LOGINI have a poor sense of direction. I can go to the same place ten times and still not know how to get there. So, Aimee Thornton spends an entire week putting all the streets around school into a hand-drawn map for me. There are no directions on the map, only places named "The Convenience Store With the Yellow Dog at the Door" and "The Old Man Who Sells Terrible Tacos". She ruffles my hair and muses, "How is this one going to survive without me?" But everything changes when our friend, Dean Sullivan, comes home from abroad. During our trip, Aimee tells me to get out of the car and check if we've skidded. My feet have just touched the ground when the car speeds off. She texts me the next second. "There's a rest area about three miles ahead. Dean and I will wait for you there. Dean has a point. You'll never get over your poor sense of direction if I don't give you a push." I end up trekking through the torrential downpour for an hour, desperate and panicking. Aimee suddenly sends me a hand-drawn map with an arrow, and she's added a cute smiley face beside it. "Follow the map, and you'll be there in 20 minutes." Alas, I walk until my calves ache, only for the road to narrow and cut off in a dead end. I call Aimee, but Dean's lighthearted laughter greets me instead. "Hey, man, congratulations on taking the wrong way! "I made a bet with Aimee that you wouldn't notice the arrow she'd drawn on the map was deliberately pointing in the opposite direction. As it turns out, I know you better than she does. "And that means I'm the only one she gets to hang out with for the rest of the trip, since having you tag along will be too much trouble." I hear Aimee's indulgent laugh going off beside him. "A bet's a bet. Whatever you say goes, Dean." The price of codependency is too much for me—so much so that I'll be lost if Aimee decides to up and leave me. I wipe my tears dry. I want to find my way alone this time.
View MoreI took a fresh napkin and laid it flat before Erin. "Could you draw the map again, Dr. Anders? I'm afraid dirt got on the first one."Aimee's voice trembled. "What did you just say, Nathan?"I lifted my gaze to her face. "I said, you got dirt on my map.""I was the only one who'd show you how to get to places back in the day," she hissed."Yeah, and you showed me how to get to a dead end. If I'd followed the map you gave me, I would've lost the other leg."All the blood drained from Aimee's face.Erin picked up her pen again and drew the same red flags from the old map on the new napkin."All done. See you this weekend!" She stood up and slid the napkin toward me.I carefully folded the napkin and put it in my pocket. "See you."Aimee didn't leave and waited until I'd wrapped up my shift that night. Her eyes were bloodshot as she said, "We've known each other for 20 years, Nathan. 20 whole years! I was your whole life between the ages of six and 26!"She pointed at herself, h
For the next half of the month, an expensive phantom haunted the streets of Leardon.I went to the neighborhood supermarket to grab a frozen pizza, only for the cashier to hand me a bag containing the pizza I'd wanted. "Mr. Huntley, the lady with the glasses outside has paid for this."I followed the cashier's gaze and saw Aimee standing outside the floor-to-ceiling window, staring at me through the glass. I immediately slid the bag back to the cashier. "Void the sale now. I'll pay it with my card."The card-reading machine beeped as my payment went through, and I left the supermarket with the repacked frozen pizza. Aimee greeted me immediately and tried to take the plastic carrier bag from me. "Let me help you with the bag. It's heavy."I dodged to the side, avoiding her hand. "Stop feeling so self-important, Aimee."Her hand hung in midair, and her chest rose and fell rapidly. "I'm only trying to do something for you."I studied her face, which was pale from all her late nigh
The rain in Leardon stopped.Aimee had played two trump cards consecutively. First, she ruined Dean, and second, she destroyed Dad's family and business. However, I had blocked her number in return.Things were not going as she'd planned. From what she knew about me, I was supposed to be the loser who couldn't survive without her. I should have been crying and begging her to take me home after I'd gotten her gifts."Your red wine, Ms. Thornton." The waiter set the glass of red wine before her.Aimee picked up the glass by its stem but didn't drink the wine. The scene from the cafe yesterday played through her mind. She remembered the cool indifference in my eyes when I'd told her the price of the black coffee. There had been neither resentment nor disgruntlement in my eyes, only a calm look that one might give a stranger. It made her feel an unprecedented sense of panic.Just then, there was a commotion at the restaurant entrance. A man in a khaki coat shoved the waiters aside an
I returned to the apartment after my shift to the sound of an argument at the stairwell. I hurried up the steps, only to find Aimee standing outside my apartment door with an ornate box of tonics in hand.Mom stood at the door like a steadfast guardian, holding up a broomstick."Janice, these tonics are great for your immune system, especially given how cold and damp Leardon is. Nathan might not know any better, but you can't let this farce continue! Don't you feel bad seeing him struggle here?"She was trying to find a breakthrough with Mom. As far as Aimee was concerned, all she had to do was get Mom on her side, and I'd be cornered. After all, Mom had once trusted her without question."Shut up!" Mom's voice trembled with rage. "How dare you show your face around here, Aimee? Did you ever consider how my heart would break for Nathan when you let Dean make up all those rumors?"Impatience colored Aimee's tone as she countered, "I've already sorted out that mess, Janice, and Dean
