Marco

They asked me if I had anything to say.

The officers, that is. The fucking cops. They stood there, with their notepads in their hands, their brows furrowed like they actually cared for me, waiting for me to open my mouth and explain what the hell had happened.

Like any of this made sense. Like I could find words for what had been done.

I didn’t speak, I couldn’t. Everything that had ever meant anything to me had gone up in flames. My home, my legacy. My brother was dead.

And I said nothing.

The older one, the lead officer or whatever the fuck he was, tried again, softer this time. “Mr. Falcone… we know this must be difficult, but we need something to go on. We’re reviewing the footage from your surveillance system now. No casualties reported, thank God. Apparently, everyone had vacated the property before the fire started. A miracle, if you ask me.”

Miracle? I almost laughed. This had to be a sick fucking joke. A miracle, but Emilio was dead and my family home burnt down.

SixGiovanni stood by the window, arms crossed, his sharp gaze sweeping the street below. He was always on alert, that was why he was my most trusted man. He was the only one who knew the location of our safe house and the only one allowed to visit. "I'm going to send the men up here, you need to be protected. I don't know for how long we can keep this location a secret.""Okay."He looked at me like I was a two-headed monster. "Okay?" He was probably expecting me to argue about it. We always did, and frankly, I was tired of arguing with him. It wasn't that I didn't trust my men, in all the years I spent with Antonio in his service, I had trained a lot of men who were fiercely loyal to me. I think Antonio knew that and was jealous of that, which was why he sent me away. I didn't want them involved because I didn't want them to be targeted, not by Antonio or by Marco."Yes, okay.""Thank the madre di Dio (Mother of God)," he whispered under his breath.I chuckled. "They're still at it

MarcoThe stench in the basement tickled my nostrils. It was mold, sweat, blood, piss, and a strong stench. It was everywhere, but I had gotten used to it. I’ve been down here too many times in the last few days. The two bastards tied to the chairs in front of me had gone silent, one already slumped over with his face swollen and purple, the other still glaring up at me like he had something to prove. They were the Chellinis’ boys, fiercely loyal to them. They had served them for years. I was about to put that loyalty to the test.Francesco stood in the corner, arms crossed, not saying much, just watching. He’d been colder lately, detached, but at least he was here. At least he hadn’t walked away from me.That had to mean something. He didn’t directly ask me about the man that I had shot out in the field, but I had a feeling he knew. The man hadn’t shown up at work. Nothing could get past him, but he didn’t confront me. I was walking on thin ice with him.“Ask him again,” I muttered.

ArabellaI woke to the soft scent of butter and coffee before I even opened my eyes. My body ached in that satisfying way that meant I had slept deeply, like I hadn’t in months. The sheets felt softer, the pillow cradled my cheek perfectly, it was chill and smelled like flowers. And for the first time in forever, my mind wasn’t racing the second I woke up.It was quiet. There were no crippling nightmares in my head, the fear was replaced by a warm, fuzzy feeling. I felt safe, I felt happy.I opened my eyes to the glow of early morning sunlight seeping through the curtains. The bed dipped beside me slightly, and when I turned my head, there he was, Leonardo, sitting with a tray balanced in his hands, looking at me with undiluted adoration in his eyes.He smiled, and I swear my heart bloomed in my chest. “Good morning, flower,” he said gently, slightly tucking my hair behind my ear.“You made me breakfast?” I asked, my voice hoarse with sleep.“I did.” He shrugged and placed the tray ov

MarcoThe sun had started to set when we lowered Nonna into the ground. The sound of the soil hitting the top of the coffin was dull.People stood quietly in a wide circle, their heads bowed. Some were crying, others were whispering prayers under their breath.I squatted near the grave, my elbows resting on my knees, fingers knotted together so tight they ached. The dug-up grave made me realize just how final it was.I was never going to see her again. I stared at the spot where they’d just buried the only woman who ever gave a damn whether I lived or died.“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I’m sorry I failed you.”Francesco was quiet beside me. Bianca stood a few paces back, her arms crossed over her chest.“I won’t fail you again,” I murmured. “I’ll protect this family. I swear on your grave, and I’ll find them, every last one of them, and make them regret this.”Francesco stepped forward and cleared his throat. His voice cracked. “We’ll make you proud, Nonna. Even if it kills us, even if

ArabellaI turned to find Leonardo standing in the doorway, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. His hands were shoved deep into his pockets, his eyes lit up in excitement.“We’re going on a drive,” he said, like it was the most casual thing in the world.I blinked. “What?”His smile grew. “Get dressed. We’re going on a little trip.”My heart stopped. “Leo…” I stepped toward him slowly, searching his face for the punchline. “Are you serious? You mean… outside?”He nodded.“To where? Is it safe? What about Marco?” I asked, each word tumbling out faster than the last. “Isn’t everyone in this city looking for us? What if someone sees—”“Hey,” he said softly, closing the distance between us. His hands cupped my face, his thumb brushing under my eye. “It’s safe. I promise you. We’ve been holed up for too long. I think we deserve this.”His voice was calm, steady. I stared into his eyes, still uncertain. “But Leo, I—”“Just trust me.”I did. Against all odds, against all reason
