ELLA I can hear voices surrounding me but all I can see is black. Every inch of my body feels like it is being engulfed in flames. I try to open my eyes, but it is as if they are sewn shut and my limbs feel as if they are made of lead. I can’t move, I can’t speak, so I can only burn in agony alone. Everything is dark until a memory fills my mind. “But I don’t want to be homeschooled,” I pout pushing my plate away from me in anger. Ten year old me is sitting with her arms crossed over her chest in protest. My brother, Emerson is pushing his vegetables across his plate refusing to eat them. My father, Andrew, pokes him in the side and points to the veggies with his eyebrows furrowed together in frustration. Emerson pops a piece of broccoli in his mouth and pretends to gag before he begrudgingly chews and swallows. “Ella,” my mother says gently. “It is time that you start your training.” “But I don’t even have powers,” I pout again. My mother uses her emotions to calm the t
ELLA The cold night of my first shift fades away and a new memories surge forth. Birthday after birthday rips through my mind. Disappointment after disappointment with every birthday morning I woke up powerless. The moments pause on my eighteenth birthday. The ringing of a phone awakens me from my sleep. “Mmmm ’ello,”I say sleepily into the phone. “Happy Birthday, my Love,” my mother’s voice rings sweetly through the phone like a song. “Do you feel any different?” She asks and my heart sinks with her words. “No mother,” I cannot hide the exasperation from my voice. “I am still powerless.” The memory fades and another comes into my field of vision. “No, Ella,” My uncles voice screams at me in frustration. “You aren’t paying attention. Again.” Taking a defensive stance in the center of the training field. I motion to my Uncle that I am ready. Circling one another I watch intently as he studies my movements. He expects me to be on the defensive but instead I hur
ELLA Dragging my eyes away from the literal Goddess that is standing next to me, I look back at my unconscious body lying on the bed. “I am dying aren’t I,” I whisper to the Moon Goddess.“Not necessarily,” Selene says gently. She guides me over to the chairs in the corner of the suite and gestures for me to sit. “Whether you live, or die is up to you.” “He marked me against my will,” I choke out through silent sobs. “What was it that you said to your wolf before turning yourself over to the coven?” I can feel the Moon Goddess flickering through the memories in my head. “One life to save countless others,” she repeats my words. “Ella, this is what you have been doing for years. Why do you think I put you back in those memories? You constantly sacrifice what you want for the good of those around you. Your mate was only doing the same thing.” My memories flicker back to my time in the coven, and I remember how they refused to let me go because Erebus hadn’t marked me yet.
ELLAI have been awake for three days and it has been three days of listening to my father and Erebus bicker over my wellbeing. Erebus insists that I stay locked in my room because I need rest. My father is sure that fresh air and letting Lily out for a run is the best thing for me. I just sit between the two of them and listen to them fight. Most days I zone out and think about the mark that I now have on my neck. I was certain that Erebus would have regretted his decision by now but every morning I awake to fresh flowers from the greenhouse in my bedroom. Each day a different flower and color. Not to be outdone, my father makes my breakfast every morning and brings it to my room himself. Every morning it is absolutely awful, but I don’t have the heart to tell him.“It looks like you will be getting your wish, Alpha,” Erebus says as he storms into my bedroom. My father shoots a deathly glare over his shoulder. I think he has forgotten that Erebus is more than just my mate,
ELLA “I told you,” Erebus growls at me. “Queens do not play video games.” “And I told you that I am not Queen material,” I grunt as my stomach hits his shoulder with each step he takes. Erebus kicks the door to his suite open and I growl loudly next to his ear, “I am not staying in this room.” “You will stay here until you can be trusted to act like a Queen,” Erebus growls lowly as he flings me on his bed. “I am not some doll for you to dress up and make what you want,” I scream at him. “It was just video games for fucks sake. It is not like I am out doing drugs.” “Like when I caught you smoking weed the first time we met,” Erebus places his hands on his hips and looks like he is trying to scold a child. “Last I checked it is legal for me to do so in this state,” I yell back at him. “But that it is irrelevant because I haven’t smoked since I was forced to move into this Goddess forsaken hell hole you call a home.” “I saved your life by bringing you into this hell hole,”
ELLA His lips crash down on my own in an instant, taking my breath away. But his lips soften against mine as his tongue explores my mouth. Unlike the urgent, needy kisses that have come before this one, this kiss is soft and delicate, like he wants to take his time. His tongue brushes up against my own before he takes my bottom lip in his mouth giving it a gentle tug with his teeth. The metallic taste of my blood fills my mouth before Erebus licks my bottom lip and seals the bite with his saliva. Placing a hand on my shoulder Erebus gently pushes my back against the bed. My head hits the pillow, and he deepens the kiss causing me to moan into his mouth. Grinding himself between my legs I can feel his erection pressing against my stomach. My hips involuntarily rise to meet his own as we find a rhythm together while our lips are still locked on one another. Breaking away from the kiss I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him in closely. Erebus takes the opportunity to nip
EREBUS I am watching proudly as my father negotiates with the clan of hunters that have been killing off our kind for more than fifty years. “You can’t continue to kill innocent wolves and lycans within our city limits,” my father’s voice rings out loudly through the conference hall. Murmurs of objections fill the hall as the clan debates among themselves. “We are no longer the creatures that we once were,” my father tries to speak over the murmurs, but it is useless. “We haven’t turned a human without their consent in more than a thousand years. Be reasonable.” But this clan of hunters is less than reasonable. The sound of a shot gun shucking fills the hall and the lycan guards shift immediately. Standing on my chair I try to see who has the gun, but chaos has consumed the conference hall. Four hunters are trying to subdue my father, who is still in human form. They are slashing the air around him with silver blades, but he is too quick and dodges every blade aimed at him.
ELLA My fingers skim through the array of new clothes that Erebus had bought for me, so I look more like a Queen. The closet is filled with pantsuits, business casual dresses, and long shimmering evening gowns. I wrinkle my nose at all of the options. None of them are my style at all, but today is the first day of training with Talia and I don’t want to disappoint Erebus. An emerald, green dress with long sleeves and a scooped neckline catches my attention. It is perfect. Slipping the dress over my head it hugs all of my curves nicely but not too tightly and my ample cleavage is barely visible at the top of the neckline. It falls just above my knees with a little flare. I pull back the front of my hair in a simple braid letting the rest fall neatly over my shoulders. Luckily all of the purple hair dye has washed out and only my dark waves remain. Giving myself a little turn in the mirror I am satisfied that my runes are perfectly covered. As I walk into the dinning hall
