Mag-log inLaila POV
Shit!!! How could I forget that he was always lurking around Fiona? He beamed at me, his smile lecherous and sickening and then he threw me on the floor. I knew that I couldn't beg because of this perverted monster, pleading excitedly and making him go feral. I looked around trying to find something to use to escape but I couldn't spot anything. He seemed to have seen my movements as she spoke. “Thinking of escaping? Dream on. You hurt my mistress so you deserve to die just like your child.” He then licked his lips slowly. “Don't worry, I won't make it as quick as when I killed your child. It'll be slow and torturous and each moment will make you wish for death.” Hearing that his hand killed my child, rage, hatred and heartaches filled me and I screamed with agony as I glared at him, tears beginning to stream down my face. He didn't take my actions to be anything as he smirked and then raised his hand to strike down at me. Before he could touch me though, he froze, his eyes widening comically. He looked down at his chest and my gaze followed only for horror to fill me when I saw that right in the center was a gaping hole where his heart was meant to be. Still unable to believe he was killed like that, Donovan collapsed to the flood, bleeding out, with his eyes wide open in shock. I stared at his corpse and then looked back up to where he had been standing. I flinched back in shock when I saw that someone was standing there. A ruggedly handsome man with silver hair was standing there, his head tilted to the side in confusion. My eyes widened when I noted that the man's hand was holding out Donovan's already stale heart which was coated and dripping with blood. I gulped and froze, unsure what the hell was happening. A look of enlightenment crossed the stranger's eyes and he suddenly inched closer to me before squatting, making our eyes level. “Mate.” He declared, his voice firm and without any uncertainty. I stared at him in confusion at first unable to understand why he was suddenly calling me mate but I soon gaped at him when I felt it. The empty and hollow feeling from when Damien rejected me was gone. Now, it was replaced with a thrumming fire and I could almost feel the familiar yet unfamiliar pull towards this stranger. This man who had appeared so suddenly and brutally killed Donovan in just a strike was my mate. “Y..y..you.. you” I was unable to piece together a sentence as I kept stuttering. “Cute.” He said, his lips curving into a blinding smile while my mind went haywire. What the hell was happening? Just then, the pitter patter of numerous feets echoed in the room and my heart dropped to my feet as I noted that Damien and Fiona had caught up and they had also brought a few guards along with them. Shit! I should have run. How can I escape now? “That's her! Take her and kill her before she runs again.” Fiona suddenly shouted, her shrill voice echoing in the room. I winced. I didn't notice that the stranger's face had hardened visibly as I was still thinking of a way to escape. It was only when he rose to his full height that I paid attention to him. He glared at Fiona with a gaze that spoke volumes of how he wanted to kill her. “You want to touch my mate? I would like to see with which guts you would be able to.” He declared sneering and if it were in another scenario, I would have felt warm at being protected but after everything I couldn't bring myself to feel anything especially when I noted that Damien and Fiona had the advantage in numbers. “Who the hell do you think you are? Guards, kill him too.” Fiona ordered. “Kill me?” The stranger scoffed and then he released his aura. It was suffocating and immediately made me want to kneel and submit but it was obviously not directed at me which showed how powerful it was. Damien's eyes widened. “L..ly…ly..ly” he kept stuttering while shivering in fear, unable to piece together a single word. My brows furrowed as I looked at the stranger in confusion. For the normally cool and collected Damien to be this flustered, who was this man? “Lycan Kieran.” Damien finally spat out and then he immediately fell to his knees not forgetting to drag Fiona too. My mind immediately blanked out. Lycan Kieran? Lycan? As in the supreme ruler of all werewolves? The one who is above all Alphas? My eyes widened dramatically. What the fuck was going on?Laila’s POV“Wait… I froze when she rushed to block the doorway staring at the paper in her hand with a cunning look in her eye.I clutch the book closer to my chest as I took a step back, almost tripping on some broken wood but caught my balance at the last minute.“What do you want?” I muttered, eyeing her suspiciously. She looked back at me, her eyes resting on the book.“You’re leaving already? I thought you wanted to try the resurrection spell”“I can help you find the spell,” she said, already leaning slightly forward, fingers stretching toward the book.“Don’t touch it.” The words snapped out of me before I even thought. Her eyebrows lifted. “I’m only offering help.”“Help?” I stepped away, keeping her from the book. “Everyone else gives warnings. They all say the same thing—‘it’s dangerous, but you…” I pointed at her. “You’re the only one who actually encourages it. You’re the only one pushing me to try it.”She exhaled slowly, amused. “And that alarms you?”“It makes me wonde
Laila’s POVSometimes the heaviest part of grief is the silence it leaves behind.I sat on the shore long after the mermaid left, my heart numb and I felt a bit overwhelmed. What was my purpose?I used to strongly believe everyone had a reason for being created but as I sat there, I wasn't so sure.Just like background characters in a movie, maybe some of us were just fillers to the main character’s story.I stared at the rippling surface, uselessly waiting for someone to tell me what to do next. What was the next part of the script?I got what I wanted, my powers and hell a book that might be able to help… but now I was scared to use them.I couldn't get my baby.Theron would forever hate me.I made a vow to break the mermaid's curse while all the same have limited time to return the book to avoid another curse. And the hardest part were the people that had to die for these powers. It was easier to avoid it before, but now I have seen their faces and seen others who got affected… I c
Laila's POV “Ohhhh… the plot thickens,” the mermaid’s voice cut through the tension, almost delighted. My heart dropped as I watched the light fade from his eyes as the last fragments of the woman’s face faded into nothing.Theron didn’t step back. He stood rooted at the edge of the lake, fists shaking, chest rising unevenly. His expression wasn’t shock anymore. It was anger. He stared at the water like he wanted to tear it in half. “Was that true?” he demanded. “Did you kill her?”“What? No—Theron, I told you, I don’t remember everything but I didn’t kill—”“You didn’t kill anybody,” he snapped, mocking my tone. “That’s what you keep saying. You don't mean to hurt anybody but that’s what you do. First my brother, now my mother—”“I didn’t—” My voice cracked, and the panic rising inside me felt like a physical hand squeezing my ribs. “I don’t remember killing anyone. I swear to you.”He moved toward me so fast the wind stung my cheeks. His hand shot up, fingers curled like claws, his
Laila's POV “I have every right to be mean, to taunt you, to even kill as I please and say no to your requests.” She continued as if her tone wasn’t sharp before, it echoed now.“So there’s no way for you to leave this place at all?” Theron asked.“There is a way,” she answered, flicking her tail. “But I doubt either of you are foolish enough to take it. I can only leave if someone willingly replaces me. Someone who chooses to be bound to the lake in my place.”Theron and I both snapped our heads toward each other. There was no way we would accept the deal.I came for my baby.He came for his brother. We both had who we had to watch out for and spending eternity as a mermaid in a place I couldn't protect or get to hold my child was worse than him being dead. Before either of us could speak, the mermaid made a sharp unimpressed sound. “I don't blame you, don't judge me too. I’m done granting favors for free. Wolves come with desperate requests, offering nothing, except lies and false
Laila’s POVOne time I would have told her she was lying, that I had no blood on my hands, but as my lips trembled to say I didn’t do it the face of that lady hunted me.The mermaid cocked a brow and I watched her smile grow.“You’re clueless?” She sounded amused. “How is that possible?”My hands felt clammy and I shook my damp hair.“I don’t know what you are talking about,”She slid silently across the water before reaching me as close as she could.“Oh but you do know what I’m talking about, you're a terrible liar I can see if in your eyes, I have no idea why you act like I'm lying.”“What is she talking about?” Theron questioned and I blinked looking in his direction trying to act unfazed.“I… I couldn't even defend myself.“Don't you see darling,” The mermaid floated just at the surface, her tail curling lazily through the black water. Her eyes glowed a faint, eerie white as she stared at me.“She’s a murderer and a liar,” she said flatly. “I am not a murderer,” I blurted weak
Laila’s POV“Whoa,” I voiced in awe, her skin glistening even in the dark lake, her luscious red hair falling in waves pooling down to the meeting of her green tail.My breath caught as I took in the shimmer of her green tail, the red waves of hair floating around her shoulders. This… this was real. A mermaid, right in front of me.Creatures you only see in books and myths and I was standing right in front of one.She glanced in my direction, her eyes, pale as sclera, she looked so breathtaking, so poised, so unimaginably glorious… well that was until her expression turned dark. Her lips curved at the sides, her eyes flashing and before I could even blink, I felt something tug at my legs—something cold, slick, and impossibly strong.“Urh!” I gasped, but before I could finish, the world tilted. With insane force, I felt my legs jerk as the water surged up around me, dragging me forward with a violent splash. In one swift movement the lake swallowed me whole. My lungs were deprived of
