Daphne's POV

By the time I get back to the bedroom, Julian's sitting on the edge of the bed, elbows on his knees, laptop closed and set aside, like he's been waiting there since I left. He looks up when the door opens, and whatever's on my face must still show something, because his expression softens immediately, all the hurt from earlier folding into something gentler.

"Hey." He doesn't move toward me right away, just watches me carefully. "You okay?"

"I'm sorry." The words come out before I

Julian’s POVMr. Aldous arrives on Thursday at four o’clock, exactly as he promised, carrying a case no bigger than a hardcover book. He’s shown into the living room by Luca, who gives me a look of such studied neutrality that I know he’s already guessed what’s in the case. Daphne comes down the stairs in her socks with her hair up. She sees the jeweler, stops on the third step from the bottom, and puts her left hand behind her back as though she’s been caught at something.“You can look at it first,” Mr. Aldous says gently. “Before it goes back on.”“I’d rather put it on and then look.”“A sensible order.”She takes the ring from its velvet slot herself. I stand off to the side, near the window, with my hands in my pockets. This is hers. I realized that in the shop, with the rain coming down and her face lit up from the inside. Some things you give someone, and then you step back. She slides it on. The band has been resized by a hair, so that it sits snug against the knuckle, and the

Julian's POVThe north-end safehouse sits at the end of a gravel lane, behind a fence and a stand of bare trees, and in daylight it looks like nothing at all. I carry a folder under one arm and a thermos in my other hand. Luca offered to come down with me. I told him I'd rather do this part with no one else in the room. The two men on the door nod and step aside. One of them says, "He's been quiet since Tuesday," and I say, "Thank you," and go down the stairs. The room is the same, concrete and one bulb, but Brento has changed. He's thinner. His beard has come in uneven, and the split along his eyebrow has healed to a pale line. He's no longer tied to the chair. They gave him a cot and a table a week ago, and he sits on the cot with his back against the wall and his knees drawn up, watching the door as I open it. He doesn't stand. He doesn't speak until I've set the thermos on the table and taken the chair across from him."Did he send you," he says, "or did you come on your own?""Wh

DaphneCaleb Hunter is already at a corner table when I walk in, two cups steaming in front of him like this is just another catch-up. He stands when he sees me, and his smile is so relieved that part of me wants to turn around before I ruin it."You came.""I did." I stop beside the table and rest my hand on the back of the empty chair without pulling it out. "I'm not staying."His smile fades. He glances at the cups, then back at me. "I ordered your usual.""Caleb, I need to say something once, and I need you to actually hear it."He lowers himself back into his seat. "Okay. I'm listening.""This is the last time I'm meeting you."The milk steamer shrieks behind the counter and cuts off, and the quiet it leaves is worse than the noise."Daphne—""We've done this before." I nod toward the window, where Julian's black SUV waits at the curb, two men inside pretending not to watch the door. "Every time we sit down, you tell me you're just checking on an old friend. And every time, the c

Daphne's POVI hear the car at ten to one, and I'm out of bed before it stops.By the time he reaches the top of the stairs, I'm in the hallway in his old sweater, the nightlight throwing a small gold circle on the carpet between us. He has his coat over one arm and his tie in his fist. His face is washed out, and he looks like someone who has walked a very long way to get to a door that turned out to be smaller than he remembered."He's gone," he says."Come to bed.""I should wash first. I smell like that place.""Wash, then. I'll be here."I sit on the edge of the mattress while the shower runs. The bathroom door is open a hand's width, steam sliding out into the cold bedroom, and I listen to the water the way I once listened for tires on gravel. It runs a long time. Longer than a shower needs. When it finally stops, I count to thirty, then pull back the blankets on his side and wait.He comes out in a gray T-shirt, hair dripping onto his shoulders, and stands at the foot of the be

Julian's POVThe room Luca chose has no windows, a table, two chairs, and a single bulb on a cord.I stand outside the door for a full minute before I go in. Behind me, Luca waits without speaking, which is how I know he understands what this is. Inside, my uncle has been sitting for eleven days. I told them to treat him well, and they have. There's a clean shirt on his back and a half-eaten tray of food on the floor. The only thing missing is his phone.I open the door.Vittorio doesn't look up right away. He's seated with his hands folded on the table, his back straight, as though he's still presiding over a meeting. His hair has gone whiter than I remember. The suit is gone, and without it, he looks like what he is, an old man in a small room."Julian.""Vittorio.""You took your time." He lifts his eyes, and they're cold and clear. "I'd begun to wonder if you'd lost your nerve."I sit down across from him. Luca closes the door and stays beside it."You wanted me alone in a basemen

Daphne's POVThe jeweler's shop doesn't have a sign.It has a heavy brass door, a doorbell nobody rings, and a man in a gray cardigan who opens it before Julian touches the handle. Luca's men stay on the street, and Julian guides me inside with one hand at the small of my back. The room is small and warm and smells faintly of metal polish and old wood. Velvet trays line the glass counters, and every surface glows under soft, golden light."This is a lot," I whisper."You said you wanted to choose.""I said I wanted a *simple* ring.""This is the simple place." He keeps his voice low and perfectly serious. "You should see the other one."I elbow him in the ribs, gently, remembering the bruise, and he grins. The jeweler, whose name is Mr. Aldous and who has the dignified patience of a man who has watched a great many people lose their composure in this room, sets out three velvet trays on the counter with quiet ceremony. Julian pulls a stool out for me before I can ask. I sit, and he st
