Lyra Ashbourne POV

I had not expected to hear from Kaia Draven so soon after her fight with her father, and it was an even bigger shock when she dragged me out to Black Hollow City to browse the Artisan Hall market for new tunic furs.

She turned in front of the tall vanity mirror, checking out her pale ass in a pair of dark leather breeches while I leaned back against the iron bench, waiting. "How do these look on my wolf frame, Lyra? I swear my ass looks even flatter than usual."

"You look gre

"I thought you were going to spend the entire afternoon lingering in the pavilion's grand halls," I said, pausing as I tossed a spare leather harness into my duffel bag and watched Peregrine Ashdown descend the companionway steps into the small, wood-paneled cabin of Lady Fortune."I got intel I didn't want to sit on until dinner," Peregrine replied, sliding onto the narrow wooden bench by the navigation desk."Don't tell me Edmund Blackmere pulled out of the regatta," I said dryly."Not a chance. You'll still get your shot at crushing him on the water," Peregrine grinned. "Though you'll also get a shot at beating him in a high-stakes game of pack politics. All you have to do is play the gallant guardian and rescue a certain damsel in distress."I gave him a sharp, disbelieving look. "What on earth are you talking about? Why are you speaking in riddles?""Sir Galahad," Peregrine declared."What?""Not what. Who," Peregrine corrected. "You."I crossed my arms and studied my second-in-c

"I shall consider that a warning, Lady Honoria," I murmured, my eyes lingering on her faux-innocent smile.Honoria beamed like a cat who had just cornered a mouse. "Please do, my lord."I caught a flash of dark amusement in Alpha Ambrose Fenleigh's eyes as I collected the young female and led her away from the group. Strangely enough, I found nothing humorous about my predicament."So what is this grand plan you dragged me into the library for, Peregrine?" I asked later that afternoon, closing the heavy mahogany doors behind us.Normally, this hour was reserved for formal tea gatherings, but since the pavilion's official agenda hadn't begun and lunch had dragged on, most of the nobility had retired to their suites to rest before the evening feast.Peregrine flopped into a leather armchair across from me and waggled his eyebrows. "You practically gave me a coded summons about a recommended book. I don't think I've ever opened a novel in my entire li

"The Alpha of the Fenleigh Pack and his second-in-command, my lord," Winifred Pritchard announced, giving a cursory, rigid nod in Peregrine Ashdown's direction. "Lord Percival Kingsnorth has not yet made his grand entry, but several high-ranking pack leaders are currently gathering for the mid-day feast in Luna's Tea Room. If you will follow me."I didn't offer the butler the satisfaction of a verbal reply, simply matching his heavy stride as he led us through the arched entry into the Pack Gathering Gallery. My golden Alpha eyes swept the surrounding corridor, noting the subtle pack sigils carved into the stone columns and the massive iron sconces lining the walls. The interior smelled heavily of pine polish, old stone, and the distant, metallic tang of blood and silver. We mounted a short flight of stone steps at the far end of the gallery. Winifred stopped outside a set of double oak doors."Luna's Tea Room, my lords," Winifred stated coldly. "Pack refreshments have been set out. S

"I finally managed to slide Lady Fortune into a slip along the Moonshore Bay docks," I told Peregrine Ashdown, hopping off the wooden deck to help him secure the thick mooring ropes. The harbor was mostly quiet. The grand marina was still empty, and I didn't see any sign of Edmund Blackmere’s aggressive flagship."It doesn't look like Blackmere Tide has put in yet," Peregrine observed, wiping his brow against the salty sea breeze."Aye, you couldn't miss that vessel if you tried," I replied, grabbing my heavy duffel. I had only laid eyes on Edmund's customized cutter once, but its low, razor-sharp hull and twin twin-screw engines were built strictly for raw speed and intimidation. It was one of the deadliest imports out of the Greyhaven Port shipyards, and I intended to prove my vessel could outmaneuver it."Maybe Blackmere is still hunting down his missing cognac," Peregrine suggested with a grin. "Word at The Alpha's Club is that the Masked Alpha stripped his entire shipment clean."

"I can hardly help how I look, Father," I said, gazing at him with feigned innocence. His thick brows drew together in a harsh line. "You know very well that is not what I mean, Rosalind. You are up to something.""How can I be up to something?" I replied smoothly, keeping my tone light so he wouldn’t suspect a thing. "We have not even stepped foot inside the Moonshore Pack Pavilion yet."Bartholomew grunted, far from fooled by my defensive front. "Is it asking too much that you behave with proper decorum while we are here?""Of course it isn't," I answered, keeping my face completely blank. It wouldn't be asking too much if I had any intention of allowing Edmund Blackmere to brand me as his submissive mate, carry his heirs, and absorb the Whitcombe Pack into his corrupt bloodline. But that was never going to happen. I would burn Thornmere Territory to the ground before I knelt at the altar in the Moon Bond Chapel tomorrow night. An ho

"Do you truly think we require nine trunks, Betsy?" I asked, pacing the floor of my bedchamber in Whitcombe Pack Manor. The room looked as though a tempest had ripped through it. Suits, tailored leather vests, silk shirts, and formal tunics spilled over the edge of the carved wooden four-poster bed and draped across every chair. Riding boots, polished parade boots, and light leather slippers littered the rug."Of course we do, Master Rosalind," Betsy Wrenford answered brightly, neatly folding a heavy dark green dress coat. "Lord Percival Kingsnorth is hosting the gathering at Moonshore Pack Pavilion. Every Alpha and high-ranking noble in Thornmere Territory will be in attendance."I didn't care if every grand Alpha from Ravenwick City down to Greyhaven Port showed up, but there was one male I desperately wished would stay away: Leopold Ashcombe, my former mate. Even though I no longer felt an ounce of affection for him, I had no desire to watch him parade around

I opened my eyes and saw Kairo watching me. He was sitting at my small desk, his huge body looking way too big for the wooden chair. He had his pants on, but his bare chest was on full display. I could not believe last night. I had liked him since my first year at Moonridge Academy, and I never tho

"Get off the bed, Nia," Kairo growled. He pulled up his dark pants and zipped them fast, but then he froze. I looked down to see what made him stop. There was bright red blood on his skin.I bit my lip hard, my face burning super hot with embarrassment. I looked up at his face. His eyes were wide,

"Put down the cup, Nia," Kairo said. His deep voice vibrated straight through my bones. My whole body jumped, and my heart went fast, hitting hard against my ribs. I turned around quick, my bare legs shaking in my short pink dress.Kairo Adeyemi stood right there in the middle of the crowded party.

"This is Omari's sister," Kairo introduced his date. Short and to the point. He never wasted energy on excess words, did he."Oh my gosh," the woman's squeal startled me. "Callum Hayes! I am such a fan." Her voice was high-pitched, and she beamed like a hundred-watt light bulb. She turned her gaze
