Chapter 2

Author: Lana Viola
“Sure thing.”

Sensing something amiss, I quickly lowered my gaze. By avoiding eye contact with the youth, I managed to keep my expression neutral.

Little did I know that when this youth showed up, the comment section for the livestream blew up with activity.

[That’s a mini boss, Jorvan Beeker! He loves breaking open players’ skulls!]

[Based on the statistics, he has a kill rate of 99%! This newbie is dying for sure.]

[Keep holding on, Lin! You can do it, Lin!]

I was too busy to read any of these comments. I simply straightened my apron and did my job as Jorvan watched.

I cut a piece of fresh focaccia and started piling various ingredients on it: Lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and prosciutto.

Jorvan seemed content to wait. Like any other customer, he was partaking in the town’s gossip.

“Hey, Ms. Graves, did you hear about what happened last night?”

“I turned in early last night. What happened?”

To maintain my cover as just another of the game’s characters, I did my best to respond to him.

“Old Man Hurley from the edge of town got drunk on moonshine and got caught yapping about some stuff he shouldn’t have. Guess what happened? His wife chopped him up in the middle of the night!”

Jorvan excitedly described the gruesome scene and watched me closely for my reaction.

Based on what he was saying, I guessed that “Old Man Hurley” had failed in maintaining his cover as a character and was brutally murdered by the ghouls.

As expected, when I momentarily froze in my movements, Jorvan excitedly raised his hammer and aimed it at the back of my skull.

“Why have you stopped working, Ms. Graves?”

“Your focaccia sandwich is done.”

Jorvan was speechless.

Expressionlessly, I put my knife away and put the sandwich in a paper bag after adding a dash of olive oil to the whole ensemble.

Jorvan halted his attack and looked at the warm focaccia sandwich. His expression was a bit bewildered, and he looked as if he wanted to ask, “Is this it?”

He was quickly distracted by that same focaccia sandwich.

The bread was a warm golden brown. The sandwich was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The prosciutto was thinly sliced and glistened with the olive oil drizzled on it.

Altogether, the focaccia sandwich looked freshly cooked and delicious.

Jorvan’s initially rampant killing intent dissipated. I relaxed for a moment. I thought that I was going to muddle through this.

After a moment, Jorvan took out an infernal bill from his pocket.

However, the money was covered in sticky blood. When it touched my skin, I went and got a rag to wipe it off.

In the next second, I froze in place and dared not move.

Oh no.

In such horror games, only players could see blood. They could also see the actual undead nature of the ghouls.

Jorvan’s lips curled into a wicked smile, revealing a mouth full of sharp teeth as he stared at me.

“Who are you? Where did the original owner of this food stall go?”

Jorvan came closer and closer, and his sharp teeth were so close that I could almost feel them against my cheek.

I was so terrified that my limbs went weak. With a twitch of my hand, I grabbed the sandwich from his grasp and shoved it into his mouth.

Jorvan subconsciously bit down, and the flavors burst in his mouth. They were rich and explosive.

In an instant, his expression went lax. The hammer, which had been about an inch away from the back of my head, halted mid-swing.

In reality, Jorvan felt as if his world had been rocked to its core.

Why was the focaccia sandwich so extravagantly delicious? It was as if it was real. It was so crunchy and savory…

But it was impossible!

The NPC ghouls in horror games were wandering spirits of the dead. Since they were already dead, anything they experienced in the supernatural world of the game was false as well.

His sense of smell, of taste, of touch had long been defunct.

It was impossible for the food to taste of anything in a ghoul’s mouth.

Since Jorvan had paused, I got on my tiptoes uneasily, still holding onto the focaccia sandwich. I was terrified that my skull was going to be smashed in at any point.

However, Jorvan continued taking huge bites out of his focaccia sandwich.

This meant that I could go back to gain points from the food stall!Thinking about the ghouls lining up to get food every day, I happily patted my wallet. With points, I could keep upgrading and buying items while swapping points for additional days of life. This reward was only going to help me. Just as I was about to leave the supernatural world to go back to reality, Jorvan popped out in the blankness. I looked him over curiously. Hesitantly, I asked, “Why did you help me in the game?”Without Jorvan, I might not have been able to survive in that town for five days. Jorvan’s usually sordid mask slipped. He was quiet for a moment as he chose his words. “I was in a horror game myself thirteen years ago. Felix was one of my teammates. Back then, there was a woman on the team named Evelyn Costa. Felix and I owe her a great debt. Before she disappeared, she left us with an image of you when you were younger.”My heart skipped a beat when I heard this. I quickly reached out a

Felix maintained a neutral expression as he ate the starter. At the next dish, his expression relaxed. At the third, he found that the food was really good. When he got to the sixth dish, Felix was enveloped by a bright, white light. When the light faded away, his severed limbs seemed to meld back with his body, and he looked more human. However, he did not seem to react much. He only elegantly wiped his mouth with a napkin. When he saw all the other ghouls shielding me behind them, Felix’s expression turned dark. “Do you not have any sense of professionalism? How can you forget about your jobs just because you’ve had a few good meals?”“But, boss, the food’s really good!”“And we can get cleansed!”“We’re already dead, so what difference does it make if we’re cleansed?” Felix frowned. He swung his chainsaw around in displeasure. Hearing this, I stuck my head out from behind the ghouls and disagreed softly. “There’s a difference. It hurts to have wounds on your body.

The higher-ranked the talent items were, the more points would be needed to upgrade them. Fortunately, my job was special, and I was able to make enough points. Minus what I had spent on ingredients, I had made 3,000 dollars. In addition to the 1,600 dollars I had made, I had 4,600 in points. To a newbie player, this was a great sum. I raised my hand and hit Confirm without any hesitation. [Talent items: A set of C-Rank kitchen utensils (upgradeable), able to create culinary concoctions that even ghouls can taste. Other familiar ghouls were there as well. Klyton, Chitan, Trilius, Anella… They were all on high alert and diligently looking around the surroundings. I moved some big tables to place around the food stall and started preparing the food. I was not going to settle for

I was busy preparing more bowls of stew. When I heard about the cleansing, I remembered the new boost I had obtained from my upgrade last night. So the effect of cleansing worked on the ghouls. It seemed that my value in this supernatural world had gone up yet again. The next second, a new wave of ghouls gushed out from all over the town. First, they walked around Klyton and Chitan in surprise. Then, they obediently joined the line to purchase food. They seemed very enthused. Once again, I was busy ladling up stew because of how many customers wanted it. “Some friend you are, Trilius. Why didn’t you tell me about this place? It’s your fault, you know. Now I have to run over here from the hospital in secret. Do you know how awful the food at the hospital cafeteria is?”“Do you actually think that’s bad? The meals on the train are expensive AND tasteless.”The newly arrived ghouls were diligently eating. They practically inhaled the food. They seemed to be very envious of t

Over the past three days, I had earned 2,500 points. I had spent 600 points on my talent item upgrades and 100 points on ingredients. Thus, I had 1,800 points left. The defense shield cost 200 points to deploy just once. It was a rather steep price, so most players would not purchase it. But I was not most players. I was a highly vulnerable newbie player who happened to be a cook. The other player remained frozen on the spot for a while. His expression was mightily displeased, and I could see the desire to kill me flare in his eyes. After losing his weapon, it seemed clear that he wanted to go hand-to-hand. He was looking at me like I was prey. I was ready to keep buying items from the market to protect myself when a pair of pale hands reached out from behind him. “You’re a player. You’ve exposed yourself.”Jorvan expressionlessly grabbed the other player by the collar and dragged him into a nearby alley. Terrifying cries rang out, and I calmly arranged the chairs at the

Jorvan continued talking. “Trilius got into a car accident when he was making a delivery from his farm. His unfinished business is the baby he left at home, waiting to be fed.“Anella was the head nurse at an emergency department. She had been pulling so many overtime shifts trying to save people that she ended up dying from exhaustion. But she’s still thinking about saving more people.“All these painful memories, their unfinished business, slowly fade away the longer they stay in this world. The worst part is that everyone, including me, is gradually forgetting who they are.“What about you? What unfinished business do you have?”It was the first time I heard Jorvan say so much in one go. He was usually aloof. It was surprising that he actually knew so much about these ghouls’ pasts. I looked down to escape his gaze and quickly went over to retrieve the plates and cutlery. Did I have unfinished business? Of course. My father was still waiting for me. Once they finished
