RYDER

“Dad, what are you doing?” I call out, Saturday morning as I am about to head to work.

My dad doesn’t even look up from where he is standing, pouring himself coffee like he hadn’t just been warned to avoid it a week ago. “Pouring myself breakfast,” he mutters.

“Dad,” I sigh, stepping back inside. “Caffeine is not breakfast and you know you can’t do that.”

That gets his attention. He turns, fixing me with a look. “Ryder, don’t dad me. I’m the parent, remember?”

“Then act like it,” I f

RYDER “Dad, what are you doing?” I call out, Saturday morning as I am about to head to work. My dad doesn’t even look up from where he is standing, pouring himself coffee like he hadn’t just been warned to avoid it a week ago. “Pouring myself breakfast,” he mutters. “Dad,” I sigh, stepping back inside. “Caffeine is not breakfast and you know you can’t do that.” That gets his attention. He turns, fixing me with a look. “Ryder, don’t dad me. I’m the parent, remember?” “Then act like it,” I fire right back. “Take care of yourself for once so I don’t have to.” He sighs, rubbing the back of his neck. “I will fix myself something healthy and I will take my meds. Happy now?” I hold his gaze for a second, making sure he means it. Then I nod once. “I will be when you actually do it.” “Fine” he mutters, pouring the coffee in the sink. Then, he scrutinizes me. “Are you going on a date or something?” “Why?” “Nothing about your outfit screams diner grease and milkshakes.” I shrug, tryin

CALLAThat evening at home, the environment feels worse than school ever did. The TV is already on for movie night. My dad sits on one end of the couch, his laptop open, his fingers moving across the keyboard like his life depends on it. He barely looks up when mom places snacks before him.I sink into the other end, tucking my legs under me. We used to do this all the time and it used to mean something. Now it just feels like we are all pretending. My mom tries. She laughs at the right moments and glances at us like she is hoping we will join in. I try to keep up but my dad doesn’t. After a while, I give up. I open Instagram on my phone and the feed is blowing up with posts from the party. Everyone is out there having fun while I’m stuck here being miserable. In one photo, Miles is shirtless and someone tagged him. I scroll through the comments.“God, he is so hot.”“Is that Ares? Save some of the god for the rest of us, Brina!”Right on cue, Brina’s comment sits at the top, accompa

By Friday afternoon, I am exhausted from pretending all week. Miles doesn’t notice. He wouldn’t anyway because his face is buried in Brina’s half the time. We are leaning against the lockers, the three of us like always. Brina is talking about something that happened to the basketball coach so practice is cancelled or something. I’m only half listening. My focus keeps drifting. My mind isn’t where it should be. It hasn’t been all week. “Are you coming to practice?” Miles asks suddenly, turning to me. I blink, pulling myself back. “Today?” “Yeah. We have got a scrimmage. It starts in a few minutes and it would be nice to have two of my favorite people there. Then we can ride home together later.” For a second, I want to say yes. I want to fall back into our easy "tradition"; sitting in the stands, watching him own the ice, feeling like I belong somewhere in his world... But then reality settles back in. “I can’t,” I say, forcing my voice to stay light. “I have tutoring.” His exp

CALLA Every corner of Blackridge High seems designed to make me run into Ryder, and every time I catch a glimpse of him, my stomach knots. Miles doesn’t leave my side every time we are outside class. He is protective like a shield I can’t quite escape. It should feel comforting. But it doesn’t. It’s dangerous because my mind keeps running to the same space, but it’s better than having to deal with Ryder. But that lasts so long. I spend the day moving classes strategically, ignoring stares, dodging whispers. The hallway feels narrower every time someone slows to look at me. Rumors spread like wildfire, and I have done nothing to stop them. I shouldn’t care but I do.Finally, tutoring hour comes. There is no avoiding him now. I set my bag down, careful to keep my distance and sit. Ryder is not fazed. He leans back in his chair, calm, but with the same teasing glint in his eyes that made my heart lurch this morning.“You really aren’t going to say anything?” His voice is quiet, intent

CALLAMiles doesn’t let go of me immediately. Even after the nurse wraps my ankle and says it’s just a minor strain, even after I insist I can walk, his hand stays at my waist like I might fall apart without him. It’s familiar and comforting. But dangerous.“You scared me back there,” he says quietly. My heart stumbles. “I’m fine. You heard the nurse.”“I know,” he murmurs, but his grip tightens just slightly, like he needs to feel that I am.I glance up at him, and that’s my mistake. He is looking at me the way he used to. Soft, like I matter more than anything else in that moment. It pulls me in instantly, as always.“You shouldn’t be around him,” Miles adds, his tone shifting just enough to break the spell. “I told you, Cal. He is not right.”My chest tightens. “It wasn’t—” I stop myself because if I finish that sentence, I have to tell the truth that I leaned in first. That for one second, I wanted it. “I don’t have a choice, Miles. You know that.”“I don’t like it.” Miles presses

RYDERMiles’ voice cuts through the quiet of the rink like a blade. I snap my head toward it, and so does she. Miles stands there tall and infuriatingly perfect, his eyes sharp and furious. For a split second, I see exactly why everyone worships him. That aura, that effortless control presses down on me, making my chest tighten. Calla stiffens beside me and I can feel her panic radiating before it even hits her face. She jerks back and pulls away. I taste the sudden sting of rejection, not from her, but from the fact that Miles’ presence alone can make everything I have been trying to reach crumble. She loses her footing. I lunge, trying to catch her, but she yanks away. She hits the ice with a thud that reverberates in my chest. I bite back a curse.“Calla!” I hiss, rushing toward her. My hands hover, ready to help, but she inches away before I can reach her. She glares at me her eyes wide and full of panic.“Don’t... don’t touch me!” Her voice is so harsh echoing across the empty ri
