The moment the words left my mouth, the air in the room shifted. It felt thicker, heavier, like something unseen had woken up. The pale old man straightened, his eyes narrowing with an interest that unsettled everyone, even Valery. I watched Fake Pearl’s smile falter, just for a second, before she forced it back into place.

“Regret,” the old man said softly. “A curious word for someone in your position.”

He stepped back, not in fear, but in caution. And that alone made my pulse steady. He felt something. He sensed something. Something he had not predicted.

Good.

I lowered my head, letting my hair fall slightly forward. I needed time. That was all. A minute. Even half a minute. Anything to find a crack in their arrogance.

But Valery moved first.

She stalked closer, face twisted with triumph and bitterness. “It is over. Stop pretending you have any power here.”

Fake Pearl crossed her arms with a smug tilt of her chin. “Honestly, you should be grateful. Raising a child was never suited t

The room felt colder after Valery left. The lantern’s flame trembled, sending thin lines of light across the stone floor. The masked man stood three steps away from me, silent, but his presence felt sharp, like the edge of a blade pressed near my skin.He was not breathing normally. His breaths were shallow and spaced apart, almost calculated. That alone told me enough. He was not human. He was not wolf. He was something that had been hiding behind Valery all this time, something she trusted enough to guard me alone. My heartbeat thumped in my ears. I forced myself to breathe slowly, deeply, even as my wrists throbbed painfully and the rope cut into my skin.I studied him carefully.Tall. Broad. Still. The mask covering his face had no markings, no eye slits, yet I felt eyes on me. Watching. Measuring.“Who are you,” I asked quietly.Nothing.His head tilted slightly, just enough to show he heard me, but not enough to show interest. I swallowed hard. The silence pressed into me thicke

I woke up slowly. Too slowly. My mind felt like it was swimming through thick water, every thought heavy and delayed. My eyelids dragged when I tried to open them, and for a moment I had no idea where I was or why every bone in my body felt like it had been slammed against rocks.Cold air brushed my skin.Hard stone pressed into my back.My wrists were tied. My ankles stiff and sore. But none of that mattered. None of it registered properly until I reached inward the same way I had learned to check my own heartbeat. My child.I felt them. Faint and shaken, but still alive.A breath escaped me in a broken rush. Relief hit so hard my eyes burned. I almost cried. Almost. I pushed the tears back because crying now would waste time I did not have. Then I heard a voice that yanked me straight into reality.“So the little rat wakes up.”I knew that voice. My eyes snapped open fully.Valery stood a few feet away, arms crossed like she was admiring her handiwork. A slow, poisonous smile stretc

Fake Pearl managed to slip away from the garden gathering once Patricia became engrossed in the garden flowers. As she walked toward the east corridor, her steps slow, she felt the tug of a familiar gaze behind her.Vicky followed a moment later, glancing around nervously before hurrying into the dimly lit guest room where Fake Pearl waited. The door shut with a soft click. The room fell into an uneasy silence.Fake Pearl’s eyes narrowed at Vicky before she spoke. “What is it now?”Vicky wrung her fingers, her voice low. “It should start tonight. The slow acting aphrodisiac in the tea. He will feel it today, tonight.”Fake Pearl arched a brow. “And?”“And… he will be disoriented. His head will hurt. He might be dizzy. It will lower his guard.”Fake Pearl crossed her arms slowly. “You are certain?”Vicky nodded quickly. “You said you wanted him close. You wanted him vulnerable. This is the safest way. He will think it is stress. Nothing more.”A cold smile tilted Fake Pearl’s lips. “It

Fake pearl's perspective.I stepped into the garden, letting the sun fall over my skin like I had always loved. The breeze brushed gently through the leaves, carrying the quiet scent of flowers, but regardless I remained guarded and aware. Every motion I made had to be measured, soft enough, gentle enough and most of all, Pearl enough.I walked along the path slowly, fingers brushing the petals, when Patricia’s voice floated behind me.“Pearl?”I turned, schooling my smile to something warm and calm. She walked toward me, tucking a curl behind her ear with that sweet and careful grace. Her presence had always been a quiet comfort. She knew Pearl. The real one. Every detail, every weakness. So I had studied her carefully, matching affection with affection, softness with softness. There was a reason I latched into her when I did, I had to know my enemies.“You look peaceful today,” she said, falling into step beside me. “I’ve always felt fresh air would help after everything.”“It does

Fake Pearl woke before Harold did. She lay still beside him, breathing quietly, watching him in the early dawn light. He slept on his side facing her, jaw relaxed, one hand loosely placed near her hip as though his body had reached for her in his sleep. It should have pleased her. It was everything she wanted. His closeness. His trust. His heart leaning toward her without effort. But instead of satisfaction, something else, sharp twisted in her chest.Harold had kissed her forehead last night with too much calm. Too much gentleness. Almost like a man who already knew something. A man who only pretended to wait for proof. She replayed that moment again and again in her mind. The soft kiss. His steady eyes. His smile held something unreadable.Had he seen the real Pearl in some detail she had missed. Had he sensed her stiffness. Had he smelled something off. Had he noticed how her breath shifted.Fake Pearl forced herself to stop thinking. She rose carefully from the bed and went to the
