He didn’t apologise.

That was the first thing.

He looked at me across the quiet of the car park and waited for whatever I was going to lead with, and when I didn’t speak immediately he said, simply and without preamble:

“I didn’t want to share your attention tonight.”

I stared at him.

“That’s your reason,” I said.

“Yes.”

“You cancelled on her. She called me in the middle of dinner, Damian. She’d gotten dressed. She was trying very hard not to make it a big deal and doing a poor job of it.

Six weeks later, my internship ended. They offered me a full role. My own accounts. Andre's recommendation carried more weight than I probably deserved, though he'd never let me say that out loud without arguing.I accepted before I let myself overthink it.I told Damian first. That was its own kind of answer, about where things actually stood, and we both knew it without either of us saying so directly."Good," he said, when I told him over the phone."That's it? Good?""I knew you would.""You always think you know.""I'm usually right.""Don't."He almost smiled. I could hear it in his voice even without seeing his face.---Chloe and I got coffee on a Tuesday morning, the way we used to, back before any of this. For stretches of it, it felt almost normal. Not the normal of before, the one built on something hidden underneath every ordinary conversation we'd ever had. A new normal. More honest. Slightly more fragile. For exactly that reason, more real than the old one had ever mana

  • Ruined by My Best Friend’s Father   Chapter 59 — The House

I'd been to this house hundreds of times. I knew the particular sound the gate made when it swung open, the smell of the front hallway, the way the kitchen light fell across the counter at this exact hour of the evening.Tonight felt different anyway. There was no cover story tonight. No calculation about which car to park where, no mental script for what I'd say if someone asked why I was here. Just the ordinary act of walking up to a door I'd walked up to a hundred times before, except this time with nothing to hide.I rang the doorbell.Damian answered. He looked at me for a moment, something steady and quiet in his face, and stepped aside to let me in.I walked in.Chloe was in the living room, curled into the corner of the couch with a book she wasn't really reading. She looked up when I walked in.Something passed between us. Not comfortable, not yet. But honest. Acknowledged, in a way that didn't need words attached to it."There's food," she said, "if you're staying.""I'm sta

  • Ruined by My Best Friend’s Father   Chapter 58 — What Comes Next

Three weeks after the café.Things weren't fixed. But they were moving, in the particular way things move when the worst of a crisis has passed and what's left is the slower work of rebuilding something that will never look exactly like it did before, and might, in time, look like something better instead.Chloe and I were talking again. Carefully. More honestly than we'd ever managed even before any of this started, because the pretending was gone now, and there was a strange relief in that, even inside all the difficulty. Chloe and Damian were finding their way back to each other more slowly, that wound clearly running deeper than anything between her and me, the particular kind of damage that only heals on its own timeline regardless of how much anyone wants to rush it. And Damian and I weren't hiding anymore. No announcement, no formal declaration to anyone. We simply existed, openly, and let the people around us adjust in their own time.Chloe and I had lunch on a Tuesday. Real l

  • Ruined by My Best Friend’s Father   Chapter 57 — Damian Fights for It

Damian showed up at my building on a Saturday, unannounced, midday, ordinary daylight instead of the careful evenings he usually preferred.I opened the door and he was just standing there, hands in his pockets, nothing arranged in advance, nothing decided before he'd said a word to me."This is new," I said. "You, showing up without texting first.""I'm trying it out.""How's it feel?""Uncomfortable. I don't like arriving somewhere without knowing if I'm welcome.""You're welcome.""Good. I was fairly certain, but it's nice to have it confirmed.""I want to take you somewhere," he said. "If you'll come.""Where?""You'll see.""That's not an answer.""It's the only one I've got today." A faint, unguarded smile. "Come with me anyway.""Give me two minutes.""Take three. I'm not in a hurry."I got my coat, grabbed my keys off the counter, and found him waiting exactly where I'd left him, patient in a way that still felt slightly unfamiliar on him.---He drove without saying much, one

  • Ruined by My Best Friend’s Father   Chapter 56 — The Room

Chloe came in and sat on my couch, and for a while neither of us said anything. The silence was different from the silence at the café. That one had been a before, still holding its breath, waiting to see what would break it. This one was something else. Quieter. Already broken and sitting in the wreckage together instead of across a table from it."Do you want tea?" I asked, because it was the only thing I could think to offer."No." She looked around the room slowly, like she was recalibrating something. "I just wanted to sit here for a minute.""Okay.""You've barely changed anything in here since the last time I visited.""I haven't had much reason to.""That plant's still alive. I'm shocked. You've killed every plant you've ever owned, as far as I know.""This one's stubborn. It refuses to die out of spite, I think. Though I still forget to water it half the time.""You forget to water everything. It's a miracle you've kept yourself alive this long." A small, involuntary almost-s

  • Ruined by My Best Friend’s Father   Chapter 55 — Eva at the Bottom

Damian called on Sunday evening, three days after his visit to Chloe."How did it go," I asked."She set terms. I agreed to them.""What terms?""I'm not going to tell you the specifics. I promised her this part stays between the two of us." His voice was careful, deliberate, a man keeping a promise he'd clearly had to work to make himself keep. "I can tell you she's not ready to forgive either of us. I can tell you she asked me to give you space to find your own way back to her, without me arranging it.""That sounds like her.""It does." A pause. "She also told me I learned nothing except by watching myself get things wrong.""She's not entirely inaccurate.""No," he said. "She isn't."I sat with the phone against my ear a moment longer. "Thank you for telling me what you could.""I meant what I told her. I'm keeping my word on this one.""I know you are.""How are you holding up? Actually.""I don't know yet. Ask me tomorrow.""I will."We talked another minute, nothing important,

He just said: "You're not jealous. I hear you."The words hung between them, not like weapons but like bridges. Eva remained still in his arms, the warmth of his body seeping through the thin fabric of her dress. She didn't pull away. He didn't release her. The silence tha
