Gritting his teeth, Meph finished the job anyway.

With the last gear falling into the correct location, the lock flings open with a slight click. At that one tiny sound, everything falls into absolute silence. The shaking of the door. The rabbit’s frantic shouting. The icy wind twirling in the room. Meph would believe the storm that almost took down the door was all but a dream, if it wasn’t for the very real pain that’s still burning his wrist.

Never has he been so grateful for having alexithymia, if he could feel what grateful is—

Sudden pain. That’s the real test. Not the question. A harmless shadow suddenly starts to burn would panic anyone. Anyone but Meph. He could feel pain, but his brain won’t shut down at it. He won’t lose focus or train of thoughts to fear, pain, or any old trick the trail knows.

He WILL complete the trail. He was born for it, he knew.

The rabbit is waiting right outside the door. He must be. Just like the first time. And now with the little golden lock dropped on the ground, there is nothing stopping the rabbit from coming in.

Taking a deep breath, Meph stands calmly, too, not in a hurry to forward the trail. He has to regain his energy lost to the low temperature and the burning pain. But the screens are not as calm. In fact, it just blew up—

[Wow wow wowwwwww! What the fuck! What, the, fuck, just happened?!]

[Did, did he really?! How the fuck did he figured out the combination?! A blind shot???]

[No! I saw him stare at the key poster, the one with the queen. He must understood the hints even without the system intro!]

[No freaking way! Even after the rabbit told him he was sent here to look for Alice, how long was that? Ten, twenty seconds? And you are telling me, this newbie, in his first game, without even his game panel activated, got through the skin-peeling rabbit?! No, freaking, way!!! I was so looking forward to his scream mixed with his skin ripped off…]

[Eww, gross! I’m not tired yet of his pretty face]

[Pretty face doesn’t get you through the trail, sister. I don’t know what the fuss is about this kid. Anyone could have gotten the door open. I mean, come on. The Hollow Log is the death zone not because what’s inside, but what after you open the door, okay? This is nothing special]

[It’s special because he opened the door with absolute no information! I believe in him.]

[You believe in him? Huh! No one has ever gone out of the Hollow Log alive. Not, even, one! No offense to the heroes who died here, but it’s a dead end, okay? You are sent by the Queen to find Alice, are you? If yes, then off with your head when you don’t give him Alice. If you lie, guess what—]

[Skinnnnnnnned!]

[Why can’t he give the rabbit Alice?]

[Wow, I didn’t know that there are still audiences who hasn’t watched this trail at least once!]

[He can’t give the rabbit Alice because—]

[Wait wait wait, what’s that?! Holy shi—He got his game panel!!! NOW??? OMG hahahahahahaha]

[His panel looks weird no? Everybody’s panel is a black wristband, no? Why is his… a black snake?]

--- Bullet Comments with spoiler will be screened out for the hero ---

The heavy, three inches thick door opens swiftly as if a veil at a light breeze. No sound. No fuss. Out in the darkness, stands the skeleton rabbit. His head low. His tall hat hidden by the black sky.

The rabbit asks with a hoarse voice, “Where…is…Ali-…?”

The next question! Meph focuses his eyes on the rabbit, his brain running on top speed, going through all the information he gathered.

But the rabbit never finishes his questions. His voice stops abruptly, and the dark fog penetrating the door also stops.

As if a movie paused on screen.

?

Meph blinks. As much as he prepared himself, he didn’t see this coming.

[Welcom--]

[Wel--]

[Wel--]

The emotionless voice raises again. This time near him. Meph follows the sound by instinct, only to notice his new tattoo — the black little snake around his wrist — is glowing red, projecting a hologram of a game panel right above its little snake head, one that moves along with his movements.

The panel looks like an old fashioned computer screen. Lines of green words over a pitch black background. Ugly as hell.

There is really no need for the angels to localize the trial to the first glimpse they took on the human civilization. Such a weird combination of magic and ancient computer tech is like seeing a tissue section of the failed civilization that ran itself into extinction.

Lines of words fly up on the screen, pushing the previous line up as more rush in. As if some invisible hands are typing like crazy. The emotionless voice is back as the lines flies, trying to catch up only to fail--

[Welcome!]

[The future--]

[You are in the Trial of Alice--]

[Main quest--]

[Side quest complete: Escape the Hollow Log]

[Main quest unlocked: Hand Over Alice Alive]

“Where is Alice?” The rabbit suddenly snaps out of his zoned out situation after the system’s voice died out, as if it’s forbidden for the NPCs and the system to notice each other’s existance.

The dark fog around him lunges at Meph as he adds, “The Queen sent you for her, no? You know the consequence if you fail.”

Be headed. That’s a no brainer.

The fog surrounds Meph like a huge claw of an enormous monster, ready to choke him at any movement he dares to make. It looks like normal fog except for the color, but Meph feels like he is carrying a mountain on his back, which is ready to collapse on him at any second.

Such is the power of a concept deity!

Meph has no doubt that the fog would crash him if he gives the wrong answer.

Even though the system didn’t give him any information when the trail started. Even though his game panel failed to complete any of the sentences it should have said. But Meph understands the situation now—

The trial was supposed to provide information, but due to some glitches, it was delayed, at the worst timing no less — it jumped the third question to the second time asking. Meaning, the rabbit already provided the last piece of information he would give, and Meph can’t afford not to answer, or answer wrong at the moment.

Death…or alive. This is the moment of fate.

[Oh my gosh he got even cuter!!!][He actually thought we’d help him? Haha, well, he did give me a laugh][Even if we want to help you, we can’t. The spoilers would be screened out, smart boy!!!][Let me try...we also have a screen, just like you, and the star shards is the currency we use. Could you see?][What’s the point? He is arrested in one of the most lethal trials, changed his role somehow, to an already dead girl, and the first help he asked is about star shards? He’s dead.][Or stupid]--- Bullet Comments with spoiler will be screened out for the hero ---The bullet comments on the screen blew up into another climax, filled with more vicious curses this time and even less information. But the smirk on Meph’s face widened.“You guys are the best fans!” Meph’s long, deep, foxy eyes smile into two curvy lines, yet somehow he doesn’t come off as crafty but harmless and innocent, as if he really meant it.The amount of comments blew up, meaning star shards were a sensitive topic.

  • S&M Post Apocalypse   011 Spoilers

“Well,” As if trying to make up for his one-mistakes-after-another-service today, the snake pulled up a new page before Meph could, showing the status of the new Soul Seal Meph got, which was almost empty except for three short sentences in the middle:[Spirit Egg (Legendary)][Status: Hatching][ETA: 12 hours]Meph: “...”How could an item that would only hatch after 12 hours help him now?! Shouldn't it be some legendary weapon like Blood Sword or something?! This was the most useless item he got in ANY game, EVER!The snake wanted to talk more, but Meph force-closed his page. He needed some alone time to calm down, or he would definitely try to uninstall the darn snake.Knock. Knock. Knock.Three slow knocks on the door. The rabbit is getting impatient. Meph answers as he reaches for the doorknob, only to pause because he saw a little red dot on the screen when he closed the game panel. He clicks on the snake tattoo yet again, and the game panel pops up instantly, along with the sna

  • S&M Post Apocalypse   010 What's A Spirit Egg

“Nooo! You don’t speak the name of the devil!” The little dark snake shook his snake head, “Messiah really IS my name!”Meph had no wish to talk to him anymore, but it was not his style to be a tricked customer: “Our contract was, you double ALL the rewards you missed. You failed to deliver, so the contract should be void.”The game panel paused a second, and Meph noticed —Being an emotionless sociopath, he understands when he gets tricked, but it doesn’t mean anger would cloud his judgment. He argued with the system because he wanted to see to what level the system could bend rules. He had no wish to let the system trick him again into a death trap like the Hollow Log. If the system tries to pull some “glitch” at every of his missions, then his game would be times harder, when it already had a sky-high death rate. But the game panel paused.Meaning the snake didn’t lie about the contract. He WAS bounded by SOME rules. Meph just had to figure those rules out.“Okay, I thought it was

“I didn’t lie! I never lie!” The snake hissed.Meph huffed condescendingly, “You know I can access your action log.”“Okay, fine, it wasn’t a glitch. It was the system; it wasn’t updated.” The snake lied without any hesitation yet again.Meph let out a light laugh.“Is that so?” Meph nodded understandingly, “That sounds dangerous. I think for the honor of the Trial, I should report this in the system and bring attention to this matter.”The snake flinched.Meph didn’t believe either of the snake’s explanations, but it was true that his system was way too old. Actually, one of the oldest versions, apparently. He had to dig all the way into its terminal to get its version info, and its system number was 029.How many systems had been activated? Well, that would be the same as asking how many “heroes” had joined the Trial. The number was huge, but it was just a number. A more intimate number that the public actually cared about was the death count, which was 8,980,972 when Meph joined.T

  • S&M Post Apocalypse   008 Consequences Of Lies

“Wait, wait, wait! I think the snake is gone!” Meph shouts, “flying” in the air like a flag the rabbit is dragging behind him.The rabbit ignores him.“I can’t keep up! I need to rest!” Watching the castle’s flag approaching him at a scary speed, Meph starts shouting, “I need to pee! I will pee like this if you don’t let go of me!”The rabbit finally stopped. Meph grabs onto the tree with his hand, feeling like throwing up from the bumpy ride. The rabbit is not letting Meph go, “Once we get into the castle, you will be granted with an attendance of a bathroom.”How nice of you. Meph rolls his eyes in his mind. He surely will get that, that and an executioner for his head!“I need to pee now!” Meph hops with haste in his voice, “There is a house! Just give me five minutes and we will—”“Hat is not in his house now,” The rabbit glances at the two-floor little wooden house in gothic style, “We can’t just go in.”Hat? The Mad Hat? Meph was only finding excuses before, but now he really wa

  • S&M Post Apocalypse   007 I Regret My Lie

“Alice, will you please hurry?” The White Rabbit hops back the third time to Meph, hate glittering in his hollow eyes, “You don’t want to keep the Queen waiting!”Ever since the system recognized Meph as Alice, the rabbit has been visibly nicer to him, as if he doesn’t remember that Meph was a hero in his trial, but really is the cute little girl he once adored.Returning a tame smile, Meph walks even slower, “I know, I know. I’m cooperating, aren’t I?”He is not cooperating. He has tested several times --The rabbit couldn’t see his game panel. In fact, the rabbit doesn’t seem to be able to see the snake either. When Meph asked him how he thinks of the design of his “tattoo”, the rabbit replied, “A plain black wristband? How’s that any design?”That’s why Meph is taking his time playing around this new toy. The game panel has been useful. It was the system notification, “Alice found”, that helped him put everything together, and the missions have been informative, too.He has to get
