THE GHOST

The war room, as Marco calls it, used to be a spare office. Now it is a wall of photographs, red string, and printouts taped in careful, uneven rows.

Every scrap of Adrian Vale's life they have managed to scrape together, which, three days in, still is not much.

Elena stands in front of the wall, her arms crossed tight over her chest. Her eyes move slowly from one photograph to the next. There are only a handful.

A blurry image from a security camera. A driver's license photo from a state she has never visited.

A picture of a man who looks nothing like the Adrian she remembers from that day in the penthouse.

"He's a ghost," Marco says. He is standing back from the wall, arms crossed, exhaustion carved into every line of his face.

"Fake name on the apartment lease. Fake name on the car registration. Even his medical license traces back to a man who died fifteen years ago and never actually practiced psychology a day in his life."

"So who is he really?" Elena asks. She is staring at the one clear photograph they have.

Adrian in his soft gray sweater, glasses pushed up his nose, smiling like a man with absolutely nothing to hide. That smile still makes her stomach turn.

"We don't know yet." Marco steps forward and taps the edge of the photo, frustration sharp in his voice.

"But everyone leaves something behind eventually. We just haven't found it yet."

Dante leans over the table, scanning the documents spread across it for what feels like the hundredth time. His eyes are tired, but he does not stop moving.

"What about the shell company that paid for the apartment?" he asks.

"Dead end. Closed the same week his place was cleared out." Marco rubs a hand over his tired eyes. "He's careful, Dante. More careful than Victor ever was, and Victor had ten years to build his walls."

"Careful men still make mistakes." Elena's voice is steady despite the fatigue pulling at all of them.

She turns from the wall to face them. "Victor thought he was untouchable too, right up until Sofia handed us his own financial records."

"Victor wanted power." Marco shakes his head slowly. "That made him predictable. He needed people around him.

He needed a visible empire to actually enjoy any of it. Adrian doesn't need any of that. He can live in the shadows forever if that is what he wants."

He pauses, his voice dropping lower. "That is what scares me most about him."

Elena's stomach tightens at that. A cold, familiar dread settles low in her chest. She steps closer to the wall again, studying Adrian's photograph like it might finally give something up if she just stares hard enough, long enough.

"He wants an audience, though," she says slowly. "He told me that himself, practically, sitting right there on that couch.

He gets nothing out of hiding forever if no one is watching him do it. That is not who he is. That was never who he is."

"So he'll surface." Dante's eyes meet hers across the table, dark and serious.

"Eventually. Not on his own timeline, though, if we can help it." Elena turns to face them both fully now. Something determined hardens in her voice. "We need to give him a reason to come out sooner."

Marco frowns. He already senses where this is going. "You mean use yourself as bait."

"I mean use what he actually wants." Elena crosses her arms, holding her ground. "He wants to watch me fall apart.

He wants to see whether his work—erasing me, building Amara out of nothing but lies—actually held. Or whether I really came back all the way, whole, unbroken.

If we make it look like it is working, like I am cracking under the weight of the trial and everything else, he won't be able to resist getting closer to watch."

"Absolutely not." Dante's voice is flat, immediate, final. "We are not using you as bait for a man like that. Not now. Not ever."

"I didn't ask for your permission, Dante." Elena's voice does not waver. Though something gentler flickers underneath the firmness. "I'm telling you what he'll respond to. I know him. I lived under his control for ten years without even realizing it."

"It's too dangerous."

"Everything about my life is dangerous. I told you that already, the night we went after Victor." She steps toward him, softening slightly now, but still not backing down an inch.

"I'm not saying we do it today. I'm not saying we do it at all, necessarily. I'm saying we keep it as an option, quietly, in case every other trail runs cold."

Gabriel, silent by the window until now, finally speaks. "She's not wrong. Men like Adrian don't get caught by chasing them. You have to give them a reason to walk toward you instead."

"Thank you," Elena says, glancing at him gratefully.

Dante's jaw tightens. He is torn visibly between the fear clawing up his throat and the plain, uncomfortable truth of what both of them are saying.

"I don't like it," he says finally.

"You don't have to like it." Elena softens further, taking his hand now. "You just have to trust me. The way I trusted you, the night I walked into that warehouse alone."

He doesn't answer right away. He just squeezes her hand, jaw still tight, and nods once, reluctantly, like the word yes costs him something to give.

---

They spend the next several days chasing smaller leads instead. Each one is thinner than the last.

A storage unit rented under yet another false name turns up nothing but dust and a few empty boxes. Elena stands in the cold metal building, staring at the empty space. The place feels hollow, like a tomb that was never used.

Gabriel is beside her, his flashlight sweeping the corners. "There's nothing here," he says.

"Of course there isn't." Elena's voice is flat. "He knew we were coming."

A gas station camera three states away catches a blurry figure. He might be Adrian. He might just be a stranger in a similar coat.

He is gone from the frame before anyone can even get a clear look at his face.

They watch the footage in Marco's office, the grainy image frozen on a man who could be anyone.

"Can we get a clearer shot?" Elena asks.

"Not with this quality." Marco points at the screen, frustration thick in his voice. "We're lucky we got this much."

A phone number traced back to a burner. Already dead by the time Marco's contact managed to locate it.

Every single lead runs cold within hours. Sometimes less.

Gabriel comes back from checking the storage unit with nothing but dust on his hands and open frustration written across his usually unreadable face.

"Empty," he reports, dropping into a chair at the war room table. "Whatever was there, he already moved it. Days ago, probably. Maybe longer."

"Of course he did," Marco mutters. He drags a hand down his face, his voice thick with exhaustion.

Elena sits at the edge of the table. Her own exhaustion pulls at her now. The trial during the day. This search stretching long into every night. The two of them wearing her down in ways she had not fully expected.

"He's always one step ahead," she says quietly. "It is like he knows exactly when we are getting close, every single time."

"Or he is just that good at covering his tracks," Gabriel offers. Though even he does not sound entirely convinced by his own explanation.

"Or someone is telling him." The words leave Elena's mouth before she has fully thought them through. The room goes very quiet around her.

She looks up. Marco is staring at her. Dante has gone still. Gabriel's hand has frozen on the table.

"You think someone is leaking information," Marco says slowly. He sets down the folder in his hands.

"I don't know." Elena rubs her temples. She is tired. Uncertain. She hates even the shape of the thought in her own head. "It just feels too clean.

Every single lead we find, gone within a day or two, sometimes hours. That is either incredible luck on his part, over and over again, or he is hearing about our moves almost as soon as we make them."

Dante's expression darkens. Something cold and careful settles behind his eyes. "If that is true, it is someone close. Someone who knows what we are doing almost as soon as we decide it ourselves."

"That is a serious accusation," Marco says carefully. Though his own eyes have gone sharp, calculating.

"I'm not accusing anyone specific." Elena holds up both hands quickly. "I don't have proof of anything. I'm saying we should be careful. About who knows what, and when, until we understand more."

The silence that follows is heavier than before. Each of them runs through the short, painful list of people who have had access to the search in their own minds. No one is quite willing to say a single name out loud yet. Not even to themselves.

"We'll be more careful," Dante says finally, breaking the silence. "Compartmentalize what we share, and with who. Just in case. It costs us nothing to be cautious, and it might cost us everything if we're not."

"Agreed," Marco says quietly. Though something uneasy still lingers behind his eyes.

---

That night, Elena cannot sleep.

She lies awake beside Dante long after the lights go out. She stares up at the ceiling, her mind circling the same worry over and over again. Not just Adrian somewhere out there in the dark.

But the far more unsettling thought that someone inside their own circle might be helping him stay hidden.

Someone might be sitting across the table from them, smiling, while quietly feeding their every move to a man who wants to watch them all fall apart.

"You're not sleeping," Dante murmurs beside her. His voice is thick with exhaustion, but his eyes are still open in the dark, watching her.

"Neither are you."

"I keep thinking about what you said earlier. About someone leaking information." He turns onto his side to face her fully.

"I don't want to believe that is possible. Everyone in that room has been with me for years. Some of them longer than I can even remember trusting anyone."

"I don't want to believe it either." Elena turns to face him too. Their faces are close together in the dark, close enough that she can feel the warmth of his breath.

"But I've learned the hard way that the people you trust most are sometimes the very ones capable of hurting you worst. Victor was supposed to protect me.

Instead he built an entire lie around me and called it love, and I believed him for ten straight years without ever once questioning it."

Dante's hand finds hers under the blanket, lacing their fingers together tightly. "I refuse to let that happen to us. To this family we are building, piece by piece, out of everything that has already been broken."

"I know." Her voice softens. Some of the tension eases slightly at his words. "I'm not saying it will happen. I'm just saying we should stay careful. Watchful.

Not because I truly think any one specific person sitting in that room is guilty of anything.

But because Adrian is exactly the kind of man who would find a crack in our trust and slip through it without any of us even noticing until it was far too late."

"You're probably right." Dante brushes a stray curl of hair back from her face. His touch is gentle, achingly familiar now, grounding in a way she still is not quite used to.

"I hate that you have to think this way. That any of us do, after everything."

"I hate it too." She leans into his hand, closing her eyes for a moment. "But I'd rather be careful and wrong about all of it than trusting and blindsided again. I've already lived through what happens when I trust the wrong person completely."

They lie there a while longer in silence. Their hands are still laced together tightly under the blanket. The weight of the search and the trial and the quiet fear of a hidden traitor somewhere close presses down heavily on both of them.

"We'll find him," Dante says finally, quiet but certain, his voice steady in the dark. "Adrian. Whoever's helping him, if anyone truly is. We'll find every piece of it, eventually."

"I know we will." Elena closes her eyes fully now. Exhaustion finally starts to pull her under after days of too little sleep. "I just hope we find it all before he decides to make his next move first. Men like him don't wait forever for an audience to catch up."

"No," Dante agrees softly. He presses a slow kiss to her forehead as her breathing finally starts to even out. "They don't."

---

Outside the window, the city hums on below them. Indifferent and endless.

Somewhere out ther

e, hidden behind a name that was never real to begin with, Adrian Vale watches. He waits. And he smiles quietly at how close they still are not.

  • SHADOWS OF OBLIVION    THE CONFESSION

The dining table is covered in fabric swatches, seating charts, and three different cake samples nobody has actually eaten yet.Elena is starting to understand why people hire someone else to do this. The swatches are spread out in neat rows, ivory and cream and white, all of them looking exactly the same to her tired eyes. The seating charts are covered in tiny handwriting that keeps smudging. The cake samples sit on small plates, slowly going stale."Okay," Sofia says, holding up two swatches of ivory that look, to Elena's eyes, completely identical. "This one, or this one?""They're the same color.""They are not the same color." Sofia squints at them, turning them this way and that in the light. "This one has a little more warmth to it. I think.""Sofia.""I don't know, Elena!" Sofia drops both swatches on the table, laughing despite herself."I have never planned a wedding either! We are two women who grew up with zero normal family traditions trying to plan a wedding from scratc

  • SHADOWS OF OBLIVION    THE ENGAGEMENT

Sofia sees the ring before Elena even says a word. She grabs her cousin's hand across the kitchen table, nearly knocking over her coffee in the process."Oh my god." Her voice climbs about an octave. "Oh my god, Elena.""Careful, you're going to spill—""I don't care about the coffee." Sofia is already crying, laughing at the same time, the way she does everything, all in at once. "Tell me. Tell me right now."Elena cannot help smiling. Warmth spreads through her chest at the sight of her cousin this happy. "He took me to the garden. The real one. Then the church.""Shut up.""He had the ring the whole time. Ten years, Sofia. He kept it this whole time."Sofia presses both hands to her mouth. Tears spill freely now. "I need to sit down. I am sitting down. I need a minute.""You're already sitting.""I need another minute anyway." She wipes her eyes, laughing at herself. "This is the first good thing that has happened to this family in ten years. I need to actually feel it."Elena reac

Elena does not notice anything strange about the evening at first.Dante tells her to dress nice. He says he is taking her somewhere, but he will not say where. She figures it is just a break from all the noise. The trial. The hidden room. The photo of Adrian still sitting on Marco's desk like a splinter none of them can pull out.She has been carrying so much weight lately that a simple night out sounds like exactly what she needs."You're being weird," she says, watching him fix his cufflinks in the mirror. He is standing in front of the tall mirror in their bedroom, his fingers moving carefully, precisely. His reflection stares back at her, and there is something different in his eyes tonight. Something she cannot quite name."I'm always weird," he says. His voice is light, but there is a nervous edge underneath it."You're weird in a specific way tonight." She crosses her arms, studying him. She tilts her head, trying to read him. "Are we in danger? Is this a danger thing?""No."

  • SHADOWS OF OBLIVION    FORGOTTEN ROOM

The journal sits on Marco's desk for three days before anyone can make sense of half of what is written in it. The leather is worn, the pages yellowed with age, the handwriting sometimes too faint to read.Elena keeps coming back to look at it anyway, like the answers might finally show up if she stares hard enough. She sits in the chair beside Marco's desk, her elbows on her knees, her chin resting on her hands. Her eyes move across the pages, searching for something she has missed. The ink blurs in places. The dates jump around. But every time she looks, she sees the same words. Victor. Foundation. Money. Proof. If anything happens to me."There's a page missing," Marco says, flipping through it again, frowning. He holds the journal up to the light, examining the spine. "Right here. See the edge? Torn out clean."Elena leans over his shoulder. Her stomach tightens. She can see the ragged edge where the paper was ripped, not cut, but torn quickly, roughly. "What was on it?""No way t

  • SHADOWS OF OBLIVION    THE ROSSI ESTATE

The gates of the old Rossi estate creak open slowly, rust groaning against rust, like the house itself has been holding its breath for ten years and only now remembers how to exhale.Elena sits frozen in the passenger seat, staring up the long gravel drive at the mansion beyond — pale stone, ivy climbing one whole side, windows dark and empty like closed eyes."We don't have to do this today," Dante says gently, watching her instead of the house."No." Elena's hand tightens on the door handle. "I need to see it.Sofia said Victor never sold it. Just locked it up and let it sit here, untouched, for ten years.""Why would he keep it?""I don't know." She finally pulls her eyes away from the windows to look at him."Maybe he wanted a piece of my father he could control, even after he was gone.Maybe he just didn't want anyone else finding whatever's still inside."Marco pulls the car to a stop at the top of the drive, and for a long moment, nobody moves."I'll wait out here with Gabriel,
