Chapter 103

"Meaning you're being watched," Lucien said bluntly. "Every move you make, every conversation you have, every place you go in this compound is being monitored and reported back to pack leadership."

"By you?" I guessed.

"By everyone," Lucien corrected. "This pack has long memories and no love for Karl or anyone associated with him, most wolves here would be happy to see you thrown out or worse, so I'd suggest you tread carefully and don't give anyone an excuse to act on their hostility."

"Is that a threat?" Alex asked while his voice dropped to something dangerous.

"It's advice," Lucien said. "Whether you choose to take it or ignore it is up to you, but don't say I didn't warn you when things inevitably go wrong."

He turned to leave but paused at the door and glanced back with something that might have been genuine concern flickering across his face.

"One more thing," he said. "Whatever you think you're going to find in those archives, whatever evidence you hope will clear

  • SHADOWBORN: The Rise Of The Dragon Wolf    JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL

Chapter 109NyxThe hours crawled by with agonizing slowness while I sat in that cell listening to the sounds of pack life continuing outside my prison, wolves going about their daily routines as if my world hadn't just imploded around me.The silver bars cast strange shadows across the stone floor as afternoon light filtered through the single high window, and I found myself tracing patterns in the dust while my mind refused to stop circling through the same questions over and over.Who had paid Marcus? Why frame me now when they could have simply waited for my investigation to go nowhere like it had been doing? What did they think I was close to discovering that warranted such a public and dramatic accusation? The sound of approaching footsteps made me look up expecting another guard or perhaps Alex returning with news, but instead I found Darius standing outside my cell looking every bit the concerned elder rather than the man whose story I'd been trying to dismantle."May I?" he a

  • SHADOWBORN: The Rise Of The Dragon Wolf    WHO I HAD TO CHALLENGE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Chapter 108NyxI wanted to punch him, wanted to shift and show these wolves exactly how powerful my scream was, but I ruthlessly suppressed both urges because revealing my dragon heritage now would only make things infinitely worse. The guards moved to either side of me and I felt their hands close around my arms with more force than necessary, clearly enjoying the opportunity to manhandle the traitor's daughter."Be gentle with her," Lucien ordered and there was something in his voice that suggested genuine concern beneath the disappointment. "She's still under my father's protection until proven guilty.""Of course, Alpha," one guard said while his grip loosened slightly. They started marching me toward the detention building while the crowd parted with expressions of disgust and vindication, and I held my head high despite the humiliation burning through me.*I'll fix this,* Alex sent through our bond. *I'll find proof you're innocent and get you out of there.**I know you will,*

  • SHADOWBORN: The Rise Of The Dragon Wolf    JUST LIKE YOUR FATHER CLAIMED TO BE NOBLE WHILE BETRAYING EVERYONE WHO TRUSTED HIM.

Chapter 107NyxThe crowd had grown larger and I could feel tension building as pack members reacted to Marcus's words with expressions ranging from shock to anger to something that might have been hope."This isn't the place," Lucien said while trying to defuse the situation. "Marcus, if you have concerns about historical accuracy then bring them to my father privately rather than causing a scene.""I tried that years ago," Marcus said while his voice carried across the gathered wolves. "Your father made it very clear that questioning Karl's guilt was the same as questioning his leadership."My heart pounded with anticipation because finally, finally someone was speaking up about the inconsistencies we'd been chasing for days, someone willing to publicly challenge the narrative that had painted my father as a traitor."Then maybe you should have stayed quiet," Simon suggested dangerously."Or maybe," Marcus said while his gaze found me in the crowd and something shifted in his expres

  • SHADOWBORN: The Rise Of The Dragon Wolf    YOU'RE SPREADING DANGEROUS MISINFORMATION

Chapter 106NyxLucien's expression flickered with something that might have been alarm before smoothing back into careful neutrality, and I realized I'd pushed too hard and revealed that we'd been paying closer attention to his contradictions than he'd expected."I never said it was a lie," he said while his voice carried a warning edge. "I said the records might have been adjusted, that's different from calling my father a liar.""Is it though?" Alex asked while studying Lucien's face with that intensity that suggested he was cataloging every microexpression. "If records were changed to fit a preferred narrative then someone was lying about what really happened.""You're putting words in my mouth," Lucien said while tension crept into his shoulders. "And I'd suggest you be more careful about accusations you can't prove, especially ones that implicate pack leadership.""We're not accusing anyone," I said quickly while trying to salvage the situation. "Just trying to understand why yo

  • SHADOWBORN: The Rise Of The Dragon Wolf    EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW IT'S A LIE?

Chapter 105Nyx"Maybe nothing," Alex suggested. "Maybe Karl was just in the way, obstacle to power that needed to be removed, or maybe there was something specific about Karl that threatened Darius in ways we don't understand yet."A knock at the door interrupted our conversation again we both tensed, because we don't know why they're always coming to our room. When Alex opened it we found a young woman this time, with kind eyes standing there holding a tray laden with food."Morning," she said with a shy smile. "I'm Emma, one of the staff. The Alpha asked me bring you some clothes.""Thank you," I said while gesturing her inside. "That's very thoughtful."She set the clothes down and lingered for a moment the same way Martha did, like she wanted to say something but wasn't sure if she should. I caught Alex watching her carefully while clearly wondering if this was genuine kindness or another test."Is there something else?" I asked gently."I just," Emma started then glanced at the

  • SHADOWBORN: The Rise Of The Dragon Wolf    BUT WHY WOULD HE FRAME HIS OWN BROTHER?

Chapter 104NyxI woke to sunlight streaming through the windows and the sound of movement outside our door, pack members beginning their daily routines with the kind of organized efficiency that spoke of years living together in close quarters.Alex was already awake, sitting by the window and watching the compound with the careful attention of someone cataloging potential threats and escape routes, and I felt his tension bleeding through our bond even though his face remained calm."Morning," I murmured while stretching muscles that were stiff from yesterday's emotional exhaustion. "How long have you been up?""Couple hours," he admitted while not taking his eyes off the scene below. "Wanted to get a feel for how this pack operates, their routines and patterns, might be useful if we need to move around without being noticed.""Find anything interesting?" I asked while joining him at the window."Simon makes rounds every hour like clockwork," Alex observed. "And there are always at l
