? It’s basically 9am.” “And…?” I asked trying to get him off me. “And remember you called me last night to take you to the mall.” “What mall?” I rubbed at my eyes looking at him weirdly…. “Shit!” I threw my blanket off me and jumped down the bed heading to the bathroom. Mum told me she was going to be busy today, she asked if I could go to the mall myself but my prideful ass said yes. Turns out i’m a chicken who is shy. “Give me some minutes dude.” Champ paid me no attention. He just nodded at me still on his phone. I brushed my teeth as fast as I could, It took me six minutes to scrub down my whole body and bolt out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around my waist. It wasn't my fault I was still in bed. I had slept late last night just by
Ryan POV“Ohh, no one told me I have this good looking boyfriend.”“Bullshit.” Ethan said. I shifted the phone, propping it against a stack of books so I could see him better. Ethan’s face filled the screen, and even though the lightening looked dim, he looked incredible.“Ohh, no one told me I have this good looking boyfriend,” I said, leaning my chin on my palm.Ethan rolled his eyes, but a smirk tugged at his lips. “Bullshit, Ryan. You say that every time I call.”“Because it’s true every time,” I countered. “How’s life as a future doctor? Still drowning in classes?”“Beyond drowning,” he sighed, leaning back. I could see the thick medical textbooks piled behind him. “I spent six hours today labeling parts of the brain I didn't even know existed. My head feels like it’s going to explode, and I still have a quiz at 8:00 AM. But enough about my misery. Tell me about your day. Did you actually go outside?”I laughed softly. “I did. I took a walk, helped Mom with the garden, and spent
Champ POVWe were in Kyle’s room, surrounded by open suitcases and half packed boxes. His clothes were littered everywhere. I was folding his shirts the way he liked while he zipped up his toiletries bag and tossed it in.He’d been quiet for a minute, then just stared up like me like he just remembered something, “Kayla’s picking me up in like thirty minutes, She’s driving me herself to the district.”I stopped mid fold, his shirt dangling from my hand. “Today? I thought we said tomorrow, You were gonna wait so I could drive you.”He didn’t look up right away. “Noooo, I told you Kayla’s coming with me. She offered. Her car’s bigger than mine anyway, i need more space for the bags.”I raised an eyebrow, setting the shirt down slow. “Bigger car? I’ve got bigger cars, Kyle.”He finally looked at me, lips twitching like he was fighting a smile. “Is my boyfriend showing off right now?”“Maybe.” I stepped closer, crowding him against the dresser. “Just saying. If it’s about space, I’ve got
Ryan POV“How was therapy today?” Ethan asked, placing his phone on the desk so the camera caught more of his face. He was in his dorm room, lazily throwing his coat on the chair.“Face-timing you made it way better,” I said, smiling even though my chest still felt a little tight from the session. “You didn’t call me earlier, though. I thought you didn’t love me anymore.”He rolled his eyes, but the corner of his mouth lifted. “Drama queen. I was stuck in a three hour lecture, I couldn’t exactly sneak out to call my needy boyfriend.”I propped my phone against the pillow and flopped back on my bed, staring up at the ceiling for a second before looking back at him. “Needy? I’m wounded.”“You’re fine.” His voice softened. “Tell me for real. How’d it go?”I shrugged one shoulder. “It’s the same boo, as last week. The therapist said I’m making progress, whatever that means. I just want to feel normal again.”Ethan nodded slowly, like he was filing every word away. “You will, you’re alread
Champ POV“Oh my God.” Surprise washed over me as I caught sight of those two cuddled together in the small hospital bed. Thank goodness the others were outside, if Marco, Kyle, or Ash had seen this, they’d probably have died from sheer embarrassment.Ryan looked up, eyes widening when he realized
Ethan POVMy head ached as I tried to pull my eyes open.I tried raising my hands, but they felt heavy, like something was pressing them down.I stretched until I could finally sit up. Someone was holding my hand, taking a nap by my bedside.I glanced at the phone on the table — 1:00 a.m. The dim l
Ryan’s POVThe moment Ethan turned and walked away, the world went silent.I stood there, frozen, my own heartbeat too loud in my ears. The words I had thrown at him, 'I don’t like you' kept replaying in my head like a cruel echo.God, why did I say it like that?I meant to sound calm. I meant to k
Ryan’s POV"I like you, Ryan!"For a second, my brain froze. Then I laughed loudly like a full on belly laugh. “Jesus, Ethan, what the heck are you doing? Are you out of your mind?”He blinked at me with wide eyes, looking so serious that it made me laugh even harder. “Are you mad? Disgracing yours
