Chapter 1

Penulis: M'ay
The moment I sent the message, every group chat blew up. People began speculating about why I had suddenly called off the wedding. After all, everyone knew how much it meant to me.

Before long, my parents called. Mom's voice carried a trace of confusion and worry as she asked, "Nat, what's going on? Why did you suddenly call off the wedding? Did something happen?"

I thought I had already grown numb, but the moment I heard my parents' voices, tears still welled up in my eyes.

For my wedding, they had spent most of the savings they'd built over a lifetime. By most people's standards, the wedding I had planned for my fiancee, Olivia Smith, was already impressive.

But she had expensive tastes and wanted everything to be the best. She demanded an extravagant reception, a custom-made wedding gown, and a diamond ring designed just for her.

As someone at the very start of my career, the pressure was almost too much.

Yet, Mom and Dad could see how much I loved Olivia. Without hesitation, they handed me the money, saying, "As long as you're happy, we'll do whatever we can to support you."

I knew that was the savings they had scraped together over a lifetime of living frugally.

The line went quiet for a few seconds. I didn't know how to begin.

Was I supposed to tell them that I couldn't even reach Olivia and that I had just seen a photo of her with another man on the day before our wedding?

I couldn't bring myself to say it. So, I claimed the signal was bad and hung up.

As it turned out, canceling a wedding was far easier than planning one. The wedding I had spent a whole year preparing was called off in just one morning.

Yet in all that time, I never received a single call from Olivia.

Part of me had imagined that if she could just give me a reasonable explanation, then maybe we could still make things work.

Sometimes, I couldn't help mocking myself. If being a lovesick fool were a competition, I'd probably be the undisputed champion.

Then, I saw another Instagram post by Olivia's childhood friend, Aiden Jones. In the photo, Olivia had her eyes closed, sleeping soundly.

The caption read, "This sleepyhead has something important to do today, but she's sleeping so peacefully. I didn't have the heart to wake her."

I clenched my fists, unable to suppress the surge of anger rising inside me.

This time, I knew Olivia and I had no future together.

The first time I met her was at the university's anniversary event. She had given a speech as the student representative for the freshman class—confident, articulate, and completely at ease.

It hadn't taken long before Olivia caught my attention. At the time, I silently swore I would win her over.

So, I began doing everything I could to get close to her. I learned about her interests and found ways to bump into her.

Every morning, I bought her breakfast and walked her to class. In the afternoon, I brought her coffee and accompanied her to the library. At night, I brought her late-night snacks and walked her back to her dorm.

Olivia never turned me down and always accepted everything I gave her with a smile and a polite thank you. I thought my sincerity had moved her and that she felt the same way about me.

Then came the day I finally gathered the courage to confess to her. I placed the carefully prepared gift in front of her and laid all my feelings bare.

However, Olivia smiled faintly and said, "I'm sorry. You're a great guy, but I already have a boyfriend."

Worse still, her boyfriend was a well-known, wealthy heir on campus.

At that moment, my heart sank, and I chose to walk away. I knew I wasn't good enough for her. After all, I came from an ordinary family.

I was sure someone like Olivia would never truly fall for me.

With that, I stopped thinking about relationships and threw myself into my studies and research.

By the time graduation approached, I had finally achieved some success. Our team won first prize in a research competition.

We took home a decent cash prize, and I secured a promising job. Moreover, my reputation on campus was beginning to grow.

On graduation day, our program hosted a party. And that was when I saw Olivia again, six months after we had last seen each other.

Even though we attended the same university, we hardly ever crossed paths.

Olivia's rage flared. She lunged at Aiden and clamped both hands around his throat. At first, he tried to defend himself. But as her grip tightened, he suddenly lashed out and kicked her to the ground, hurling vicious insults at her."Bitch! Did you really think I loved you? You were nothing but a pawn! And I'll tell you this. I'm not just selling the baby. I'll sell you along with it!"I only bothered pretending because you could give me some money. Now that you've got nothing left, why the hell would I keep playing along?"His words completely shocked the people around us. In an instant, the crowd turned on him and branded him a scumbag.Olivia's eyes blazed with rage. Out of nowhere, she pulled out a small knife and drove it straight toward Aiden's chest. Caught off guard, he collapsed into a pool of blood. Everyone else scattered in terror, while Olivia ran out of the hospital in a frenzy. The moment she rushed into traffic, a speeding car slammed into her, sending her fly

Just then, Olivia appeared, clutching a test result. The moment she laid eyes on me, she froze. The paper slipped from her hand and fell to the floor. I glanced down at it, only to realize she was pregnant. My chest clenched sharply. I had thought about having a child with her before, but she had always found some excuse to turn me down. And now, she was pregnant. Guilt flickered in her eyes, but it vanished just as quickly. Then, her voice took on a sharp edge as she spoke. "Nathaniel, what are you doing here? You were the one who said we were done, so why did you come all the way here after me?"She continued, "Could it be that you're not over me yet? Don't bother. I've thought it through and realized that Aiden is the one for me. Stop wasting your time."Olivia was as confident as ever, still seeing me as the lovesick fool I used to be. Since she wanted to be with Aiden, I wasn't about to interfere.Just as I was about to leave, she grabbed my arm. "Nathaniel, you've

With that, I got into the car with Ella, leaving Olivia behind as she sobbed uncontrollably. Through the rearview mirror, I saw the look of sheer anguish on her face.…After that day, I hardly saw Olivia again. It was as if she had vanished entirely. I thought that was the end of whatever tangled mess we had. Then one day, when I went to the hospital for a routine checkup, I spotted a familiar figure. I'd recognize that silhouette anywhere. It was Aiden. He pulled out his phone, a smug grin plastered across his face. He was so absorbed in the call that he forgot it was on speaker. Though Aiden was several feet away, I could make out enough from his conversation to piece together the story. His girlfriend was pregnant, but he had racked up massive gambling debts. So, he planned to keep it from her and have her carry the child to term. After that, he'd claim that the baby was stillborn, then sell the child. It sounded like something straight out of a soap opera. I felt

Everyone in the office knew I was allergic to eggs. Yet, my partner of five years had no idea. Olivia's hands froze midair. Then, she turned to Ella, her eyes glinting with malice."Who are you? How do you know about that? I can see through your schemes. Nathaniel is an exceptional man, and any woman would have her eye on him. But don't forget your place," Olivia spat through gritted teeth.Ella was left speechless. People only realized the value of something once it was gone. Hearing Olivia admit that I was exceptional was something rare. Olivia was ready to tear into Ella once more, but I snapped, "Enough, Olivia! We're done. Don't come looking for me again."Disbelief crossed her features for a moment, then her hostility faltered. In the next instant, she stepped forward to take my hand, but I brushed her away."Babe, let's get back together. You've been angry at me for far too long. I promise I won't do anything stupid again," said Olivia.I looked at her, my eyes devoid

After the breakup, I threw myself into work. I had poured so much effort into the wedding that I had let go of several major clients. I got back in touch with them. Fortunately, they still valued my abilities and were willing to work with me again. Moreover, these deals would bring in a considerable income.I had also arranged to sell the apartment I had bought to live in after the wedding. In truth, it had never been the most practical place. It was far from my office, and my daily commute would have taken at least an hour. It wasn't a very cost-effective option. The real reason I bought the apartment was Aiden. Back then, he had briefly worked as a sales agent in that building. It didn't take much for him to persuade Olivia to buy a place there. After asking around, I learned the apartment was nearly 200 thousand dollars more expensive than similar units nearby. However, Olivia was set on buying through Aiden. I had gone along at the time, thinking it was just a favor. An

Having said that, I threw all the luggage in front of Olivia, along with the half-used box of condoms I had found in the bedside drawer. I had never used that brand myself. As for who had, I didn't care to find out. When Olivia realized I was serious, a flicker of panic crossed her features. Her hands trembled as she reached for mine, but I avoided her touch. "Babe, what are you doing?" she began. "I was just joking. Don't take it so seriously. If you're upset about what happened yesterday, I'm sorry. Please don't do this to me."As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes, and she wore that same pitiful expression that I had seen countless times before. But this time, I wouldn't give in. "There's no point in apologizing. It's over between us."Olivia's eyes widened in disbelief, and tears streamed down her cheeks. "Nathaniel, we've been together for so many years. How can you be so cruel? It was just a small matter. Are you really going to throw away everything we've shared
