CHAPTER 51

Lucas’ POV

I couldn’t bring myself to eat, not when my head was spinning with everything that had happened in the last twenty-four hours - the council’s threat, Clarisse’s outburst and the thought of war brewing right under my roof.

I stared blankly at the papers scattered across my desk. None of it mattered right now. What mattered was keeping the pack stable.

The door creaked open softly and Chris stepped in. “You haven’t touched your food,” he said, his eyes darting to the plate.

I gave a tired half-smile. “Didn’t have the appetite.”

He shut the door behind him and walked closer. “You might need it. You’ll want your strength for what’s coming.”

I frowned, sensing the unease in his tone. “What’s coming?”

He hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Alpha Kael is here.”

My stomach tightened instantly.

“Kael?” I repeated.

Chris nodded. “He’s at the gate. Says he wants to speak with you in person.”

I leaned back in my chair, silent for a long moment. My first instinct was to tell him

Emily’s POVI woke up reaching for him.My hand brushed over nothing but cold sheets. For a moment I lay there, staring up at the ceiling with a sinking feeling in my stomach. Lucas always woke up earlier than me, but the bed never felt this empty.“Lucas?” I called out as I sat up.A bit of unease crawled up my spine. I got out of bed and quickly made my way through the house, checking the kitchen, the living room, the hallway, and even the guest rooms. The last place left was the study.I pushed the door open slowly and sure enough, there he was.Lucas stood by the window, his back to me, one hand holding his phone to his ear while the other rested against the desk like he needed the support. He was talking softly, but the edge in his voice made my heart clench.I stayed silent until he finally ended the call. When he turned around, he gave me a small smile.“You’re awake,” he said.I crossed my arms, fighting the sudden wave of frustration washing through me. “Why are you working s

Lucas’ POVBy the time I got home, I immediately spotted her.Emily was slouched on the couch, her head tilted against the armrest, eyes half-lidded with exhaustion. An untouched glass of water sat on the table, and her hair usually neatly brushed was now a tangled mess that framed her pale face. Her shoes were kicked off near the door, and the faint scent of alcohol lingered in the air.For a second, I just stood there, taking in the sight of her. Relief flooded through me that she was home, safe but then the worry set in again.“Emily,” I said softly, walking toward her. “Hey… are you okay?”Her eyes fluttered open at the sound of my voice, unfocused at first, then slowly finding me.“Lucas?” she whispered, her tone almost childlike.“Yeah, it’s me.” I crouched beside her, brushing a strand of hair off her cheek. “You scared us. Karen and I were worried sick. Where did you go?”Before she could answer, Karen appeared from behind, arms folded and concern written all over her face.“W

Emily’s POVI never thought I’d end up sitting in a bar, of all places.I’d passed this street a dozen times back when I came to visit Lucas at the hospital, but I never once looked inside the glowing red doorway that now called to me. I wasn’t raised to drink. Back in school, I was the quiet girl—the one who stayed out of trouble, who sipped juice at parties and left before midnight. But tonight, I didn’t want to be that girl. Tonight, I didn’t want to be anyone at all.My hands trembled as I pushed open the door. The heavy smell of alcohol and cheap perfume wrapped around me immediately. The bar wasn’t crowded, just a few people hunched over tables, the soft hum of music vibrating through the walls. I took a seat at the far end, away from the laughter and chatter, and ordered the first drink the bartender suggested. The liquid burned as it went down, but I forced myself to take another sip.I pressed my hand to my chest, trying to steady my breathing, but the ache only grew stronger

Lucas’s POVThe morning came in a flash. I hadn’t slept a wink because every time I closed my eyes, Emily’s angry voice echoed in my head. But maybe she was right. Maybe I deserved to die alone after keeping the truth from her.I was standing by the window, staring out into the early sunlight, when I heard footsteps behind me. Clarisse’s scent hit me before I even turned.“Lucas,” she said.I turned to face her. She looked calmer than usual, her hair brushed neatly, and she wore a pale blue dress that made her look innocent.“Can we talk?” she asked, stepping into the room.I sighed. “If this is about Emily, I’m not in the mood.”“It’s not,” she said quickly, walking closer. “It’s about us.”That made me turn fully to her. “Us?”Clarisse nodded. “Yes. I’ve been thinking maybe it’s time we stop fighting what’s meant to be.”My brows furrowed. “What are you talking about?”She smiled faintly. “A marriage between us, Lucas. It makes sense, doesn’t it?”I stared at her, stunned. For a m

Lucas’s POVShe was gone before I could say anything else. And maybe it was for the best. Maybe if she hated me, it would be easier for her to move on when I wasn’t here anymore. That was what I told myself, anyway. But the ache in my chest said otherwise. When I returned to my ward, Chris and Karen were there. Chris was sitting idly by the bed, while Karen was flipping through a magazine like she didn’t have a care in the world. The moment I walked in, both of them looked up.Karen raised a brow. “Well, that was fast. Did she slap you or just storm out?”I ignored the sarcasm. “She’s gone,” I said.Chris sighed and stood. “What the hell did you expect, Lucas? You hid something that big from her, then tried to play martyr when she found out. Of course she’s angry.”I shot him a glare. “You’re one to talk. You just dumped the news on her like a bomb.”“Oh, please,” Chris snapped, his voice rising. “You were never going to tell her! Someone had to. I’m not going to sit here and let you

  • SOLD AS THE ALPHA KING'S PET    CHAPTER 62

Emily’s POVThe scent of onions filled the kitchen, sharp enough to sting my eyes, but I didn’t care. I’d been standing by the counter for over an hour, chopping vegetables I wasn’t even sure I’d end up using. Cooking for Lucas had become my favorite distraction, something to do with my hands when my mind refused to quiet down. The sound of sizzling butter, the rhythmic clatter of the spoon against the pot, that was the kind of noise that helped me forget. Or at least, it used to.I was just reaching for the salt when my phone rang.“Chris,” I muttered under my breath. "You’re getting married,” he said and then the line went dead.I blinked at my phone. For a moment, I thought I’d misheard him. Married?I called him back immediately, but the call went straight to voicemail.“Chris, what the hell are you talking about?” I said into the phone. “Call me back.”I waited a few seconds, but nothing. It had to be a joke. Chris had an odd sense of humor sometimes, especially when he was stre
