Chapter 17
" I need to talk to you." She forced out, scared to bits. Gerald scoffed, glaring at her.
" About what? I thought we said all that needed to be said last night." He muttered. Serena shook her head, forcing air down her lungs.
" Not at all. It's why I need to talk to you. You've been avoiding me all day. But you can't avoid me if we're in the same room." She replied, her voice as calm as ever. Gerald was getting irritated just listening to her.
" Well, I choose to avoid you. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go and use the bathroom." He said, his calm voice hiding the raging emotions he felt inside. The last thing he wanted was to attack this woman in a state of anger.
" I'm sorry Gerald…" she said anyway. " I'm sorry about how I ran away from you last night. I didn't mean to. I couldn't help it." She muttered, tears clouding her eyes.
Gritting his teeth, Gerald closed his eyes. God help him but this woman was threatening to drive him crazy.

Serena woke up with a sick feeling in her gut. Rubbing her aching muscles, she stifled a yawn. She barely got any sleep last night as she kept thinking of how to tell Gerald everything. Shaking her head as if to dislodge the thoughts, she slipped out of a bed. A knock came on her door, interrupting her. It creaked open and Lana peeked in. She relaxed. " Good morning, my lady." She greeted as she walked in. Serena murmured a reply. " Where's Gerald?" She asked as she ran her through her hair. " He's downstairs ma'am. It's almost time for breakfast." She informed Serena. Serena sighed, glancing at the large clock in the room. " I must've woken up late." She muttered to herself. " I need to hurry." She told the younger lady, who nodded in approval. " I'll help you run your bath." Lana said as she walked to the bathroom.

Days passed and Serena managed just fine. It wasn't easy, seeing her abuser everyday and having to act like she was unaffected but she did it. She made sure she was never alone and spent a lot of time with Gerald who seemed not to mind. She was eagerly waiting for the time Thomas would pack his things and leave because the week he had proposed was slowly coming to an end. She'd told herself she would survive as long as Gerald was by her side and that looked like the case. It looked like everything will turn out fine and Thomas would leave without making any contact with Serena. Until that day came. Gerald had received a letter from the Royal family asking for a meeting and all dukes had to be in attendance. Gerald was no exception. Serena spent the next days in fear, hiding from Thomas. She barely came out of her room and when she did, she was always with a maid or someone she could trust. She was eagerly waiting for the week to be over so Gerald could return from his trip. When the third day arrived, she didn't come out at all. She had expected Lana to bring her food just like she had been doing for the past few days so when noon arrived and Lana was nowhere to be found, she was immediately worried. Chapter 23 " You son of a bitch!" Gerald growled as he pushed Thomas off Serena, punching him in the face. " You bastard!" He growled, watching as blood transfusions trickled down his nose. Gerald stared ahead, his face drawn into hard lines as he watched the doctor inspect Serena who was still unconscious. He'd been terrified to death after she went limp in his arms and he thought for a moment that he'd lost her. He would never be able to forgive himself if he did.
