Susan’s POV

“We’ll be back with our lawyers. Enjoy your last days as CEO, Mark.”

She pulled me into the hallway, into the elevator, and into the car. I looked at her as she tried to start our beat-down Chevy.

The car sputtered and coughed but it would not start. My mother hit the steering wheel with her fists, causing my heart to thump.

She stopped struggling with the car and turned to look at me.

“I thought you wanted nothing to do with it,” she hissed, “but you acted just like the bitch I raised you to be.”

There was only anger and perhaps a tinge of hatred when I looked into my mother’s eyes.

“I want none of this,” I said, “if my father did not want me when I was alive, no amount of wealth is going to make up for it.”

She slapped me hard across the face.

I had seen it coming but I had not stopped her.

Trying to stop her from doing anything, only made life worse for me.

“Do you have any idea how hard I have worked to provide for us until now?” she spat angrily, her eyes blazing fiercely as she looked at me, “you ungrateful wench.”

I looked at my mother, the woman who had raised me, and wondered not for the first time if she had really given birth to me.

“You want to live in that shitty apartment forever? Scraping by on freelance work? This is our chance, idiot. Our one chance to have everything we deserve,” she continued angrily.

“I never asked for—”

“You never ask for anything! That’s your problem!” She lit a cigarette, blew smoke at the window. “Richard Cuban owed us. He promised to take care of us and he lied. Well, now we’re taking what’s ours.”

I stared out the window at the city passing by and wondered how my life had turned into this nightmare.

Two days later, my mother announced she was going to see our lawyers.

“We should have heard news from them,” my mother said, “it feels like I’m paying them to do nothing.”

I said nothing as I watched her leave the house. I left the house myself thirty minutes later and took a cab to Cuban Industries. I wanted to tell that bastard who was my half-brother that he could take all of our father’s money and shove it down his fucking throat. I did not care about any of it and I was going to leave town the following week.

I had received an offer from my old professor to do a fellowship programme at the university. I could teach and work to get my PhD. It was not going to give me millions of dollars like the Cuban estate would, but it would make me comfortable and I would reserve my dignity.

My mother did not know about it yet and I had no intention of letting her find out.

I headed right to the topmost floor when I got to the impressive building in the middle of Manhattan. His office was not hard to find, but his secretary told me at once that he was not in it but in a conference meeting. I walked out and found the conference hall adjacent to his office.

I walked in, holding my head high like I had a right to be here. I watched with glee as Mark’s face reddened when he saw me walk in. His twelve or more executives turned their heads to look at me.

“Why are you here?” he demanded from me, his hands balling up in a fist.

“Really?” I asked, “You want us to do this here?” My tone carried my contempt.

“Everyone leave,” Mark’s deep voice filled the room.

I could see the hesitation on the faces of his employees, but they did not question him, they did just as he said.

I stood close to the door as the room emptied. Mark stood up and walked towards me, his heavy steps I knew were meant to intimidate me. He was standing nose to nose with me as he looked into my eyes trying to break my spirit.

I stared right back at him, proving to him that he did not scare me one bit. But I caught myself inhaling his pinewood aftershave instead of glaring at him. I cleared my throat and took a single step backwards.

“My mother is determined to take everything,” I said, tearing my eyes from his intense gaze this time as I looked around the conference hall.

“And I believe that she will,” I continued, “it would be best to settle with her out of court before she destroys everything your father built up.”

His gaze hunted me, but I did not look at him.

“I’m leaving next week,” I said, skirting around him so I could be out of his orbit, “she doesn’t know that yet.”

“Why would you tell me that?” he asked. I could hear the amusement in his tone, I looked up to meet his eyes and they had the look of a hunter. It sent chills down my spine.

“I know what you billionaire bastards are capable of—”

“In this case, you are the billionaire bastard,” he cut me off, emphasizing the last two words.

“I do not want to be caught in the crossfire,” I tried to rein in my anger.

I was looking at his face and he had a sickening smile on his lips, like he was enjoying my torment.

“That means you do have something to lose,” he said, his tone dangerously low as he closed the space between us.

“You’ve made a grave mistake, little sister,” he said, lowering his head to whisper at the nape of my neck.

“You’ve exposed your weakness to me, and I intend to use it fully,” he continued, his hot breath tickling my neck.

I closed my eyes involuntarily and gasped as I felt my nipples harden underneath the cotton shirt I had on.

Mark brought his face to hover over mine. My eyes were still closed, but I could feel his heavy hand on my shoulders and the bridge of his nose rubbing mine.

“You know what I think little sister?” his voice was a whisper that sent shivers through me, “you’re putting up a performance.”

My eyes flashed open and he was too close to me, dangerously close—so close that I was aware of the chemistry that ran like a current between us. It made me gasp again, leaving my cheeks flushed as I leaned into him involuntarily.

We were going to kiss, I could sense it as our lips drew closer—

The door slammed open with a crash that made us both jump apart.

Mark “Thank you for agreeing to walk Susan down the aisle,” I said to my mother who adjusted my bow tie for me. “Of course!” she replied, “it's only right.” She stood back as though to admire her creation. “I'm really proud of you, son,” she said, her eyes filled with tears, “I used to worry you won't get married until I was decaying in my grave.” “Mom! Why would you say such a thing? And you shouldn't cry, you'll ruin your makeup.” She sniffled and dabbed her eyes with a napkin. “Don't mess this up, Mark,” her voice was serious, “I know you're a playboy, but don't…” “I won't,” I said to her, “I promise.” She looked worried still, “and you're still sure you do not wish to know who your biological…” I cut her off before she could complete the sentence, “Richard will always be my father. I do not wish to know the man who donated his sperm to make that happen.” My mother punched my arm. “Ouch!” I winced. “Saying things like that makes it easy for people to gossip about us,”

Susan It felt surreal. “With a unanimous vote, you are hereby appointed president of the Cuban Group.” Even the applause that erupted around the board felt unreal. The sight of Mark seated at my right, clapping hard to cheer me, felt unreal as well. I had gone from an ordinary college graduate with a toxic mother to the president of one of the largest cooperatives in the entire world. I cleared my throat as the applause died down. “Thank you,” I said, bowing my head a little bit. “It has been an honour to serve on this esteemed board these past few months. You have made room for me even when I knew absolutely nothing. Thank you for your unwavering support.” Another warm applause followed, and I proceeded to sit down for the first time at the head of the table—a table where the father I had never met growing up had left for me. **** “You know,” Mark said as we walked along the shoreline at the beach, “it's been exactly a year since you stumbled into my life demanding that you

Mark I was seated in my office going over the fiscal budget when my secretary informed me there was someone without an appointment requesting to see me. “Did this person give a name?” I asked my secretary. She looked at me with an expression that told me this was not a welcome guest. “She said her name is Susan Rivers? The lady who has been harassing you for…” “Please send her in,” I said to my secretary. My excitement at the sound of her name made my secretary confused. Just a week ago I would have gone wild if I were told Susan was within the company's premises. So I understood why my excitement looked unnatural to her. I tried to switch to a poker face, but it was too late. “Send her in,” I repeated to my stunned secretary. Susan walked in mere seconds after that looking elegant and beautiful. I enjoyed watching her walk. Her steps were graceful and yet commanding at the same time. “Have you watched the news?” she asked anxiously as she sat across from me. I stood up and

Susan The woman I had known all my life as Eleanor Rivers was seated across from me, a clear glass dividing us. She picked up the phone on her end and I did the same. “Did you really do it?” I asked her despite the overwhelming evidence I faced. Still, I wanted to hear it from her. “Did you kill my mother?” I asked her. She laughed, a throaty wicked laughter like she did not care what I thought of her. “Does it make you happy that I'm behind bars?” she asked me, “you finally got what you wanted, didn't you?” “You think this makes me happy?” I asked bitterly. “Then why did you have me arrested?” she asked me, “You did not have to report me to the cops.”I had always wondered while growing up how she had been able to afford to buy all those drugs she was addicted to and I knew the answer now. She had gotten that money by extorting Mark's mother. She had collected so much from the woman that it would have been more than enough to provide us a comfortable life, and yet she chose t

Mark “What is this place?” Susan asked me as we walked into the private study that stood by itself in my father's old house. I used to come here when I was a lot younger to play with my father or whoever I thought was my father. He would put me in a corner after hours of running around his large study and place a book in front of me. “You are what you read, son,” he would look at me, his eyes filled with love, “and if you read nothing, you will become nothing.” That had made no sense to my eight-year-old self. I turned on the switch and the light flooded the dusty room. It was a large study that doubled as my father's private study and library. “My father… I mean Richard used to spend a lot of time here reading and working,” I said, “if we are looking for answers about our past, I believe this would be the place to search.” Susan had a pensive look on her face. “What more do you think we'll find?” she asked, looking around, “and what does it change?” I knew what it would chang

Susan I felt like my world was falling into a million pieces right before my eyes. My vision blurred as I looked at the DNA result in my hands. It couldn't be, could it? The woman I believed all my life to be my mother was not my mother? Who was I then? Who was I?“Is it that shocking?” the lady who had handed the result to me asked. I looked at her but my vision remained blurry. I rubbed my eyes and said, “This… It may be wrong, yes?” The woman had a smile on her lips. She had definitely been asked this question so many times. “The result is conclusive,” she said, “it is not wrong.” “But… but there can be an error…” “You can request to have another test done,” she said kindly, “but I know another test will not change the result.” I nodded and walked out of the testing centre in a daze, my mind filled with conflicting emotions as I continued to stare at the result. I continued walking, almost absentmindedly, and ran into a warm wall. I knew I had hit someone, so I bowed and t
