~SCARLETT.

"What do you mean you left?" Lily's fork, speared with a piece of bacon, froze midair. Her brows shot up in disbelief as she stared at me.

Sighing, I stabbed my pancake with unnecessary force. "Exactly that. I left."

We sat at one of the resort's outdoor restaurants, the ocean stretching endlessly before us. The salty breeze tangled with the scent of fresh coffee, but none of it soothed the restless heat still simmering beneath my skin.

I replayed the night over and over: the way my body betrayed me, craving more. It had been too much, so I ran.

Her lips twitched before she erupted into laughter, her head tilting back as she let out a loud cackle, drawing curious glances from the nearby tables.

Scowling, I stuffed a piece of pancake into my mouth. "It's not funny," I grumbled, my words muffled around the food.

"No, no… it's fucking hilarious," She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. "Scarlett, you sat there watching a

~SCARLETT.My son—the one I’d abandoned—has a knife at my throat. That single fact beat louder than my pulse, louder than the laughter drifting in from the backyard where everyone had been arguing minutes ago.He and I stared each other down: me half‑kneeling, dress trapped beneath his knees; him standing far too still, far too fierce for a three‑year‑old. A box‑cutter blade hovered in the soft hollow where my heartbeat fluttered.“Caleb,” I whispered, palms up in surrender. “Please put that down, sweetheart.”He didn’t so much as flinch. A gull screeched over the lake; floorboards creaked in the hall; Sylvia’s gravel laugh carried faintly—proof people were near, clueless.“Don’t scream,” he warned. “I cut if you scream.”“Okay.” I breathed. “No screaming.”Head tipped, he said, “You keep watching us. First outside our house, then at the barbecue with Lucas.”I fought for calm. “I’m not here to hurt anyone.”“Lucas never brings girls. Now he brings the weird lady with red hair.”Guilt

~SCARLETT. The air thinned. No… no, no, no. This wasn’t happening. It couldn’t be. My lungs seized. My heart stuttered, then collapsed into a frantic, gasping rhythm. The edges of the world blurred: colors bleeding together, sounds stretching and snapping like elastic. The ground felt miles below me. This isn’t real. My chest strained for air, but each inhale was like dragging breath through cloth. My eyes fluttered, refusing to land on anything. The backyard, the crowd, all of it smeared into chaos. A nightmare. Or worse… a punishment I hadn’t earned, but couldn’t escape. And then came the voices. Too many. Too close. Too loud. Too fast. “Red?” Lucas. Closer now. Gentle. A hand brushed my arm. “Hey… hey, are you okay?” My mind was blank. Words wouldn't come. “Is she alright?” someone asked behind him. “What’s wrong with her?” “Lucas, what’s going on?” “I don’t know!” he snapped, panic rising in his tone. I forced a single word out, barely audibl

~SCARLETT. God is a woman. No seriously, that’s the only explanation. Because after the hellstorm that was yesterday—the punch, the rage, the ball-clutching silence—I woke up this morning feeling like I could conquer the damn world. I don’t know what it was. Maybe it was the sight of him limping out of my house, clutching himself like I’d just ended his bloodline and erased his family tree. Maybe it was the rare thrill of seeing him take it without barking back: no shouting, no rage. Just... pain. Silent. Stunned. Deserved. He left without a word. And somehow, that silence was louder than anything he could’ve said. For once, I had the power. And God, I liked it. So when I woke up still high on that delicious, smug afterglow, “God is a woman by ARIANA GRANDE” started playing in my head, and I didn’t question a thing. I just let it soundtrack my morning. An hour later, I was suspended halfway up my pole, upside down in nothing but a black thong and six-inch heel

~LIAM. Pain. Fierce, pulsing, vindictive pain. It radiated through me like a curse as I doubled over, slipping from the couch and crashing onto my knees, hands instinctively guarding what was left of my dignity. Speechless, I stayed down: breath knocked out of me, furious, stunned, and aching in places a man should never ache. “This is the last time you ever lay a hand on me,” she said calmly, still seated like nothing had happened. “Next time, I won’t be so nice.” Air wouldn’t come. Thoughts scattered. But her voice pushed through the fog, clear and unshaken. “I think it’s time for you to leave now, neighbor.” That smile—smug, cold, satisfied—turned the word into a blade. Not a word left my mouth. What the hell could I possibly say? Still hunched, I pushed myself to my feet and exited the house. Every step sent a fresh wave of agony through me, but I didn’t stop until I crossed the street and nearly collided with the moving truck parked outside the

~SCARLETT. Can I be considered a bad person for playing with this kid’s emotions just to keep Liam in check? Maybe. Probably. Okay… yeah. Definitely. But if stringing Lucas along was the only thing keeping Liam from breaking through every boundary I’ve built… then so be it. Let him see I’ve moved on. Maybe then he’ll stop trying to claw his way back into my life. “You’ll what?” Liam and Lucas said at the same time. Lucas sounded thrilled. Liam sounded like he was about to start throwing furniture. I bit back a smile. Trust the universe to hand me not one, but two L-named headaches. Figures. Still smiling, I pushed to my feet and sauntered over to Lucas. “Yes,” I said, syrupy sweet. “I’ll go as your date.” I didn’t spare Liam a glance. Lucas lit up like a damn Christmas tree. Liam? He was radiating heat like a ticking bomb. Lucas, clearly reveling in it, threw Liam a smug glance, then turned back to me, grin still wide. “The barbecue’s tomorrow, around noo

~LIAM. I always thought I was a rational man. In all my thirty years of life, I’d never let jealousy crawl under my skin. Why would I? Relationships weren’t part of the plan. They were distractions. Messy, emotional time bombs I was trained to avoid. After Marcus pulled Jake, Kelvin, and me out of that hellhole at eighteen, everything became singular: serve the Foundation, bleed through the training, and rise to the top. Attachments? Never in the blueprint. Sure, I had flings. Easy. Forgettable. No mess. No risk. No one who mattered. So someone explain to me… Why did I have this burning urge to smash this kid’s face in? The moment I saw him holding her—like he had any fucking right—one thought lit my brain like wildfire: Another man was touching what was mine. And not just any man. The same little shit I’d punished her for grinding against. If she hadn’t pulled away when she did, I swear to fucking God, I would’ve shattered his jaw
