The rain was pouring heavily outside. Celeste got out of the car. She had hair stuck to her face and her dress to her body. She was shivering..

She had made the choice. She had left her mother’s rebellion camp. She had chosen Damien.

Now she had to face him.

The house was quiet. Too quiet. She entered and shut the door behind her. The marble ground had grimy marks from her boots.

"Damien?" she rang out.

No reaction.

Her heart was bumping blood faster than usual. She walked carefully down the corridor.

He was sitting in the study.

His face came into view as he was lightly tilting the drink in his hand and eyes fixed on the dancing flames when she opened the door.

He didn't raise his head or make a sound.

“I thought you left me,” he said.

“I came back,” she replied.

He finally turned to face her. His eyes were red. “Why did you go?”

“I had to see her,” Celeste said. “I had to know if she was really alive. If everything is true.”

“And was it?” he asked bitterly.

She nodded slowly. “Yes.”
