Protecting my kids!

CHAPTER 4

FLORA

" Let her in." His deep voice sounded in my ears, and sluggishly, I walked inside as the guards gave way. I could see his dark eyes peering into mine, and my body trembled.

Kelvin and Alex are very stubborn kids, and at times I pity their mother. If not for how she begged me, I would've resigned from being their Nanny, because these kids can get someone into big trouble.

" Good - Good day Sir." I stuttered in fright and looked down immediately, to avoid his gaze. Alex and Kelvin kept pleading, and I wondered if the monstrous looking man would listen.

" What is your name?" His question made me look at him, but I quickly adverted my gaze again.

'' My name is Flora. Flora Jones. Please sir, I understand that you're angry about what happened. Please, temper justice with mercy. They're just kids, they don't know what they're doing. Please forgive them, forgive us.'' I put my hands together and went on my knees, summoning courage to look at his face this time.

That's when I noticed it. His eyes, his nose, his face, almost everything looks like Kelvin and Alex. Many questions slipped into my mind which I needed answers instantly. ''Is he their father? Could this be ma'am Clara's husband? Could It......"

I glanced at Alex and Kelvin to confirm, and truly my eyes weren't deceiving me. Clara had told me that she divorced her husband because he didn't want the kids alive.

Now that we are here now, I couldn't help but to yelp in my heart. Clara was right. This man looks evil! The kids aren't safe, and I really need to take them out of here, but how?

My body shook in fright, and I didn't realize it when I let out a low cry. Tears ran down my cheeks.

" Have we met before?" He asked and I shook my head vividly. I was about to respond, but gulped down when I felt a lump in my throat.

His eyes darted at the kids and my heart skipped a beat.

" Please Sir, spare us." I blurted out, and he turned his gaze to me again. He heaved a long sigh and leaned back on the chair, staring keenly at the kids.

''Sorry, will not fix the car, madame. Do you know how much—“

“Let them go.” He said, interrupting one of the guards who was speaking. “Release the kids to go to their mother, they are free to go.”

The joy in my heart knew no bounds as Alex and Kelvin ran into my arms after being released by the guards.

''Thank you so much, Sir. Thank you, I really appreciate it.'' I said with a smile and made a curtsy, then grabbed the kid's hands and led them out in a rush.

" Finally." I breathed out in relief as we got outside. I had forgotten about my fears, but not until the kids spoke.

" Aunt, are you alright?" Alex asked and raised his brows at me. I was about to respond, but Kelvin interrupted.

"You look like a piece of paper that's been bleached in the sun."

" Hey! Come on. I don't look like a piece of paper that's been bleached in the sun. Keep shut and let's get out of here. Mommy is waiting.'' I grabbed their hands and dragged them out of the compound, glancing around in fear. Just as I expected, ma'am Clara was waiting for us outside the supermarket. I carried Alex on my back, and held Kelvin's hand while I tried to cross the road.

" Mommy!" The two kids screamed happily as soon as they saw their mother and hurried up to her. Clara opened her arms and received them with a smile on her face.

'' Where did you go to? You got Mommy worried.'' She asked, and they made a sad face and glanced at me.

'' Why are your eyes red? Did you cause trouble again?'' She asked further, and with the look on her face, I could tell that she was scared.

'' You caused another problem, I know it. I felt it. Am I right, Flora?'' She looked up at me and I nodded my head slightly, with my lips pressed together.

''We are sorry, Mommy. It looked like those fast cars on TV, so Alex and I thought it was fake and just a board.'' Kelvin said, and Alex nodded in agreement.

'' We are sorry for causing another trouble mommy, please forgive us. It will never happen again, we promise.'' Alex added, but Clara and I knew very well that it was a fake promise, because it's not the first time they said it.

" A car?" She blurted out with widened eyes and glanced at me.

" Yes! And the man was good enough to forgive us.'' I responded, and Clara turned to the kids again.

'' I urged both of you to stay at home today, in order to avoid getting into trouble, but you promised not to, yet you did. Why are you so stubborn?"

The kids were unable to say a word, due to the way she was yelling at them. All they did was to fumble with their fingers, and chew on their bottom lips, while staring at the floor with a sad face.

'' Ma'am, I'm so sorry. Please forgive them. I'm sure they've learnt their lesson today.'' I said, and Clara glanced at the road with her bottom lip in her mouth and turned back to them.

She placed her hand on their shoulders and pulled them into a warm hug. Staring directly into their eyes, she said, “You know I love you both so much, right?”

'' We love you too, mommy. And we promise to stay at home, anytime you want us to.'' Alex said, and Kelvin nodded in agreement. They wrapped their arms around their mother, smiling sheepishly. It was a beautiful sight to see, and I couldn't stop smiling.

“Okay, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’d have your tablets taken away tonight, you both need to focus on school work, okay?''

Their countenance changed into a sad one, but they nodded either way. Alex stepped backward with fisted hands pointing directly at his mother. “Pick one, Mommy.”

Clara raised her brows in surprise and asked, “You have a little surprise for me?”

Alex nodded and gave his fists a tug, ''I don’t know who Daddy is fist, but if he didn’t give you lots of gifts when you were with him, then he is exactly like that bad man. You deserve lots of gifts, Mommy.''

''Awwww, My darlings…'' Clara said with a smile, and I noticed the way she was blinking her eyes rapidly, probably trying to control her tears. She tapped his right hand, and he opened it slowly to reveal a little beautiful white daisy flower that sat prettily on his palm.

“We saw this, and we thought of you, Mommy.” Kelvin said, and she grabbed both of them in a tight embrace.

“I love you two, so much!” She muffled, and tears streamed down her cheeks, while dhe sniffled loudly.

She pulled away and Kelvin grabbed Alex’s hand and cleared his throat. “We have a question, Mommy.”

Clara smiled and urged them to go on, while I folded my arms across my chest, and waited to hear what they had to say.

''That man back there looked exactly like us, Mommy. Is he our Daddy?''

Clara's face turned pale, and she quickly looked at me with widened eyes. I knew by the look on her face, that she demanded an answer from me, but I couldn't bring myself to respond, because I was lost in my own thoughts.

I mean, these kids were actually staring at the floor back in the man's office, ''then how did they see his face? Were they staring at him through the corner of their eyes?'' I asked myself, and nodded my head slightly as realization dawned on me.

They'd probably seen him the moment they stepped inside. " But is he truly their father?"

CHAPTER 5

'' That man back there looked exactly like us, Mommy. Is he our Daddy?

My heart sank, and my eyes pooped out of their sockets as I quickly turned my gaze to Flora, who was staring directly at my face. So many questions slipped into my mind, but I couldn't utter a word.

'' Who could they have seen? Is it Damon? No! Damon doesn't look like them. Could it be Callen?"

Kelvin and Alex were born with different facial looks, which made me wonder how possible it is. They didn't look like Damon at all, and it baffled me greatly, because Callen and I had never met before, until the day Damon took me to the hospital. Then how did my children end up looking like him?

" Mommy!" Kelvin's voice brought me back to reality, and with a startle, I turned to him.

'' Listen guys, I think it's just a coincidence that the man looked like you. It can happen to anyone, so it doesn't necessarily mean that you're related or something. It's not a big a deal, okay? You two forgot about your ice cream. Here it is!'' Flora said and hurried up to them with the ice cream in her hand. The kids' attention was shifted away from him, and I have Flora to thank for that. I heaved a sigh, and stood upright.

'' Time to go, guys! Come on.'' I grabbed Kelvin's hand and Flora carried Alex. Together, we hit the road.

" But mommy, you still haven't answered my question," Kelvin said, and I shook my head and rolled my eyes. Just when I thought I was free, I never knew that it was still lingering on his mind.

" I thought Aunt Flora had already given an answer to that." I glanced at him, but looked away quickly to stop the cab which was about to pass by.

" Aunt Flora, do you know my Daddy?" Alex asked, and I couldn't help but frown as I saw the worried look on the woman's face.

'' Can you stop pestering us with these silly questions? Why don't you talk about your school instead? Why Daddy! Daddy! Everytime?'' I blurted out, and the two kids frowned and mumbled.

" Other kids have a Daddy, and we don't have any."

'' They're also laughing at us. I wish I could see my Daddy too.''

My ego dropped instantly, and I looked over my shoulder to see my child's sad face. I bit my lips, and decided to brighten up the atmosphere by laughing, but they didn't smile at all.

" Hey! Don't give Mommy that look okay! Tell me what you want, I'll buy it for you. Do you want more ice cream? Pizza? Just name it, I'll get it for you.'' I said, trying to divert their minds, but the kids were adamant.

" I want Daddy!" Alex screamed, and I widened my eyes and glanced at the passers-by, who were already looking in our direction. Flora quickly covered hus mouth, and I gulped down and turned to Kelvin, who spoke in a low tone.

''What did Daddy do to you Mommy? Did he hurt you? Is that why you don't want us to see him?"

" Of course not, my lovely boy." I quickly lowered myself to his level, so that we came face to face. I grabbed his delicate cheeks and said, ''You will surely see your father, okay? It's just that he's not in town now. So be patient! And if anyone asks you about your father, tell them that he lives abroad. Do you understand?'' I asked and he nodded.

" Mommy! Does our father have big cars and big houses too?'' Alex asked, and I turned to him with a smile, nodding my head.

"Of course, he does," I replied.

" Does he have an airplane and a skyscraper too?" Kelvin asked.

" Yes dear. He has cars, houses, skyscrapers, and so many beautiful things you can think of.'' I said, and their eyes glinted in excitement.

'' I can't wait to see Daddy. I'll drive in an airplane,'' Alex said excitedly.

'' You don't drive on an airplane, Alex. You fly! Fly like a bird.'' Flora said and we giggled. The kids began to argue about who was more brilliant, and I was happy that their attention had finally been diverted. My mind drifted to our conversation earlier, and I began to ponder on their words.

There's no way I'll allow Damon to see them, nor Callen. Those two men are evil, and I don't trust them at all. Although I got into a contract with Callen, I couldn't bring myself to trust any man again. The reason why I ran away, and I wonder what would happen if he set his eyes on me again. I don't even want to think about it.

I waved at a cab, and fortunately it stopped, unlike the others. I carried Kelvin into the car, and stepped inside, while Flora did the same.
