I stepped back into the bar after a quick smoke outside, the hazy air and low music hitting me all at once. My eyes landed on Carl and Derrick talking in the corner. At first I thought they were having another one of their usual arguments, but then Derrick put his hands on Carl’s shoulders, and Carl… he was smiling. Actually smiling.
