Laila's POV

The morning sun had barely slipped through the tall glass windows when I walked into the dining hall. I’d hardly slept, pacing the room all night. The thing I saw weighed heavy on my chest. Lawrence deserved to know he was sleeping beside a snake.

The long table was getting set as I stepped in, silverware gleaming, the smell of roasted meat and honey bread filling the air.

I was the first one there. Alex came in next then Kayla she didn't come with her friend.

Which complicated things.

Soon after, they arrived together—Alpha Lawrence and his wife. He was smiling, walking without his cane, the strength in his stride proof of my healing. His wife clung to his arm, her eyes viscous as they looked in my direction.

“Good morning,” Lawrence greeted warmly. “You look well, Lady Laila.”

“Good morning Alpha.” I said, forcing a smile. “I needed to speak with you. It’s important.”

“Sure of course,” he said expectant but I glanced nervously at his wife.

Laila's POV As the torch came closer, the heat seared my skin even before the flames touched the wood. Kayla’s face blurred behind it, her lips moving, but I couldn’t hear the words anymore. My mind was slipping, scattering into pieces. It was true what they said in your last moments, your life flashes before your eyes. The memories of the orphanage, my wedding day, my wedding night, the letters I was writing, it all came back. The goodbye message, the suicide note even the divorce papers it was all me. I wrote and signed everything.I was trying to protect Damien. But everything started far before that.Fiona.She had returned to the pack, now helping in the infirmary. My husband's first lover happened to show up with nothing but good intentions and I was told to look past it.I did at first, I told myself I was overthinking it. But one night, I saw the truth.I had gone to the infirmary only to see my worst fears come true.Fiona. Damien.Their lips pressed together. My heart stopp

Laila's POV A heavy heart. That was all that remained after the anger that once burned in me had gone out, leaving only the smoke of what used to be fire. I pressed a hand against my chest, the twisting ache refused to let me breathe properly.I would never get to see him again. I would never get to hold him. What could be worse than that?Through my blurry gaze, I could still see his pretty wide blue eyes, his chubby cheeks and the sounds of his giggles and cries.“How did you die?” I whispered to the empty dungeon. “Were you scared? Were you crying for me?”My voice broke on the last word. I tilted my head back and stared at the cracks in the ceiling, counting them so I wouldn’t have to count the seconds I’d failed to protect him. I wondered who had really done it. Fiona? Or Kayla? Maybe both. Maybe none of them. Maybe the world just hated me enough to make sure I lost the only thing that mattered.Revenge had felt like purpose for a while. But now, even the thought of it was ho

Laila's POV I stood frozen beside Kieran’s bed, my hands hovering over him, and the question burned in my mind. How could this happen? “Alex… what happened to him?” I asked, voice barely above a whisper, raw with disbelief. He shook his head slowly, running a hand through his hair. “I… I’m not sure, Laila. I found him like this. We called in the seer, she couldn’t help him.”I swallowed hard, my heart tightening. “His… his sister?” I choked out. “It was her. The same sister he spoke of, the one he was so proud of. He claimed he would have never turned his back on her, and yet she… she’s ready to sacrifice him for her… her taste for power.” My voice cracked, raw with anger and betrayal. I felt bile rise, but I pushed it down, focusing on the bed before me.Alex exhaled slowly, his eyes scanning me as if trying to gauge what I was capable of. He could sense I had changed. “I’ve seen you heal people, Laila,” he said carefully. “Maybe you… maybe you can help him.”I looked at him, feeli

I shook my head violently, refusing to accept his words. “You’re lying,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “You’re joking. You have to be joking.”Rashford’s eyes softened as he held me gently. “Laila… don’t cry. Please, don’t…”I pushed away from him, my hands trembling. “Don’t say that rubbish! My baby he’s safe! He has to be!”He hesitated, then took a deep breath. “You can see for yourself.”“What do you mean?” I demanded, panic rising in my chest. He didn’t answer, only motioned for me to follow. Taking in a breath I followed and we got into the car. Every scenario played in my mind. When we arrived, Rashford stopped the car and gestured to the scorched remains of an accident. Charred wood and blackened wheels smoldered faintly, smoke curling into the air. I froze, the acrid smell stinging my nose.I stepped forward, almost in a trance, my eyes scanning the wreckage. Then I saw it—a small piece of fabric, but unmistakably a fragment of my baby’s blanket. I sank to my knees, the pi

Laila's POV “Finally, you’re back.” a feminine vibe drawled behind me. Kayla walked towards us dressed in a royal red clothes.“Please,” I began, my voice trembling. “Don’t take him. He’s just a baby! Damien and Fiona don’t care, they’re going to start a war. He’s in danger Please, Kayla, I beg you.”Alex’s hand tightened on my arm, and he muttered under his breath, “Kieran’s back. Why are you acting like you're in control?”I glanced at him, hope flaring briefly. “Alex, you have to do something! She can’t—she can’t take him!”Kayla tilted her head, studying me like a predator examining prey. “Control is not given, it’s earned. And the people have chosen. They follow me.”“People don’t decide the life of a child!” I snapped, tears blurring my vision. “He’s my son! You can’t—he’s innocent in all of this!”She laughed softly, a sound that made my stomach twist. “Innocent? Life is never innocent. Your child is a pawn in a larger game. Kieran has softened, acted foolishly, but I… I am st

Laila's POV I woke early, the butterflies in my belly made me uncomfortable. My fingers trailed to my lips. Last night's memory visited me even in my dreams.I squealed quietly like a girl on Christmas morning still in disbelief. After the kiss I ran back into the hut so fast like my life was in danger. My feelings were all over the place as I thought what it meant now.The warm feeling melted when I thought about my baby. He was still under the mercy of Kayla. I had to go get him.I stretched out of the spare bed heading into the main room, where the sight of Kieran made my heart skip a beat. The healer handed me a simple meal and water for the road. “Eat,” she said, her voice firm, leaving no room for argument. “You’ll need your strength.”I took the food, nodding quietly. She watched me for a moment, then her gaze softened slightly. “Laila,” she said, “if you want to reach your full potential… you have to awaken your wolf.”I froze mid-bite, staring at her. “Wolf?” I echoed, incre
