Chapter 31

"Bruce was supposed to take over, but he's been delayed. So you’re stuck with me for a little longer," Dex says as we walk back upstairs. "Oh, okay," I answer. I should be disappointed, but I don't mind. Claire almost falls asleep in my arms; I hope she'll sleep through the night in her new crib.

"I assume you don't want company?" Dex asks cautiously as we arrive at my room. I shake my head. "No, I need some space to process everything," I answer, somewhat guiltily. He nods.

"But..."

  • Running away to Destiny   Chapter 61

Chapter 61Confusion washes over me. "What do you mean? Is she here?" I ask, though I already know the answer before the words are even out.Lyra is on edge; every muscle in her body is taut as she stands frozen. Drake stands beside her in the same stance. I scan the surroundings as best I can, even though I know it likely won't make much difference. Lyra sees more than I do."I don't see her," I whisper to Dex. I have to laugh at myself, as if whispering matters when we have a mind link; I could scream, and no one but Dex would hear me."No, but she was here. We’re certain; her scent is still fresh." If he heard me laugh, he doesn't let on.Instinctively, I take a deep breath, but I can't make sense of the mix of scents wafting toward me. Damp moss, pine, a few rabbits not far off, and, I think, a faint trace of a fox that has long since fled. I sniff again, determined to pick up her scent and contribute to whatever it is we’re about to do.And then... There it is. A familiar floral

  • Running away to Destiny   Chapter 60

"I'm ready."I barely finished speaking the words when I feel everything change. I feel myself losing control of my own body."Relax, I'll do all the work," I heard Lyra say.I suppressed a scream. "Easy for you to say," I managed to say to her.Dex came into my field of vision. "The first time is the worst. Breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth." I tried to do what he said, but the pain shooting through my body is unbearable. I fall forward onto the ground. Dex was talking to me, but it sounded like I’m underwater. I can't hear anything he is saying, only the pounding of my own heartbeat in my ears.I gasp for breath. White-hot pain shoots through my arms, legs, and shoulders. I clench my jaws to keep from screaming. "Breathe." Lyra commands. I am too consumed by the pain to respond. If something breaks in my arm, I scream. Goddammit, I don't know what is worse. This pain or the pain of my transformation."Relax, you're fighting it, that only makes it worse," Dex trie

  • Running away to Destiny   Chapter 59

Chapter 59For a brief moment, I wonder if I might have gone crazy, that the transformation failed, and that it has affected my brain.Even though I know deep down that it isn't the case. I look around the room, even though I know damn well that the voice didn't come from the room, but from me, from inside me.I stare at Dex, who looks at me with a mix of concern and barely concealed amusement. His lips twitch, the only confirmation I need.Okay, okay, no need to panic, I tell myself."Please don't start screaming. We share a body; I'd rather not start our relationship with a migraine."I blink. “Are you… My wolf?”"Excellent observation."Despite the bizarre situation, a laugh escapes me. It feels wrong to laugh right after I’ve done something that almost cost me my life.I give it a moment to let it sink in. And however bizarre it may be, it doesn't feel frightening... it feels... natural. As if I am... reconnecting with something I lost a long time ago."You feel strangely normal,"

  • Running away to Destiny   Chapter 58

Chapter 58 - Dex pov.It started as we had expected. Lilly lost consciousness when she could no longer bear the pain.I have survived battles, defeated rivals, and witnessed terrible things on the battlefield, but seeing Lilly suffer is the worst thing I have ever had to go through. Seeing her body fight against the poison inside her, the poison I gave her so that she would become just like me.Although it started as we had expected, she is deteriorating more and more. Her body is not accepting the change, even though she was convinced that the mating bond would help her. Her heart rate is slowing down, her breathing becoming lighter."Please, Lilly, you can't leave me," I whisper, her wrist pressed against my lips. "Don't give up," I murmur as the doctor checks her pulse for the umpteenth time. He opens her eyes one by one, but she doesn't react to the light. As if no one is home.Another tear rolls down my cheeks. "She is stronger than this. I know she is." I have to believe it, oth

  • Running away to Destiny   Chapter 57

Chapter 57The next evening feels like it is coming much too quickly. The night feels different. Heavier. As if the air knows what is about to happen. My fingers tremble slightly as I look in the small mirror on the wall.Even a blind person can see the nerves in my eyes. I still want to push through, but the anxious feeling that has overwhelmed me since I dropped Claire off is becoming increasingly dominant.Dex takes my hand. "You can still change your mind." His voice is no more than a whisper. I take a deep breath and look at him in the mirror in an attempt to get my nerves under control. It doesn't work. Seeing and feeling his worry only fuels it. "I won't," I try to say as confidently as possible.I turn to him. He tries to hide it, the fear, the worry. But I can feel it now, through our bond. I cup his face. "I trust you." It takes no effort for me to say this with certainty, because it is not a lie. I trust him completely. I know that if there is anyone who can help me through

  • Running away to Destiny   Chapter 56

Chapter 56The moment Dex agreed, something in the air changed. Not lighter, but despite our discussion, it felt heavier.Even though we hadn't talked about it since the last time, it always hung between us like a sort of storm. A storm that just wouldn't break. And now the storm has subsided. The question of whether or not I would change is no longer a question. It is a decision. A decision for which a plan must be made.Minutes after Dex agreed, he changed from a concerned, loving mate to the Alpha. He calls Reece and Ronan over. He tries to appear calm and driven, but the tension in his shoulders betrays him. At least, I can see right through it. If the others notice anything at all, they don't show it. They head into another room, while I stay in the office with Claire. Claire is still entertaining herself with the toys Beth brought earlier today."Are you okay?" asks Beth, who is now standing next to me. I jump; I was so lost in thought that I hadn't heard her coming. She smiles

  • Running away to Destiny   Chapter 33

Chapter 33 - Lilly’s pov.I've just woken up to Claire's cheerful chatter when there's a knock on the door. The person on the other side of the door is rather impatient, because there's another knock, this time more urgent. "I'm coming!" I shout, slightly irritated. I don't know who it is, but he i

Chapter 53 The silence that follows after Lucy and Alex have fled is almost worse than the confrontation itself. Chapter 50I informed the omega who's looking after Claire that it might take a little longer now that we have an emergency meeting. Luckily, she's no stranger to that and assured me it's no problem. It's a perk of pack life, I guess; there's almost always a sitter available, and they're all equall
