Chapter 4

Autor: Washing Wheat
My apology message hit the company group chat like a grenade.

On the surface, it sounded polite, but it was obvious how disappointed I was in the company. After that, I revoked all my access permissions from the company systems and began my suspension period.

Emily moved me to a desk beside the restroom under the pretense that I should stay in my lane. I spent my days there, a spectacle for everyone passing by, subjected to a mix of mocking glares and pitying looks.

Meanwhile, Jessica proudly took over my old office seat and started bossing everyone around in the department.

However, my role was far more complex than she realized.

I had personally managed every project assigned to me from its inception to its conclusion, mastering every intricate detail of planning and execution.

Jessica, meanwhile, knew absolutely nothing.

Within days, over a dozen clients filed complaints demanding that their accounts be returned to my management. They threatened to scrap their contracts entirely, leaving Horizon Ventures on the brink of staggering financial penalties.

Emily finally panicked. For the first time in days, she came over to my desk.

"Everly, these projects were originally yours. There are some technical issues right now, so I need you to coordinate with the clients and smooth things over."

I looked up at her casually. "Ms. Hopkins, are you sure you’ve got the right person? I’m suspended."

She stiffened for a second before replying awkwardly, "Suspension doesn’t mean you stop working. Company policy is that whoever starts a project sees it through."

I spread my hands lightly. "That’s going to be difficult. I already removed all my system access."

Her expression changed instantly, her eyes blazing with anger. "You were suspended, not terminated. Why would you revoke your permissions? Submit a request to restore them immediately."

I looked at her calmly. "Weren’t those your words, Ms. Hopkins? 'Stay in your lane'. I’m just following your instructions."

Her face darkened in embarrassment, but she still forced herself to stay patient. "Fine. We’ll restore your position first. Just contact the clients and stop them from canceling their contracts."

I smiled faintly, tilting my head slightly. "Shouldn’t the more capable Top Performer handle this kind of thing? I’m just a woman who relies on her looks, remember? I don’t have that kind of ability."

Crimson flooded her face as she fought to hold back her anger. "Everly, that was just office banter. Are you really taking it this seriously?"

I kept smiling, but there wasn’t a trace of warmth left in it. "So, taking away my Top Performer title and $600,000 bonus was office banter, too? And calling a $10 slice of cake excessive spending was also just a joke?"

Every sentence landed squarely across her face. Her complexion shifted rapidly, flushing a deep crimson before draining to a deathly pale color.

Silence stretched between us as she remained speechless. For a person of Emily's stature, offering an apology to a mere employee was an alien concept.

Just then, Jessica came running over excitedly. "Ms. Hopkins! Zenith Consortium agreed to the investment!"

Emily’s eyes lit up instantly. "That’s great!"

She looked at Jessica like she’d personally saved the company. "Jessica, you really are Horizon Ventures’ lucky charm. With Zenith Consortium backing us, clients will be lining up to work with us."

Then she turned toward me and shot me a vicious glare. "Everly, you’re fired. Go process your exit paperwork immediately."

I nodded calmly. "Fine. Then I expect the company to compensate me according to labor regulations."

Emily exploded instantly. "Compensation? After the losses you caused this company?" she shouted furiously. "Just wait until we sue you!"

Jessica looked at me viciously from beside him. "Everly, I’ll make sure the entire industry blacklists you."

I merely smiled faintly. "Sure, I’ll wait."

I quietly packed up my things and walked out of the company I’d poured myself into for the past year. I hadn’t relied on connections or family influence to get where I was.

Everything Horizon Ventures had become today was built with my own hard work and merit.

As Emily spoke, she immediately transferred the $600,000 bonus back to me in front of everyone.I looked at the transfer notification on my phone and almost laughed. Even now, after all this chaos, she was still thinking about Zenith Consortium’s investment. I was genuinely curious to know just how shameless she was.I looked up at her calmly. "Ms. Hopkins, do you really think I came here today because of $600,000?"Emily froze. Then she forced out an awkward smile. "Wasn’t... wasn’t that the reason?"Before I could answer, Uncle Royce spoke first, "Of course not. Everly owns a 20% stake in Zenith Consortium, which pays out hundreds of millions in dividends annually. As the sole heiress, the Osbornes' $10-billion fortune is entirely hers. $600,000? That's not even ten times her monthly allowance. Do you think she'd care about your measly $600,000?"Emily’s face flushed crimson. Regret hit her so hard she practically wanted to slap herself. How had she been stupid enough to drive a

"But you, Wendy… You kept pretending to be innocent and helpless. Uncle Royce pitied you, so he wrote you that recommendation letter. That day, he only brought you to Horizon Ventures because he wanted to give you a chance, but you turned around and used all of that to scam people."Wendy's face grew paler and paler until there wasn’t a trace of color left. "I... I really did see Mr. Osborne as a father figure. I've admired him since I was little. I wasn’t lying. Dad—" She caught herself immediately. "N-No, Mr. Osborne... Please believe me. I really wanted to be your daughter."Uncle Royce looked at her with open disgust. "If Everly hadn’t told me, I would never have known you were flaunting my name and throwing your weight around. If you truly needed help, the Osbornes were never going to deny you a meal. I would’ve even helped support your future if you’d asked properly."But instead, you chose to bully my beloved niece! You’ve completely disappointed me, Wendy. What you’ve done

"Mr. Osborne, we only offended your daughter to protect her reputation. Please spare us, considering our good intentions."More and more people bowed to me in apology, not because they truly recognized their mistakes, but because they were intimidated by the Osborne family’s power. After all, as the wealthiest family in the city, the Osbornes could ruin these so-called aristocratic clans with a mere flick of the wrist.Uncle Royce’s gaze shifted to Jessica. Cold sweat poured down her face, and her whole body trembled uncontrollably. She cowered in fear, her neck drawn in, and called out weakly, "Dad…"There was not a shred of warmth in Uncle Royce’s eyes as he stared straight at her. "Wendy, didn’t I tell you never to call me ‘Dad’? Have you forgotten what happened to those people?"Jessica jerked her head up, the blood draining from her face in an instant. She shook her head frantically. "No, Dad… Mr. Osborne, I just love you so much. I didn’t mean anything by it. I only ever want

Jessica pulled out her phone again and showed everyone several more photos. However, none of them were private pictures of her alone with Uncle Royce. Every photo was either taken in a group setting or at public events.Still, she lifted her chin confidently. "These were taken when my father and I visited orphanages for charity work. Isn’t that enough proof that I’m his daughter?"Someone in the crowd immediately chimed in, "Mr. Osborne really is passionate about charity. I heard he’s sponsored a lot of underprivileged students. Based on that, Jessica really might be his daughter."Jessica shot me a smug, provocative smile. "Everly, you’re not beating me today. This contract is getting signed."Then she turned toward Emily impatiently. "What are we waiting for? Hurry up and sign it."As she spoke, she grabbed Emily’s arm and started dragging her toward the signing table."Hold on." My voice cut through the room icily.I stepped forward and blocked her path. Then I looked at her

The two of them, playing off each other, immediately labeled me as a morally loose woman. The whispers around me grew increasingly unbearable."She looks like such a nice, honest young woman. How could she do something so deceitful?""I remember her. She’s the one who landed our company’s project. She’s quite the schemer. She had our director completely wrapped around her finger and even gave us a 3% discount on her own.""Women these days are all about taking shortcuts. She’s certainly pretty, and she sure knows how to use her connections.""Pfft! That’s just a nice way of saying she makes money that way. How could a major signing event at Zenith Consortium’s even allow someone like her in?"Jessica looked at me smugly, her disdain growing. "Everly, did you hear that? Get out of here right now. Don’t taint Zenith Consortium with your presence. A person of your status isn't even worthy of breathing the same air as my father, yet you have the audacity to pose as my cousin and forg

The room fell into a deathly silence, with everyone's gaze shifting between Jessica and me."She says Mr. Osborne is her uncle. Then she and Mr. Osborne’s daughter should be cousins. How could they not know each other?""One of them has to be lying. A contract signing turned into a showdown on who's the real heiress. What a spectacle."Jessica’s face went instantly pale, panic flickering through her eyes. "Impossible! She’s lying. My cousin has always lived overseas. If she came back, there’s no way I wouldn’t know."And besides, my father is an Osborne. How could his maternal niece be an Osborne too?"I scoffed coldly. "Can't I take my mother’s maiden name? My mom had a difficult delivery when she gave birth to me. Everyone knows that my father adored my mother above all else. He underwent a vasectomy and insisted that I take my mother's maiden name despite being their only child. It's no secret."If you’re really Uncle Royce’s daughter, how could you not know that?"Jessica’s
