Chapter 3

Author: Stack Up
Carissa's alternative account handle was "@traceless_wind", and she'd only ever posted two things.

The first one was from seven years ago. "Tania just told me she likes Wendell. I didn't say a thing, but wasn't I the one who knew him first? I was merely vetting him, waiting to see if he would confess to me a second time!"

There were no comments below it.

The second one was from three years ago, posted on the exact same day as Wendell's tweet.

@traceless_wind: "Stop it, Wendell. Tania's my best friend. We can never be together."

@youthfulreverie: "I'm only dating her to punish you. Have you ever regretted your choice?"

@traceless_wind: "I have, but Tania's my best friend. I can't do this to her."

Gaping at their exchange, I felt as though I had been submerged in freezing water. Seven years. Wendell and Carissa had known each other for seven years and had been pining for each other for just as long.

Meanwhile, I had been a tool from the very beginning—a tool for Wendell to punish Carissa and a tool for Carissa to prove she was a "good friend".

With trembling fingers, I dug deeper. The last activity on that alternative account was three months ago.

Carissa had left a comment on one of Wendell's tweets. He had already deleted his post, but her reply was still there.

@traceless_wind: "How many times do I have to tell you, Wendell? Tania's my best friend. Stop pestering me! I'm going to marry my boyfriend, so you should treat Tanya well, too."

My hands were literally trembling when I read that. Boyfriend? Carissa didn't have a boyfriend back then.

She only told me about her and Gavin last week. Who the hell was she referring to three months ago?

I pulled up Carissa's social media and started scrolling backward, all the way to three months ago. Everything she had posted at the time was the kind of content a single woman would share.

Carissa: "I love eating barbecue alone. It's the best!"

Carissa: "Got rejected by another blind date today, boohoo."

Carissa: "Watching other couples show off their love is making me so jealous."

It was all an act.

When on earth did she and Gavin even become a thing? Could it be that… Gavin wasn't her actual boyfriend?

All of a sudden, I remembered the day Carissa brought Gavin to dinner. Gavin barely said a word the entire night. He only mechanically placed food on her plate, refilled her glass, and wiped the corner of her mouth.

He was like an actor who was hired specifically to put on a show.

My heart missed a beat. I opened a search tab and entered his name.

Carissa had previously tagged his workplace in a post. It was a tech firm where he supposedly worked as a programmer. I searched that company, but no such person existed.

I looked up Gavin's contact number next. It was a newly registered number, activated just a month ago.

My blood ran cold. Carissa had hired an actor to play her boyfriend. But why? Why the hell would she stage a relationship right in front of me?

I scrolled through her recent posts. The very first time she flaunted her relationship was last week. The dinner when she introduced Gavin to us was also last week.

All of a sudden, the scales fell from my eyes. She had brought Gavin to dinner so Wendell would see him. She'd done that to provoke him, to drive him over the edge, and to force him to break up with me.

Carissa was using her fake relationship to force my boyfriend's hand.

She wanted Wendell, but she didn't want the infamy of stealing her best friend's man, so she put on this performance. She wanted Wendell to take the initiative to break up with me. Then, she could reluctantly accept him, keeping her reputation flawless.

Meanwhile, I was expected to thank her for "being considerate of me". I guffawed and burst into tears.

Ten years. For ten long years, Carissa and I had been friends. Yet, she had been playing me for a fool for seven of them. This final stroke of hers was the most lethal.

I stared at her feed. I had actually liked that photo of her and Gavin being all lovey-dovey.

At the time, I was genuinely happy for her. I had told Wendell, "Carissa's finally found someone."

I had even comforted Wendell, telling him, "Don't read too much into it."

I locked my phone and took a deep breath, thinking, "Carissa, I've been playing my part for a decade, but the curtain falls here."

Rising from the couch, I flung open the wardrobe and hauled out a suitcase. I began to pack my clothes, my skincare products, my laptop, and my savings book holding three years' worth of my salary. I crammed them in, one by one.

When I got to the third drawer, I spotted a small red box. I opened it. It was the ring Wendell had given me last Valentine's Day. I had mistaken it for an engagement ring.

I had been so excited that my hands were shaking that day. Yet, when I'd opened it, it was just a plain silver band. There was no diamond.

He had smiled and said, "Let's not get caught up in superficial things. I'll make it up to you when we're better off."

I had been deeply touched. I'd genuinely believed he wanted to build a life with me.

I hurled the ring into the trash. It hit the bottom with a harsh clink. The sound reverberated through the room, snapping like a tightly wound string inside my heart.

I was only halfway done when the rattle of keys came from the front door. Wendell was back. He pushed the door open and walked in with a takeout bag.

Noticing me kneeling on the floor, packing my things, he froze. "What do you think you're doing, Tania?"

  • Roasted Her for Years, Loved Her Always   Chapter 10

Robin poked his head out from the kitchen. "Who was that?""An old acquaintance," I smiled. "It wasn't anything important."He walked out with two bowls. It was the risotto he had just learned how to make, and it tasted surprisingly like home, reminding me of Mom's recipe. I took a sip, looked up, and beamed at him. "It's delicious!"His eyes crinkled into a smile. "In that case, I'll make it for you every day from now on." Sleep eluded me that night. Robin was fast asleep. He was a quiet sleeper; he didn't snore or kick off his blanket.Gazing at his profile, I suddenly remembered that night a year ago and that single tear running down Wendell's face under the streetlight. Back then, I honestly thought I would never be able to move on for the rest of my life. Yet, here I am now, lying right beside a gentle man. I had a job that fulfilled me. Every morning when I woke up, my eyes were bright, my heart was warm, and my steps were light. I no longer asked, "Why?"I no longer

  • Roasted Her for Years, Loved Her Always   Chapter 9

Robin was a gentle soul. The first time we met, he was wearing a light gray sweater. He was quiet and a man of few words, but every single time I spoke, he listened intently. It took us three months to collaborate on that project. During those three months, he never once asked about my past, nor did he beat around the bush to test the waters. He simply made sure a delicious cup of coffee was waiting for me at every single meeting. I liked my lattes with less sugar and an extra shot of espresso. Every time I worked late into the night, he would offer, "I'll drive you home. I'm going in that direction anyway."His office sat on the eastern side of the city, whereas my house was on the western side. In other words, it wouldn't be convenient for him at all.But that was how we slowly, naturally, grew closer.…Robin asked me out to dinner on the day our project ended. Then, he drove me home. When we reached the bottom of my building, he stopped in his tracks. "Ms. Black.""Ye

I hummed in response."She also claimed that Wendell promised her, 'as long as she took care of Tania', he would marry her. The cops went to interrogate Wendell, but he's fighting it tooth and nail. He insists he never said anything of the sort and that Carissa was slandering him."I chuckled. Just as I thought, Wendell and Carissa were permanently chained to each other for the rest of their miserable lives. I didn't even need to drop the receipts. Their scandal had already spread like wildfire through our college. Neither of them would ever be able to live this down. I wrapped up the call and went right back to revising my proposal.…During the third week, I received a call from Wendell. I was right in the middle of a meeting with a client that day. More than 20 people were seated in the conference room when my phone vibrated. I took a look at the caller ID. It was an unknown number. Hence, I answered. "Hello."There was a three-second silence on the other end. "It's me, T

  • Roasted Her for Years, Loved Her Always   Chapter 7

The day before I left for Silverwood, Wendell suddenly showed up downstairs at Mom's house. He was clutching a bouquet of white roses—my favorite flowers in college. The moment I opened the door, he dropped to his knees with a heavy thud. "Please give me a chance to explain myself, Tania!"I gazed at him. "Wendell.""Yeah.""Get up."He lifted his head, his eyes brimming with tears. "Don't drive me away, Tania. Carissa doesn't love me. After you broke up with me, she didn't want me anymore; she just loves the chase!""Go home." I looked into his teary eyes. At long last, he was willing to shed tears for me. Yet, looking at his face, all I could see was the last three years of being used, three years of watching him choose her over me, and three years of settling for scraps. I smiled. "Wendell.""Yeah!""I've seen your messages on X. You were just using me to make her jealous, weren't you? Let's just leave it at that. Don't ever show your face around me again!"He abruptly

When the elevator hit the first floor, I took a deep breath and walked out of the apartment complex gates. It was drizzling outside, and I didn't have an umbrella. The fine rain slanted into me, and it felt incredibly cold. It was a rather nice feeling.I took a cab to my mother Tamara Preston's house. The moment she opened the door and saw me, she was dumbstruck. "Tania, what are you—""Mom, I broke up with Wendell." Mom didn't say a word; she simply stepped aside and let me in. I rolled my suitcase into the living room. The room was filled with the comforting scent of freshly made risotto. Mom brought a bowl of it over and placed it in front of me. "Eat up. Everything else can wait."I stared at the bowl, and all of a sudden, the waterworks began. However, I wasn't crying over Wendell or Carissa, but over Mom. Mom had been an elementary school teacher all her life. She'd never commented on my love life. Instead, without fail, every time I returned home, she'd make me a bow

Wendell's expression stiffened. His jaw dropped, and for a long while, he couldn't utter a single word. Sinking to my knees, I gathered the clothes I'd just thrown on the floor and continued jamming them into my suitcase. "Tania, what did you just say?" At last, he found his voice again, though it was shaky. "You're breaking up with me?" "Yep," I answered without looking up."Why would you—""Wendell." I rose to my feet and slapped a stack of savings passbooks onto the table before him. "I've lived here for a year. I'm the one who paid the rent and utilities. I'm the one who bought the gold bracelet for your mother's birthday. "I bought the suit you wore for your promotion. I even bought the outfit for your company's team-building event." I paused before continuing, "The most expensive thing you've ever bought me was a 99-dollar lipstick." Wendell's pale face flushed crimson. "Are you seriously making this about money? You're actually keeping score?" I jeered. "I am. Enli
