Lucien's expression went still. "They have him," He said quietly.

"And they're using him to make sure I come out," I said.

Theo stepped forward. "Where is this?"

"Facility K-9," I said. "The same place they took me."

Lucien looked at me. "We go," he said.

I nodded. There was no other choice but as we went to the car I felt it, a shift in my scent, uncontrolled and unwanted.

My Enigma pheromones were raising again and this time, I wasn't sure I could stop it. The car smelled like blo

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 47- The Hidden Room

I glanced toward the dark windows. No movement. No light. No scent of strangers beneath the damp rot of the place. Still, the open lock on the front gate lingered in my mind like a hand at my throat.Someone had been here.I pulled the flashlight from my pocket, clicked it on, and crossed the drive. The wooden porch sagged under my first step.I froze. The house groaned softly, but the boards held.I exhaled and continued, placing each foot with care.I set the flashlight between my teeth for a moment and searched for the key Councilor Varga gave me from my father's box. After a tense twist, it clicked. The sound was far too loud in the quiet.I pushed the door open, stale air rolled out to meet me.It carried layers of abandonment, dust, mold, old paper, dead flowers, and beneath all of it something faintly medicinal. Not fresh. A ghost of chemicals soaked into wood and plaster long ago.The scent tightened my stomach.Oh Anton.I stepped inside and closed the door behind me.The ent

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 46 - Lies And Shadows

LUCIEN POVI had lied.I had looked Rian in the eyes and said that I wouldn't look into anything, until my child was born.I noticed that Rian was too exhausted, his Enigma scent had been steady on the surface, but beneath it sat a sharp metallic thread of fear and exhaustion since the mention of the black crown.Fear for me, fear for the child.Fear that the past would keep reaching through locked doors and buried graves until it finally took something from us, that could not be given back. The moment he fell asleep.I stood in the dim hush of our bedroom, one hand braced against the edge of the dresser, the other pressed low beneath the heavy curve of my belly. The baby had been restless all evening, rolling turns that made my spine ache and my ribs feel too narrow. I was too heavily pregnant for secrets, too heavy for sudden movements.Yet the thought of doing nothing felt worse.A warm lamp glowed in the corner of the room, throwing amber light across the chair where Rian had left

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 45 - Anton's Letter

LUCIEN POVKael walked in first, behind him was councilor Varga. The moment I saw the older man, something inside me tightened. He looked tired and older.Rian stood."Varga."He nodded."Lucien."His eyes moved to my stomach briefly before returning to my face.Varga reached into his coat and removed a small wooden box, it was old, not expensive, not decorated.Just worn from years of being held. He placed it on the table. My heart stopped, because I recognized the handwritting carved into the top.Lucien.My fingers touched the wood. "No..."Varga looked at me sadly."Anton gave this to me."My throat tightened. "You had this all this time?""I was waiting.""For what?"His eyes moved to Rian. "Until you knew the truth."The room went silent, I opened the box, inside was a single envelope.I opened the letter. My dear Lucien,"If you are reading this, then I have failed to keep my promise."I stopped, a painful laugh escaped me. Even dead, my father was still apologizing."I promise

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 44 - Eli?

I didn't sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those three lines burned into my mind. Someone knew, not just about my pregnancy but about my baby. About something my father had spent decades trying to erase from history. Morning came slowly. Rain still covered the lake outside the estate, turning the water into a sheet of silver. I found Rian already awake. Of course he was, he stood in the kitchen making coffee that he never intended to drink. His untouched cup had already gone cold. "You didn't sleep," he said and looked over his shoulder. "Neither did you." "You promised the doctor." "So did you." For a moment, neither of us smiled, then, unexpectedly, we both did. It was small but real. A knock interrupted the silence. Kael walked in without waiting for permission. "You two are impossible," I said. Behind him came Theo, carrying a paper bag filled with breakfast. "I brought food," Theo announced. Kael frowned. "What did I do?" Theo asked.

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 43 - The Sovereign

LUCIEN POVThe words refused to leave my head. The Black Crown.I had never heard the name before, yet the fear in Rian's eyes when he spoke it unsettled me more than the attack itself. He wasn't afraid for himself, he was afraid for our child.None of us spoke. The storm outside raged until dawn, rain pounding against the windows of the estate while silence filled the dining room.Kael stood by the fireplace, reading through reports from the Task Force.Theo sat beside me with a blanket over his shoulders, absently rubbing his own stomach while Rian stood by the window, staring into the darkness beyond the lake, like he expected something to come out of the rain. Finally Kael tossed the report onto the table. "The bodies are confirmed."Rian looked over. "All twenty?"Kael nodded. "And the brands are the same."Rian closed his eyes. "Damn it..."I looked between them. "Will someone tell me what the Black Crown is or what they want?"No one answered immediately, even Theo looked confu

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 42 - The Wound Beneath

LUCIEN POVMorning arrived quietly. After everything that had happened the night before, the silence felt unnatural.I opened my eyes to pale sunlight spilling through the bedroom curtains. Every muscle in my body ached, my lower back throbbed, my stomach felt heavy and the baby shifted lazily beneath my palm as if reminding me that I wasn't alone anymore."You picked a terrible time to start kicking," I murmured. The movement stopped for a moment, then another tiny flutter.Despite everything, I smiled.A soft knock came from outside."Lucien?" Theo called gently. "Are you awake?""Yes."The door opened just enough for Theo to peek inside, he looked exhausted but he still managed a small smile. He stepped inside carrying a tray, toast, fruit and tea. Nothing that would upset my stomach."I made breakfast," he said.I stared at the burnt toast. "You definitely did."Theo laughed and set the tray beside me before lowering himself carefully into the chair. His own belly was way bigger t

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 9 - Breach

RIAN POV The alarm didn't scream, it humed. I was awake before it finished its first cycle, that's what years of running does to you. Lucien was already on his feet, gun in hand, moving toward the door. Kael was outside, shouting orders I couldn't hear through the reinforced steel. "Stay

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 8- Moving Targets

RIAN POV Dawn came too fast. No sunrise through the safehouse windows, just the artificial grey of pre-dawn and the low hum of the city waking up without us. Lucien had the car idling out back by 5:12 Kael was already checking out the main exits, moving like a man who had slept with one eye o

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 7- Quiet Before

The safehouse did not feel safe. It was too small, too bare - one bed, one bathroom, a kitchenette that looked like it had not been used in years, Voss Biotech owned a dozen of places like this. Lucien called it off-grid and I called it a gilded cage with better locks. Theo was two rooms down, s

The Voss gala wasn't meant for people like me. Crystal chandelier bled light over marble floors, men in tailored tuxedos and women in gowns that cost more than my rent, moved like the own the air, I hate it but hate didn't pay the rent and Voss Biotech paid triple for off the- books medic.
