Elena's POV

I was still staring at the headline when my phone started ringing.

I blinked, dragging my eyes away from the screen long enough to see who was calling.

Mom.

I let out a tired sigh before answering.

"Hello, Mom—"

"What the hell is wrong with you, Elena?"

I pulled the phone away from my ear, staring at it in disbelief. "Good afternoon to you too."

"Don't you dare get smart with me!" she snapped. "Have you completely lost your mind? What were you thinking?"

I closed my eyes. Here we go

Adrain’s pov I stared out the window into the night. I was gripping the sill, but I couldn't see much, because I had chosen the bedroom facing west—the one facing the major entrance to the mansion. Oh, I could see the darker outline of the ragged rim of the city, and if it were daylight, I would have a view to its very end. But I couldn't see her.I had heard Elena leave the house, and I knew by listening acutely that she had rounded the other side to go toward the creek. I pictured her running, her skirts billowing around her, revealing lots of long, sexy leg."babe?" Sophie slithered from the bed and came up behind me, pressing her naked breasts against my bare back.I still wore my jeans, and with her hand, she gripped me through the denim. I was full and turgid, but not because of her. I was aroused because he wanted Elena. My own stepsister. "You miss me," she said, satisfied. She kissed my shoulder, then bit it. I flinched. She rubbed the length of me expertly. "Come to bed."

Elena's POVI didn't know how I felt anymore. In fact, I had stopped trying to figure it out because every thought that crossed my mind only left me more confused and miserable. Not thinking was easier. It was the only relief I could find. With my back pressed against the wall and my eyes fixed on the bolted door, I sat there like a lifeless zombie. I was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, and I didn't even have the strength to move. After a while, I turned my head slightly and looked toward the open window, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunset. But there was nothing to see.Of course. The enormous walls surrounding this miserable valley blocked almost everything from view. The little light that remained outside was fading quickly, and soon darkness would swallow everything.Miriam eventually walked in, carrying the dishes from the table. She threw a few nasty glances in my direction as she passed, but I pretended not to notice her. I simply kept eating while listening to

Here we go again."Mom, can you please calm down?""Calm down?" she repeated, her voice rising. "You expect me to calm down after seeing that ridiculous headline? Do you have any idea what people are saying about this family?"I glanced at my phone again. The headline was still there, staring back at me.I rubbed my forehead. "Mom, I can explain—""Explain what? That you're selfish? That you've decided to embarrass this family because you want attention? Or that you've become so stupid that you couldn't f

Elena's POVElias chuckled. As if the news he had just shown me wasn't enough to make my entire world come crashing down.I was still leaning against the wall, trying to process what I had just seen on his phone. I blinked several times, hoping I had somehow misunderstood the headline. But no.The pictures were right there. Adrian and Sophie standing beside each other, looking like the perfect couple. Sophie's hand rested on his chest, and she was smiling at the cameras like she had just won the lottery.Maybe she had. After all, she was getting the man I had spent years loving. And he was giving her everything I had once foolishly imagined we would share."What's wrong, Elena?" Elias asked, his voice dripping with amusement. "You look like you've seen a ghost."I dragged my eyes away from his phone."Get out."He raised an eyebrow."Excuse me?""I said get out of my house!" I snapped, pointing toward the door. "I don't care what you want or what you think you can do. I didn't invite

ELENA'S POVSomeone had tried to kill me again. And honestly, I was beginning to get tired of being the target of other people's twisted plans.I had spent the last few days trying to make sense of everything that had happened, but one thing was becoming increasingly clear. Lucas wasn't going to stop until he got what he wanted.Whatever game he was playing, I was somehow caught in the middle of it.And I couldn't keep sitting around waiting for him to make his next move.I needed to do something. Before he carried out whatever plan he had been preparing.Unfortunately, I had absolutely no idea where to start. That morning, I decided to put the thoughts aside for a little while. It was my day off, and I desperately needed something to distract me from the mess my life had become.Painting usually did that for me.It was one of the few things I could do without worrying about what anyone thought. I wasn't particularly interested in becoming a professional artist, but there was somethin

Adrian's povI woke up with the taste of blood in my mouth and Jules's voice ringing in my ears. Honestly, I couldn't think of two worse things to wake up to on the same fucking day."Well, look who's finally awake."His voice carried an almost cheerful amusement, as though he hadn't just watched me get beaten to the point where every part of my body felt like it was falling apart.I tried to move, but the moment I shifted, pain shot through my ribs.Fuck.It felt like someone had taken a baseball bat and carefully smashed each one individually, making sure none of them escaped the punishment. Even breathing hurt. Every shallow inhale sent another wave of agony through my chest. The two men who had beaten me were now standing behind Jules, their arms folded across their chests. Neither looked particularly tired or bothered. They watched me with the same bored expressions people wore when waiting for something uninteresting to happen.Apparently, beating the hell out of someone was jus
