Damien

I should've turned back the moment I saw the closed sign on the door, but my curiosity got the best of me.

Sweet Haven.

Its glowing neon sign was still on. I'd been here before. Once or twice and I'd never seen that damn signboard emit so much as a flicker, she had probably fixed it.

The inside was dimly lit, but I could tell someone was still in. I wasn't even entirely sure why I was there in the first place, but I knew I had to see it. I had to see what was causing all this fuss. I walked in.

"You know I'm starting to feel like we can really kick their butts in this legal war..."

It was Callie speaking. She sounded stressed but at the same time satisfied. She was the only person I knew who could pull off that kind of combination.

This would've been a good time for me to check out. Leave and never turn back, but I couldn't help myself from saying what I said next.

"Oh really?"

It was amusing, her thinking that she could beat our asses with her cheap law

  • Running from My Billionaire Baby Daddy   Chapter 16

Callie I'd never felt dread like this in my entire life. Everything hurt. My breathing, my thinking. It was like the world had come to a standstill, and all that remained was pain. Heartstopping, gut-wrenching pain. It wasn't anything physical. It was a mental war in my head. How could it have come to this? Was I not a good mom? How could I have missed any signs? He's been healthy all his life, like a normal boy his age. What could suddenly go wrong? And if it wasn't something internal, then had someone done this to him? My heart could hardly bear it, hearing that my little boy had just collapsed in the middle of the park and an ambulance had to carry him to the hospital. "Can we get there any faster?" Clara was already driving well over the speed limit. But I couldn't get my nerves to still themselves. I needed to see Cass. I needed to make sure he was okay. "Tell me what happened again," “When we get there, you’ll talk to the doctors,” Clara said, her voice firm but

Damien The morning hadn't been going so well. The contractors sent a messenger informing us we were running out of time to make this deal work. It was basically a threat. And I didn't do well with being threatened."Sir, the meeting is about to begin." I was lost in thought when my secretary walked in to announce.Callie and her troupe were here. Fuck. They were the ones making this deal difficult for me. What the fuck was so special about their fucking bakery? She could take the money and buy one somewhere else if she cared so much about passion. What did she want, really? I bet she just wanted to make this difficult for me. Just out of spite, or for attention. Right. That could be it. She was probably enjoying the attention that all of this was getting her. Well, not from me, though. That party was about to end. I used to think I knew her, but it turns out I didn't. You would see the signs if someone was about to ghost you for all eternity, after all. Thinking back on that time a

Callie I was back in this cold, lifeless conference room, but this time it was with Clara and Nadia by my side. We were the last holdouts— the only business unwilling to sell or agree to any of their terms. So, here we were, just us, against a legal team of five. All men. Typical. They were sharp-suited, barely looked at us when we entered, and had probably been rehearsing their strategies since dawn. The lead among them—Anderson, I think his name was— offered a tight smile that didn’t reach his eyes. There were five of them, but one last seat was reserved for someone who should have been here—someone we’d been waiting for for the past fifteen minutes. The silence of the room was only more accentuated by the sounds of paper and files rustling in the air. Soon enough, a younger-looking executive walked in. He whispered something directly to Anderson's ear and then left immediately. Anderson cleared his throat noisily, appearing to be a little bit more relaxed. “Let's begin

Callie It was before opening hours the next day. Clara and I were elbow-deep in pastry prep, alternating between working in the kitchen and looking through the stack of applications we'd gotten for the waiter position. I hadn't told her what had happened the night before. I was waiting for the right time, which—judging by the lull in our conversation— I was guessing was now. I blurted it out. “Damien came here during closing hours yesterday.” Clara didn't even flinch. “You know by now I would've thought you'd know how easily I can read you.” “Right,” I muttered. It was true. She was oddly talented at guessing what I was thinking. And she’d proven it time and time again. “I could tell that someone had been in here when I got back; their musk still lingered in the air. It smelled luxurious.” “Oh, please. Whose side are you on again?” I rolled my eyes at her playfully. “Uh… yours, of course…” she paused. “Before we get back to that, look at this.” She showed me the

  • Running from My Billionaire Baby Daddy   Chapter 11

Callie The morning had been going surprisingly well. It was almost as if nothing of interest had happened the week before. Like a certain someone hadn't vowed to make my life hell. If I could ignore the thumping in my chest at the thought of him or the constant worrying about the future of my bakery, I could almost pretend like none of it ever happened. Almost. But aside from that, life was going pretty well. Sweet Haven was picking up attention, slowly but surely. Cass was finally at daycare. From the moment we opened at 9:00 a.m. today, we had a handful of customers. And they were ordering more than just coffee. Our register was making more progress. I felt glad about that. We’d also put out a sign that said we were hiring someone to wait tables. Clara had finally decided we couldn’t do it all by ourselves. Thank goodness. This morning, a small tourist group had made their way to the city, and they were the bulk of our customers for today. The air smelled like

Callie My phone beeped in my hand as I walked out of the building. I knew Clara was texting to say she had just gotten here to pick me up, but I was too rattled to look at my phone. What had just happened? Not during the meeting, but after...Being in such proximity to him did some damage to the walls I had built up over the years. I felt all soft and mushy inside like I was twenty years old again. My mind was all over the place. I could feel my heart thumping right out of my chest the moment he was near me. I expected bitterness, anger, resentment, but this— this, I wasn’t ready for. Underneath all of the anger in his eyes, I could see something else that was alarmingly clear. He had one question for me. Why?I didn't think I could answer that.Clara was here. I wasn’t sure if I could tell her the entire truth of what had just happened. It didn’t take long for her blue Ford to come rolling into the parking lot. Cass was in the back seat. Already excited and waving his little hand

  • Running from My Billionaire Baby Daddy   Chapter 9

Damien Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Why was she here? How could she sit there and look so beautiful like she hadn't caused me any pain? Like she hadn't blown my life to pieces? How could she come back here knowing what she'd done? Callie. Mrs Callie Rivera. She had changed so much. Gone was the innocence and naivete of a twenty-year-old college student. She was much more mature now, having evened out in all areas. She was glowing and knew it, and she was here now, taunting me with her presence. I couldn't tear my eyes away from her. A part of me felt like she was just a figment of my imagination, and if I looked away, she would disappear like she did those years ago. I couldn't bear to go through that ever again. I was angry at her— furious— but I was even more angry at myself, realising how much I’d missed her. I probably still even cared. I'd dreamed about meeting her again. I'd always thought I would deal her a cold shoulder, breeze past her like we were total strangers—t

  • Running from My Billionaire Baby Daddy   Chapter 8

CallieHe was looking straight at me. Every sound in the room died down to a dull hum, and it felt as though it was just the two of us right there—Damien and me. I couldn't make sense of the somersaults my heart was doing in my chest or the tight knot that formed in the pit of my belly, causing me to lean back in my seat. It was like my body was trying to retreat from the moment. But there was no escaping this.I was floored. Utterly and completely.I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I'd left, hoping that life and fate would keep our paths from ever crossing again. But that plan had failed. The very same face I'd run away from those years ago was the one I was staring into right now. He had changed a lot—grown rather. He was no longer the soft, sweet, charming bloke I fell for. Everything about him, appearance-wise, was sharp and cold. His eyes were devoid of any tangible emotion. Even now, looking right at me, the only hint of emotion I got from him was a flash of something unr
