Chapter 3

مؤلف: Flora Johnson
A notification popped up on my phone. It was a message from Ciro. "I'll come pick you up for dinner once I finish dealing with a few things."

He was worried I wouldn't eat properly if he left me on my own. I couldn't help smiling as I read it. Maybe choosing Ciro as my new husband hadn't been such a bad decision after all.

I wouldn't deny that Luca had once loved me sincerely. For ten years, I had believed in that love. But I had learned that even the most sincere feelings could change in an instant.

And Luca's love had never truly belonged to me alone. The moment Rosa came back into his life, I was no longer the person he chose first.

I still remembered one night at a party. I'd had a few drinks and was feeling tipsy, so I slipped away to the bathroom. When I came back, I found Rosa practically hanging off Luca.

"Luca, I want to marry you."

The moment those words left her mouth, the entire private room fell silent. Someone noticed me standing in the doorway and quickly laughed, trying to ease the awkwardness and change the subject.

But I couldn't look away from Luca. I stood there waiting for him to reject her, waiting for him to make it clear that I was the woman he loved.

Instead, he simply said in that same gentle voice, "Rosa's drunk. I'll get her some water. Keep an eye on her for me."

Looking back, I couldn't put into words what I had felt in that moment. I had already compromised and backed down for him so many times that, when I think about it now, I realized I must have been completely blinded by love.

I kept telling myself that he loved me, that Rosa was only someone he felt responsible for, and that eventually, things would go back to the way they were. But they never did.

So now, I was finally ready to let go of a love that had never belonged to me alone.

…

Three days passed in the blink of an eye.

Luca had flown overseas with Rosa for her treatment, and rumors spread throughout our entire circle that I had been abandoned.

Yet somehow, the day before my wedding, the invitations went out as planned. The wedding hadn't been canceled.

The church glittered beneath brilliant lights, packed with guests dressed in their finest clothes. I stood at the altar in a white wedding gown, just as I had always imagined.

The only difference was the groom. Instead of Luca, it would be Ciro.

As the ceremony drew closer, I slowly made my way toward the church entrance. I hadn't even stepped inside when I heard the guests talking.

"Everyone in our circle knows Rosa is in love with Luca. This whole thing was obviously her way of stopping Luca and Isola from getting married."

Another guest chimed in, "She had one nightmare, and Luca immediately flew overseas with her for treatment. That alone tells you how important Rosa is to him."

"I got a call from the Moretti family yesterday saying the wedding was canceled. Then, right after that, I got another call from the Castellano family saying the wedding was still happening."

Someone else shrugged. "Who knows what those two families are playing at?"

"What was supposed to be a perfect alliance has turned into this mess. The Castellano family's dignity has been completely dragged through the mud."

I stood outside and listened to every word. As much as I hated to admit it, they weren't wrong.

Luca had never thought about any of this. Or maybe the truth was even simpler. He had never cared enough to think about it. He would never understand what it felt like to have our wedding postponed for Rosa in front of everyone in our circle, leaving my family and me humiliated and disgraced.

Before the ceremony started, I received a call from Luca.

"Isola, I'm sorry. Today was supposed to be our wedding, but I broke my promise."

My voice was calm. "It's fine. I'm used to it."

Then I hung up.

The moment the call ended, panic began to creep over Luca. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong, that something had changed, and that this time, it might be beyond his control.

He called me again almost immediately. "Isola, are you angry?"

So he knew. He knew I would be angry, yet he had gone ahead and done it anyway.

Maybe it was because, deep down, Luca had always believed I would never leave him. That no matter how badly he hurt me or how many times he broke his promises, I would eventually forgive him.

He believed I would keep loving him, no matter how far he pushed me. After all, in his mind, my love for him had no limit.

I thought everything between Luca and me was finally over and that we'd never cross paths again. But I was wrong. We ran into each other at a party shortly before he was due to leave. Ciro and I had arrived together, but he was busy networking and couldn't stay by my side, so I picked up a glass of champagne and wandered through the ballroom on my own. I was taking in the room when someone suddenly tapped me on the shoulder. I turned and found Luca standing behind me. I hadn't even noticed him approaching. He looked even more haggard than he had the last time I'd seen him. "Isola, I'm leaving tomorrow. I never thought I'd run into you here tonight." I looked at him without feeling much of anything anymore. "Okay. I hope everything goes well for you." Luca's eyes were red, and there was still a trace of longing in his gaze. "Isola, I've spent the past few days thinking about everything. All this time, I was the one who was completely in the wrong. I made you suffer so mu

"Ciro isn't a good man!" Luca shouted. "He plays around with women. There's always been one woman after another around him. Isola, after all these years together, you don't believe that I love you, but you believe him?"I turned and met his eyes, keeping my voice calm and deliberate. "Luca, whether I believe Ciro or not, I will never believe you again."I continued, "Ever since Rosa came into our lives, there hasn't been a single time when you chose me without hesitation. Whenever we both needed you at the same time, I was always the one you left behind. "From the very first gift I gave you to the day we were supposed to get married, I was always the one making concessions. Every single time." I took a slow breath, refusing to let his words shake me. "You left me behind so many times that, eventually, I got used to never being the person someone chose without hesitation. I got used to being the one who was easier to sacrifice. "But Ciro isn't like that. He stands by my side.

I thought I wouldn't have to see Luca again anytime soon, but I was wrong. After picking up groceries at the supermarket, I came home to find him standing outside my door, waiting. The moment he saw me get out of the car, he hesitated, looking awkward and uncertain, as though he wasn't sure whether he should come any closer."Come inside." His face was flushed, and judging by his look, he was probably running a fever. Yet he'd come all the way here anyway. I let out a quiet sigh, unlocked the door, and stepped aside to let him in. Some things still needed to be said between us, and I figured it was better to settle them once and for all. I motioned for Luca to sit and asked one of the maids to bring him a glass of warm water. Once he had settled into the chair, I looked at him with a tired sigh. "You came all the way here to see me. What did you want to say?" I asked. "I… I just wanted to explain a few things." Luca licked his lips, uncertainty creeping into his voice. I

"If you still need time, I can wait. Maybe this marriage began because you were desperate to get away from someone else, but I hope that, from now on, staying by my side will be something you choose because you truly want to." I looked at the man standing in front of me, and my thoughts drifted back to City Hall, where he'd told me it wasn't too late to change my mind. Then I remembered what had happened in the church, how he'd stepped forward without hesitation and protected me, even knowing there could be consequences. For ten years, I'd chased after Luca's shadow, swallowing my hurt and convincing myself to wait just a little longer every time he let me down. I'd spent so long trying to prove that I was worth choosing. And now, for the first time, someone had chosen me without hesitation. The realization settled quietly in my heart. I took a slow step toward Ciro and rested my head against his shoulder. …The next morning, I woke up groggily in our new bed. Still half-asl

Luca stared at Ciro as though he hadn't understood a word he'd said. His brow creased as his gaze darted between Ciro and me. "Isola is my fiancee. We're the ones who are supposed to be getting married."Then he looked at me, and for the first time, I saw panic creeping into his eyes. "Isola, all I said was that we needed to postpone the wedding for a few days. How could you let an outsider turn our wedding into this ridiculous spectacle?" I stepped half a pace out from behind Ciro and met Luca's gaze calmly. "Luca, this isn't a spectacle." I paused, letting my words sink in before continuing. "Ciro and I have gotten our marriage license. Today was supposed to be our wedding day. It just isn't yours and mine."Rosa came stumbling into the church moments later. Her eyes swept over the scene, and a flicker of excitement immediately appeared in them. "Wow, Isola, you really moved on fast. Don't tell me you were already seeing him behind Luca's back." Ciro turned his cold gaze

Because I loved him, and Luca knew it. That was why he had always felt he could hurt me without limits. He was certain that no matter what he did, I would never truly leave. When I stayed silent, Luca assumed I was angry. Strangely, instead of being worried, he seemed relieved. "Isola, don't be mad. Rosa's condition is serious, and the specialist's schedule is extremely tight. It took us forever to get this appointment. If we postpone it again, we might have to wait another year or two. Rosa can't afford to wait that long, so I have no choice but to go with her." A trace of mockery flickered in my eyes. "Is there really no one else in the world who can do this? No caregiver? No assistant? Does it have to be you?" I asked, my voice growing heavier with every word. "Do you even care about my family's dignity?" As he heard my voice begin to crack under the weight of all the questions I had been holding back, Luca seemed completely reassured. To him, my anger was proof that I stil
