Lachlan Vance's POV

The rain had stopped by the time we reached the Byron Bay cottage, but nothing about the quiet felt like peace. I stood in the doorway, boots sinking into wet grass, staring at a life I didn't recognise. A child's rain boot sat by the mat small, yellow, mud-crusted. Four years of nursing this hatred, of long nights and boardroom brutality meant to burn her out of my head, and it all came apart the second I saw her face.

Kirrily hadn't changed, not really. If anything, the years away had burned off whatever softness I remembered

she stood at the counter like she was guarding something worth dying for. Which, I would learn in the next ten minutes, she was.

And there was the boy.

He sat on the rug, a wooden block forgotten in his fist, staring up at me with eyes I knew too well. Silver-gray. Mine.

My chest caved in.

My son.

"Lachlan." Callan's voice broke through, low and careful, his hand landing on my shoulder. "Breathe. Remember why we're here. She's playing you she used the leak four years ago, and now she's using a kid to do it again." I didn't answer. I couldn't look away from Kirrily, who'd already moved between me and the boy, her whole body a wall. "Get out of my house, Lachlan." Her voice had dropped somewhere low and ugly, somewhere I'd never heard from her before. "You lost the right to be here."

"No right?" I stepped further into the room, boards groaning underfoot. "You've been quietly buying up two per cent of my logistics float through an offshore shell this morning. You've had trading bots bleeding Vance Enterprises for months. And you hid him from me." "I hid him to keep him alive." Her eyes flashed. "I hid him from the man who threw his pregnant wife out into a storm with one suitcase."

"You sold our patents!" The words tore out before I could stop them. "You handed our green energy tech to our competitors. You gutted my company." "I didn't sell anything." Tears broke through, though her jaw stayed locked. "I took the fall for my sister. If you'd spent five minutes reading the actual server logs instead of drowning in your own pride, you'd know who really signed that transfer."

The room went still.

"Kirrily, that's enough." Callan stepped between us, palms raised. "Lachlan, let's step outside. Tempers are too high we'll handle the acquisition through legal"

"Shut up, Callan."

I didn't look at him. I was watching Kirrily's face, and what I saw there wasn't guilt. It was a woman who'd been dragged through hell and was still standing. For four years I'd been certain. Kirrily the traitor. Kirrily who took the money, who wrecked the company my father built. But standing in that small cottage, surrounded by the hum of her trading screens and a terrified, silver-eyed boy gripping her knee, that certainty cracked down the middle. My phone buzzed in my coat. Once. Then again, and again, refusing to stop. I ignored it until Callan checked his own screen. "It's your mother. The private line." I answered without breaking eye contact with Kirrily. "Not now."

"You'll listen to me right now, Lachlan Vance." My mother's voice came through cold and precise the voice she used to close hostile takeovers. She wasn't at the penthouse; I could hear the particular hush of her study at the family estate. "Where are you?"

"Byron Bay. I found her."

A long pause. I could hear paper shifting on her desk, four hundred kilometres away. "I know you found her," Bronte said, and something in her voice had gone to a strange grave in a way I'd never heard. "You're going to turn around, get in the car, and touch nothing in that house." "Mother, she's running Archangel. She's making a run at our subsidiaries". "She isn't making a run at anything, you fool." Her whisper turned sharp enough to cut. "She's exercising her legal right as your primary estate beneficiary."

I froze. "The divorce was finalised four years ago. I signed the papers the morning after she left." "You signed them," Bronte said, and I could hear the weight dragging at every word. "But I never filed them with the High Court." The floor seemed to drop out from under me.

"What?"

"I put the decree under a permanent matriarchal stay," she said. "I knew the leak wasn't her, Lachlan. I knew someone inside your own circle had framed her to strip her of her voting power. If I'd processed that divorce, her legal protection would have disappeared, and whoever did this would have stripped her clean before the year was out." I stood there with the phone against my ear, watching four years of certainty come apart in real time.

Kirrily was still my wife.

Every share she'd bought under Archangel wasn't an attack on the family, it was the family, closing ranks around itself without my knowledge. "Mother." My voice cracked in a way it hadn't since I was a kid. "Who framed her?" "Look behind you, Lachlan." Her voice had never sounded so afraid. "Look at the man standing next to you."

I turned.

Callan stood by the open door, one hand tucked inside his coat. The easy, familiar smile was gone. Behind his glasses, his eyes were flat the eyes of a stranger wearing my best friend's face.

And in his hand, sliding free of his pocket, was something small, dark, and metal, aimed low, toward the rug where Toby sat.

Lachlan POVKirrily flinched slightly at the word "wife," but she didn't correct me. "I had already tried once. But won't stop until I get what I want.""Then we stop him first," I said, my voice hard as steel. "We use the evidence you've gathered to expose him. We go to the authorities, the board, and the media. We bury him.""It's not that simple," she said. "Callan has allies everywhere. He's spent thirty years building his network. If we move too fast, he'll disappear before we can prove anything.""So we do this carefully then," I said. "Methodically, we will gather irrefutable proof, and then we strike when he least expects it."Kirrily nodded. "That's what I've been trying to do. But I can't do it alone. I need access to the company's internal systems. I need someone on the inside.""You have me," I said. "I can get you access to everything. Financial records, security logs, and email archives. Whatever you need."She looked at me sceptically. "You'd give me access to the compa

Lachlan's POVI couldn't believe that Kirrily had been my backbone all along; she was standing in the shadows, draining her own savings to buy my shares, protecting my throne from the wolves I had invited into my house."No," I choked, my hands flying to my hair as nausea rolled over me. The self-pity burned away, replaced by a white-hot self-loathing that felt like acid in my bones. "No, Kirrily, this can't be real. You wouldn't. After the way I treated you, after I threw you out into the rain.""I didn't do it for you, Lachlan," she said, her voice flat and cold. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't scream. Her calm was worse than any rage. "I did it because my pride wouldn't let strangers ruin what we built. Don't flatter yourself into thinking it was forgiveness.""I hated you," I whispered, the confession tearing from my throat, raw and ugly. I dropped my head into my hands, my shoulders shaking as tears, hot tears, finally broke through. "God help me, Kirrily. Every day I ha

Kirrily's POV"I didn't let them swallow you," I corrected, my voice shaking despite my best efforts." Because my name was tied to your failure. I kept you afloat while you cursed my name in the dark. But that's not why I opened this folder. Look at the transaction logs from the week before the scandal. Follow the routing keys."He leaned in, his shoulder nearly touching mine. His eyes traced the digital trail down to the source. His breath caught. The ledger didn't just show rescue funds. It showed the exact financial path used to plant the fake evidence that destroyed my life. And the trail led straight to someone he trusted with his soul.I watched his face as the realization hit him. It was like watching a man drown in slow motion. The denial came first, that instinctive rejection of a truth too painful to accept. His brow furrowed, his lips parting as if to argue, to explain away what the numbers clearly showed."That can't be right," he muttered, leaning closer to the screen.

The Midnight TruceKirrily's POVThe clock on my dashboard read 2:14 AM as I steered down the ramp into the underground parking structure of a neutral office building downtown.Lachlan had reached out to meet up with me.I cut the engine and sat in the dark for a moment, regulating my breathing, preparing myself. Then I opened the door and stepped out. My heels echoed off the concrete pillars. From the shadows near the support columns, a tall figure stepped forward into the dim light. He looked older. The lines around his eyes were deeper and harder than they had been four years ago. But the intensity in his gaze was unchanged. He wore a heavy black coat, unbuttoned, looking every bit the corporate warlord, but without the arrogant armour that had once defined him.We got into the officeThe quiet in the small office felt heavier than the storm lashing against the windows. I didn't look at him right away. My fingers hovered over the keyboard of my laptop, the blue light casting sharp

The AwakeningLachlan's POVAcross the city, in the dim executive suite of the Vance Group headquarters, I stared at the computer monitors on my desk. My hands pressed flat against the wood, supporting my weight as if my legs might give out.The corporate archives had completed an automated update, cross-referencing legacy family filings with federal registry changes. A notification blinked in the center of the screen, refusing to be dismissed: MARITAL STATUS: ACTIVE. PRIMARY SPOUSE: KIRRILY VANCE.My eyes blurred.Still married? The words echoed through my mind like a physical blow. All these years, I had lived with the ghost of a failed marriage, carrying the guilt of broken vows, believing I had signed away the only real thing in my chaotic life. I remembered the night I signed those papers. The cheap whiskey. The blinding rage. The lies fed to me by senior executives who were now trying to take over my company.I hadn't thrown her away. I had been played, and so had she, by trait

Kirrily's POVThe revelation hung in the air like ozone after a lightning strike."If you and Lachlan had split cleanly, your shared assets would have been exposed in public courts. I knew you were framed. I didn't have proof at the moment of your exile, but I knew the timing was too convenient to be organic.""How?" I asked. "How could you possibly know?""Because I've spent forty years reading people," Bronte said. "And because the evidence against you was too perfect. Too clean. Real corporate espionage leaves loose ends, mistakes, and traces. The dossier Callan presented to Lachlan was flawless. Every account, every transaction, every digital footprint aligned perfectly. That's not how real crimes work. That's how fabricated ones work."I stared at her, stunned. "You suspected Callan from the beginning?""I suspected everyone," Bronte corrected. "Callan. The board members. Even Lachlan's closest advisors. But I couldn't move against them without proof. So I did what I could. I sta
