Kael stood at the bottom of the staircase for a long moment, staring at the steps like they might answer the question fighting inside his head. Lucian and Aaron stayed quiet behind him. Neither of them tried to rush him again. They had already said enough. The rest was up to him.

Lucian finally spoke,

You’re still stalling.

Kael didn’t look back. “I’m thinking.”

Aaron leaned against the table, Thinking won’t change anything kael

Kael’s jaw tightened. “You don’t know it’s her.”

Lucian shrugged slightly. “Then prove it isn’t.”

Silence settled again.

Kael knew what they were asking him to do. He also knew why he didn’t want to do it. Because if they were right, the girl upstairs was not just another victim who had been dragged into his life.

She would be connected to the one place he had spent years trying to erase from his mind.

Kael exhaled slowly and finally started walking toward the stairs.

Lucian didn’t follow. Aaron didn’t either.

This part belonged to Kael alone.

The hallway upstairs was dim and quiet. The house had settled into that strange silence that came late at night when everyone else was asleep. Kael stopped outside Vera’s door. His hand rested on the handle, but he didn’t open it immediately.

For the first time since Aaron showed him that mark, doubt crept in.

What if it wasn’t her?

What if he was about to scare her for nothing?

He pushed the door open.

The room was softly lit by a lamp on the bedside table. Vera was awake, sitting against the headboard with the blanket pulled around her waist. Her hair was slightly messy like she had been running her hands through it. When she saw him step inside, her expression shifted from surprise to something more cautious.

You......you are back.”

Kael closed the door quietly behind him.

“Yes.”

She studied his face carefully. “Are you still angry?”

He walked further into the room but didn’t answer right away.

“I already apologized,” she added after a moment.

Kael stopped beside the bed, not saying anything

Vera noticed and raised her hands defensively. “Look, I know you think I’m reckless or whatever, but you can’t just lock someone in a mansion with guards and expect them not to ask questions.”

“You weren’t locked in.”

She gave him a look. “There were literally two armed men watching the front gate.”

Kael didn’t respond.

Vera shifted under the blanket and watched him more closely. “Something’s wrong.”

His gaze lifted to her.

“You’re acting strange.”

“Am I?”

“Yes. Even for you.”

Kael moved closer to the bed.

Vera immediately noticed the change in distance. Her back pressed slightly deeper into the pillows.

“You’re staring again,” she said quietly.

“Maybe you should stop giving me reasons to.”

Her brows pulled together. “That sentence still doesn’t make sense.”

Kael ignored the comment. His eyes moved slowly across her face, studying her reactions, the small movements she made when she was nervous.

Vera crossed her arms under the blanket. “Okay. Now you’re definitely making this weird.”

Kael rested one hand on the mattress beside her.

The movement brought him closer.

Vera felt it instantly. Her breathing slowed slightly.

“Kael.”

“What?”

“You’re doing that thing again.”

“What thing?”

“Standing too close.”

He didn’t move back.

“You noticed.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She frowned. “You’re impossible.”

Kael tilted his head slightly, watching her more carefully now. “You’re nervous.”

“Anyone would be nervous with you hovering like this.”

“You weren’t nervous earlier.”

“That was before you almost crushed my throat.”

A small pause filled the room.

Kael’s expression shifted slightly, something darker passing through his eyes.

“You’re still alive,” he said quietly.

“That’s a low bar for comfort.”

For a moment neither of them spoke. The tension in the room slowly changed. It wasn’t just frustration anymore.

It was something heavier.

Something neither of them was addressing directly.

Vera cleared her throat. “So… why are you really here?”

Kael looked at her.

“I needed to check something.”

Her brows pulled together again. “Check what?”

He didn’t answer.

His gaze moved downward briefly, studying the neckline of her shirt before returning to her eyes.

Vera noticed immediately.

Her grip tightened slightly on the blanket.

“Okay,” she said slowly. “Now I’m concerned.”

“Relax.”

“That’s not helping.”

Kael leaned a little closer.

Close enough that she could feel the warmth from his body.

Vera swallowed.

“Kael.”

“Yes?”

“If you’re planning something strange you should probably explain first.”

His mouth almost curved into a smile. “Strange?”

“You’re staring at my shoulders like they hold the secrets of the universe.”

“Maybe they do.”

“That was not funny.”

His eyes softened slightly, but the intensity didn’t leave.

“You trust me?” he asked suddenly.

The question caught her off guard.

“Do I have a choice?”

“Yes.”

She studied his face carefully.

Kael didn’t look like he was joking.

After a moment she sighed.

“…I think so.”

That answer seemed to settle something in him.

His hand lifted slowly.

Vera’s body tensed automatically.

He noticed.

His voice dropped slightly. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

Her eyes stayed on his hand as it moved closer.

His fingers stopped beside her shoulder, hovering for a second before lightly touching the fabric of her shirt near the collar.

The contact made her inhale softly.

Kael noticed.

His voice lowered even more. “Relax.”

She tried, but the way he was watching her made it difficult.

“What are you doing?” she asked quietly.

“Looking.”

“For what?”

He didn’t answer.

His fingers slid slightly beneath the edge of the fabric.

Vera’s heartbeat sped up.

“Kael…”

“Yes?”

“If this is some strange power move, I’m going to push you off this bed.”

He gave a quiet breath that almost sounded like a laugh.

“That would be entertaining.”

“Don’t test me.”

Kael’s eyes met hers again.

“Trust me.”

She hesitated, searching his expression.

There was something serious there. Something heavier than whatever game she thought he might be playing.

Slowly she nodded once.

“…Fine.”

Kael carefully pulled the collar of her shirt slightly to the side.

Just enough to reveal the skin near her shoulder.

The room grew very quiet.

Vera frowned slightly at the sudden intensity in his eyes.

“Kael?”

He didn’t respond.

His gaze was focused completely on her skin.

Searching.

Waiting.

Vera shifted slightly under the weight of that stare.

“What exactly are you looking for?”

Kael’s mind drifted for a moment.

Cold rooms, Children lined against walls, A man with a knife marking skin like cattle

His breathing slowed, Because in that moment, he realized something.

If she had survived that place… if she had gone through the same trials…

Then the girl sitting in front of him was far more dangerous than anyone in this house realized.

Vera noticed the change in his expression.

“Kael… you’re scaring me a little.”

He finally blinked and looked back at her face.

For a moment they just stared at each other again.

The tension between them had shifted completely now.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them moved.

Kael’s fingers were still holding the edge of her collar.

Vera’s POVIt had been a few days since everything happened between me, Kael, Lucian, Aaron… all of it.And everyone was pretending to be normal.Pretending. That was the best word for it.I was avoiding Kael.So I kept myself busy. From the garden in the morning, to the library in the afternoon, to the kitchen at night like cooking would somehow silence my head.It didn’t.And Lina…I wasn’t sure about Lina. One moment I felt like she was just a girl stuck in the middle of chaos she didn’t ask for.The next moment I remembered what she did.So I kept my distance.Safer that way.Or at least I told myself it was safer.Aaron was the bigger silence though. He had left with Lucian days ago and nobody really spoke about it after. No updates. No jokes. No annoying presence in the hallways.Just gone. And I hated that I noticed. That morning I was in the kitchen again, baking something I wasn’t even planning to eat, just because the heat and smell distracted me from thinking too much.Flou

Aaron’s POVI should’ve stayed in my room. That thought hit me halfway down the hallway, just before Lucian’s office door came into view. Too late now. The door was already open.He was inside, standing by the window, back to me, sleeves rolled up, phone in his hand. Calm. Controlled. Like he didn’t just spend the morning dismantling me piece by piece without raising his voice.I stepped in anyway.“Close the door.”I did. The click echoed louder than it should have.He didn’t turn immediately. Just finished whatever he was reading, set the phone down, then finally looked at me. And just like that—everything from last night came rushing back again.Talk, he said.I let out a breath, You didn’t answer me.His brow lifted slightly, You didn’t give me the chance.I stepped closer, frustration building fast now. “I said something I’ve been holding in for thirteen years, Lucian. Thirteen. And your response is to drag me to the gym, ignore me for an hour, and act like—”“Like what?” he cut

  • SAY MY NAME, WHEN YOU BREAK    CHAPTER 58

Aaron’s POV I woke up with my heart in my throat. Wrong ceiling. Wrong sheets. Wrong everything. Lucian’s room. And Lucian. He was on his side facing me, one arm under the pillow, breathing slowly and Shirtless. That dragon tattoo on his ribs rose and fell inches from my face. The one I’d stared at for thirteen years and never touched. _No. No no no._ Last night hit me like a freight train. The club. The car ride. The whiskey I never should’ve touched because I’m a lightweight idiot. His hand on my knee. “Talk to me, Aaron. You’ve been off all night.” And me — me with a mouth full of alcohol and years of shit I’d swallowed — just _breaking_. _I’ve loved you for Thirteen fucking years, Lucian. Since I was 11 and stupid. Since before I knew what it felt like to want someone who looks right through me. You happy? You got what you wanted?”_ I didn’t even remember his reaction. Because I passed out. Right there. In his arms. Like a damn amateur. Now it was morning. I

  • SAY MY NAME, WHEN YOU BREAK    CHAPTER 57 (18+)

Vera’s POV The third shot hit different. Or maybe it was the bass. Or the way Aaron had stopped pretending he wasn’t scanning the crowd every 30 seconds like he was waiting for hell to walk through the door. Lina was already gone. Passed out on the leather couch, hair fanned out, mouth open. Dead to the world. “Lightweight,” Vera muttered, taking another sip. The alcohol burned, but not enough. Aaron smirked, but it didn’t land. His jaw was tight. He hadn’t touched his drink in 10 minutes. “We shouldn’t have left the house" “Too late,” Vera said. “You made your point.” He looked at her then. Really looked. “Did I?” Before she could answer, the air changed. You feel it in places like this. When the predator enters the room. The crowd doesn’t know why they’re parting — they just do. Aaron went rigid. Vera didn’t need to turn around. She knew. Kael. And Lucian. With their bodyguards. Lucian & Aaron Lucian didn’t say anything at first. He just walked up to the table, eyes

  • SAY MY NAME, WHEN YOU BREAK    CHAPTER 56

Vera’s POV The moment the guard left, the room went quiet again. Aaron leaned back slightly, watching her. Vera tilted her head just a little. That same look passed between them again. Lina saw it and immediately shook her head. “No.” Neither of them answered. “…No,” she repeated, stepping back like distance alone would save her. “I don’t like that silence. That silence means something stupid is about to happen.” Aaron exhaled slowly, dragging a hand over his jaw. “You say ‘stupid’ like it’s not relative.” “It’s not relative,” Lina shot back. “With you two, it’s always stupid.” Vera pushed off the chair, stretching slightly like she was just getting comfortable instead of planning something illegal under house arrest. “Relax.” “I don’t trust that word when it comes from you,” Lina replied immediately. “That sounds personal.” “It is personal,” Lina said flatly. “I just got my life back. I’m trying to keep it.” Aaron huffed out a quiet laugh, then glanced at Vera. “We can’

  • SAY MY NAME, WHEN YOU BREAK    CHAPTER 55

Vera's POV Vera stood near the window, arms folded, staring out at the compound. Guards everywhere. “Yeah,” Aaron’s voice came from behind her, lazy but sharp underneath, “I counted twelve just from here.” She didn’t turn. “There were six earlier.” “Exactly.” She exhaled slowly. “So we’re officially prisoners now.” “Soft version,” he said. “With better furniture.” That pulled a small breath out of her. Not quite a laugh. She turned, leaning her shoulder against the wall. “You tried leaving?” He tilted his head slightly. “I looked like I was going to try leaving.” “And?” “They stopped me before I even got close to the gate.” She raised a brow. “Stopped you how?” Aaron sat up a little straighter, mimicking the guard’s tone. “Sir, with all due respect, you’re not permitted beyond this point.” She folded her arms tighter. “And you listened?” He gave her a look. “Do I look like I listened?” That almost made her smile. “What did you do?” she asked. “I as

The office felt different after the message. Not louder. Not chaotic. Quieter. Aaron watched Kael stand by the window, phone still in his hand, city lights reflecting faintly against the glass. He hadn’t spoken in almost two minutes. That was never good. “They said take,” Aaron said finally.
