Cindy's POV

The wedding reception ended on an awkward note. Blake's words still hung in the air like smoke that would not clear. Guests kept whispering about the confrontation, their voices low but their eyes loud with curiosity.

I saw them looking at me and Mum, and I wanted to disappear into the floor. Blake did not stay. He left alone without saying one nice word to his father. He just walked out with that cold face, like none of us mattered enough for him to stay.

I kept asking myself why his words had cut so deep.

Victor came over to us. He looked tired, older somehow than he had looked an hour ago.

"I am sorry, Elena. Sorry, Cindy. Blake has struggled a lot since he lost his mother. Please be patient with him. He will come around in time."

Mum nodded but I could see the worry in her eyes. I tried to smile for her sake. But inside I felt uneasy, like a stone had settled in my stomach and would not move. Blake's hard stare from earlier would not leave my mind. I told myself it did not matter what one angry man thought of us. But some quiet part of me did not believe that at all.

That evening, Victor drove us to the Knight Mansion. I stared out the car window the whole way, watching the city lights turn into dark trees and long empty roads.

My whole life had changed in one single day, and I was not sure yet if that was a good thing or a frightening one.

When the big iron gates opened, I could not believe my eyes. The mansion was huge. It looked like a palace with tall walls, green gardens, and bright lights glowing from every window. Many servants waited outside to help us with our things.

"This is your home now," Victor said with pride. He held Mum's hand gently.

"You both deserve this beautiful life."

Mum's eyes filled with tears. "I never imagined living in a place like this," she said softly.

She hugged me tight, and I hugged her back just as tight. I was happy for her. I truly was. But standing there in front of all that stone and glass, I felt smaller than I had ever felt in my life. This was not my world. I did not know if it ever could be.

Inside, the mansion was even more shocking. Shiny marble floors covered every hall, so clean I could almost see my own face in them. Big paintings hung on the walls in golden frames.

Cryst lights hung from ceilings so high I had to tilt my head back just to see them properly. Servants moved quietly around us like they were part of the furniture, trained not to be noticed. I followed a kind maid down a long hallway to my new bedroom.

When she opened the door, my mouth fell open. The room was larger than our old apartment, maybe even bigger than our old apartment and the hallway outside it combined.

It had a huge soft bed piled with pillows, a big wardrobe carved from dark wood, pretty curtains that touched the floor, and my very own bathroom.

Everything looked expensive and perfect, like something from a magazine Mum used to look at in the waiting room of the clinic we could never afford to visit properly.

I closed the door once the maid left and stood there for a long moment, just looking at everything. Then I unpacked my few clothes. Just some old jeans, a couple of T-shirts, and one plain dress.

They looked strange hanging inside that giant wardrobe, like weeds planted in a garden full of roses. I sat on the bed and made a quiet promise to myself.

I would not let the money or this luxury change who I was. I was still the same Cindy who used to walk two miles to save bus fare. I would not forget that girl, no matter how soft this new bed felt beneath me.

Victor wanted us to eat dinner together as a family that very first night.

"We need to start this the right way," he said, and I could hear how much he wanted this to work, how much hope he had folded into those simple words.

We sat at a long table in the big dining room, the kind of table that seemed built for twenty people instead of four. The food smelled wonderful, rich and warm, but the air around us felt heavy, like something waiting to happen.

Blake came late. He wore casual clothes, a simple black shirt and pants, but he still looked strong and impossible to ignore. He walked past Mum without a single glance, like she was invisible to him.

Instead, he pulled out the chair right across from me and sat down without a word. He kept watching me during the whole dinner. His dark eyes stayed fixed on me, unreadable, heavy, impossible to escape.

I tried to eat but I felt very uncomfortable under that stare. Every time I looked up, his gaze was already there waiting for me. My face grew warm.

Why did he stare at me so much? What was he looking for in my face that made him so angry and so focused all at once?

Victor tried to make peace between us.

"Blake, why don't you welcome your new family? Elena and Cindy are part of us now."

Blake gave a cold smile that never reached his eyes.

"Family? I only see strangers living in my mother's house."

Silence filled the dining room like water filling a glass. Mum looked hurt. Her face went pale, and I felt something hot rise up inside my chest.

I could not stay quiet anymore.

"Please, Blake," I said, trying to keep my voice steady and polite.

"Do not blame my mother. She had nothing to do with your mother's death. She only wants to make your father a happy man."

Blake's eyes darkened. His jaw tightened. For just a moment, something unreadable crossed his face before it vanished behind that same wall of ice he seemed to wear like armor.

"Never tell me how to feel, Cindy," he warned. "You know nothing about me or this family."

His voice was low and sharp, and the tension in the room made it hard to even breathe properly. I looked down at my plate and wondered how one dinner could feel so much like a battlefield.

After dinner, I needed to be alone. I went out to the big garden behind the mansion. The night air was cool against my skin. Flowers smelled sweet around a large stone fountain, and for a moment I let myself forget everything and just breathe. I sat on the edge of the fountain and tried to calm my racing heart.

I kept thinking about his words, about the way he looked at me like I was something he could not decide whether to hate or to want.

Footsteps sounded behind me on the stone path. Blake had followed me. He cornered me beside the fountain, his tall body blocking my way like a wall I could not climb over. He stood close, closer than I expected, close enough that I could feel the warmth coming off him in the cool night air.

"You and your mother will never replace my mother," he said. His voice was hard. that sounded almost like pain hiding behind anger.

"If you think you are going to enjoy living in my house, you are mistaken. I will make sure of that."

I felt scared, my hands trembling slightly at my sides, but I gathered my courage and looked straight at him anyway. I refused to let him see me shrink.

"I never asked to become part of your family," I said. "I only want my mother to be happy. Why can't you understand that?"

Blake stepped even closer until we were barely inches apart. My heart pounded so loudly I was sure he could hear it. He slowly lifted his hand and tucked a loose strand of my hair behind my ear.

His fingers brushed my skin lightly, and my whole body went still, caught somewhere between fear and something else I did not want to name.

Blake's jaw clenched, like he was angry with himself for what he had just done. His fingers curled into a fist at his side. For one heartbeat, it looked as though he wanted to reach for me again. Instead, he took a slow step back, putting distance between us like he needed it to breathe.

"Stay away from me, Cindy," he said, his voice rougher than before.

"Because if you don't, one day I'll forget you're my stepsister."

He looked at me for one long moment, and in that moment I felt like he was seeing straight through every wall I had ever built. Then he turned and walked away without another word, leaving me standing there with my heart still racing.

I stood by the fountain long after his footsteps had faded, touching the spot where his fingers had been like it might still be warm. My legs felt weak beneath me.

I had entered the Knight family hoping to find a home, a safe place for Mum and me to finally rest after years of struggle. Instead, I had walked straight into the path of the one man who could destroy everything I had, including, I feared, my own heart.

  • Ruin Me Stepbrother    Between Love and Loyalty

Cindy's POV The mansion returned to its normal quiet after the charity dinner. I noticed Mom watching me more often than before. Every time Blake and I crossed paths, even just to say good morning, it felt dangerous. One wrong look and everything could fall apart.Mom invited me out for coffee that afternoon. She wanted time alone with me. We sat at a small café near the city center. She talked about how happy she was that we finally had a stable home."I spent so many years worrying about money and moving. Now I can finally breathe.""You deserve that peace, Mom," I said."I do." She wrapped both hands around her cup. "Do you remember the apartment on Fifth Street? The one with the leaking ceiling?""How could I forget. You put a bucket under it and named it Gerald."She laughed, really laughed, and for a moment she looked younger. "Gerald served us well. But I do not miss those days. I do not miss watching you go without things because I could not afford them.""You never let me fe

The charity dinner preparations were almost finished. Mom asked me to help her set the long dining table. We stood side by side placing silverware and folding napkins."You have been smiling a lot more lately," Mom said casually while arranging the plates. "Is there something or someone making you happy?"I almost dropped a fork. "No. I am just happy you are happy. That is all."She laughed softly. "All right. Keep your secrets then." We talked about growing up, about how she always wanted me to find someone who treated me well."You deserve someone steady," she said, smoothing a napkin flat. "Someone who notices you. Not someone who just tolerates you.""I know, Mom.""I mean it. After everything with your father, I promised myself I would not let you settle for less than that." She glanced at me sideways. "You would tell me, would you not? If there was someone."I changed the subject as fast as I could, asking her about the flowers for the centerpiece instead. She let it go, but I f

  • Ruin Me Stepbrother    A Dangerous Secret

Cindy's POV I was helping Mom decorate the mansion for the upcoming charity dinner, arranging ribbons along the staircase railing and tucking white lilies into vases that lined the entryway, when Blake walked through the living room. He wore a fitted black shirt that made his shoulders look even broader than usual, and for a moment I forgot what I was doing entirely. Our eyes met across the room. I felt my cheeks warm instantly, a heat that had nothing to do with the afternoon sun coming through the tall windows. He is not even trying to hide it anymore, I thought. Neither am I, apparently.Blake's gaze lingered on me a second too long before he looked away, and I found myself gripping the stem of a flower a little too hard. Servants moved around us carrying trays and folding chairs, weaving between the two of us like we were just another piece of furniture in their way, so neither of us could say anything. We just stood there, caught in that small silent moment, until it passed a

  • Ruin Me Stepbrother    Too Close to stay away

Cindy's POV I woke up feeling anxious, the kind of anxious that sits low in the stomach and refuses to lift. The memory of Victor looking up at me on the staircase last night would not leave my mind. Had he seen something in my expression. Something I had not meant to show. Did he suspect what was happening between Blake and me.I kept hearing Blake's words too."You will not be able to hate the right person." What did he mean by that. The sentence circled in my head like a warning I could not quite understand, over and over, until it stopped sounding like words and started sounding like a threat wrapped in something gentler.I went downstairs hoping Blake had already left for the day. But Victor was sitting on the terrace having breakfast alone, a newspaper folded beside his plate, the morning light catching the silver at his temples. He smiled warmly when he saw me. "Cindy, come join me. It is a beautiful morning out here."I sat down across from him, arranging my face into somethi

  • Ruin Me Stepbrother    Morning after the storm

Cindy's POV I woke up after only a few hours of sleep. My mind kept replaying everything that happened in the library. Blake’s hands on me. The way he whispered my name. The warmth of his body against mine. I reached beside me in bed, almost expecting him to be there, before remembering I had returned to my own room. The memory made my chest tight.I saw the threatening note on my nightstand. “Some secrets destroy everyone who uncovers them.” I folded it and hid it inside one of my books on the shelf. My hands were still shaking a little.Downstairs at breakfast I hoped Blake had already left. But he was sitting at the table drinking coffee. Our eyes met. Neither of us knew what to say. The silence felt heavy.Mom noticed the awkwardness. “Is everything okay this morning?” she asked, looking between us.Victor was distracted by work calls. He barely looked up from his phone. Blake excused himself almost immediately. “I have an early meeting,” he said without looking at me. He left th

I could not stop thinking about the moment in the gazebo. Blake’s hand gently cupping my face kept replaying in my mind. The way his eyes looked at me.The way my heart raced. I avoided him all morning, taking different paths around the mansion whenever I heard his footsteps. But we kept accidentally crossing paths anyway. In the hallway. Near the stairs. Each time our eyes met and we both looked away quickly.Mrs. Carter noticed. She found me in the sitting room later and asked quietly, “Is everything alright between you and Mr. Blake? The air feels… different lately.”“Everything is fine,” I said with a small smile. “Thank you for asking.”She did not look convinced but let it go.Victor and Mom both left for separate engagements that afternoon. For the first time the mansion felt truly empty except for Blake and me. Heavy rain started again. The lights flickered and then went out completely. A power outage.I went looking for candles in the old library. The room was already warm. B
