Chapter 1

ELENA's POV

The hospital bill trembled in my hands. Not because of the air conditioner humming above me. Because the number printed at the bottom refused to make sense.

Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

I read it again. Then a third time.

The amount never changed.

It was more money than I could earn in years, yet the hospital expected me to find it in less than a week if I wanted to save the only family I had left.

Around me, the intensive care unit carried on as though nothing had happened. The steady beep of the heart monitor echoed through the corridor while I sat frozen.

I stared at the paper for a long moment, willing the numbers to change, but they didn’t. They only mocked me, reminding me that no matter how many double shifts I worked or how many dreams I sacrificed, I would never earn enough before time ran out.

Life moved forward, and only mine had come to a standstill. I lowered myself onto one of the cold plastic chairs outside the ICU and closed my eyes.

There has to be another way.

The thought came again. Just as hopelessly as it had every night for the past three months.

“Miss Bennett.”

Dr. Carter approached, removed his glasses, rubbed the edge of his nose, and took a slow breath.

“Your mother’s condition is deteriorating rapidly. Without the surgery… we can’t guarantee she’ll make it much longer. You have seventy-two hours to make a decision, Miss Bennett.”

His voice was calm, but his words shattered the last piece of hope I had been holding onto.

“After that, we can’t promise the operating room will still be available for your mother.”

My heart clenched painfully.

“How long does she have?”

“A few weeks. Maybe less.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. A few weeks. That was all the universe was willing to give her.

“I’ll find the money,” I whispered, even though I had no idea how.

The doctor gave me a sympathetic look before walking away.

I pushed open the door to the ICU room. My mother, Rose Bennett, looked painfully frail beneath the white sheets, machines beeping steadily around her. She studied my face before quietly noticing my swollen eyes.

“You’ve been crying again,” she said weakly, her voice barely above a whisper.

I forced a bright smile. “No, Mom. I’m fine.”

She reached out a thin hand. “You’ve always been a terrible liar, my sweet girl.”

I took her hand, fighting back fresh tears.

“I don’t want you wasting your youth chained to this hospital bed,” she continued softly. “Promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“Choose your own happiness for once.”

Tears blurred my vision. How could I choose happiness when the only family I had left was slipping away?

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Nathan ❤️

A small smile finally broke through the pain.

I answered immediately.

“Hey, baby,” I said, trying to sound cheerful.

“I’ve got a surprise for you tonight,” Nathan replied, his voice unusually bright.

My heart skipped. “A surprise?”

“My uncle  wants to meet you.”

I blinked in shock. “Your uncle? You’ve never introduced me to your family before.”

“I know,” he chuckled. “But tonight is different.”

My pulse quickened with hope. After three years together, was he finally ready to take the next step?

“I’ll text you the address.”

He ended the call before I could ask another question. I remained standing beside my mother’s hospital bed, my phone still pressed lightly against my ear.

My gaze drifted toward the heart monitor beside her bed. The steady beeping reminded me that nothing had changed, that the hospital still wanted three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Yet my mother still had only seventy-two hours before the surgery could no longer be guaranteed.

I should be thinking about how to save her life. Instead, I was thinking about dinner with Nathan’s family. Guilt tightened painfully in my chest.

What kind of daughter leaves her dying mother to chase her own happiness?

Then her words echoed in my mind about choosing my own happiness. I slowly closed my eyes, and a slow smile touched my lips.

Three years of loving Nathan Kingsley. Three years of believing that one day he would finally introduce me to the family he spoke about so rarely. Whenever I had asked before, he always smiled, kissed my forehead, and promised, “Soon.”

Maybe this was the “soon” he had always meant.

I lowered the phone and turned toward my mother, who had drifted back to sleep beneath the white hospital blanket. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor filled the quiet room, reminding me that reality hadn’t changed simply because hope had appeared.

She was still fighting for her life, and the hospital bill was still sitting inside my handbag.

Nothing had changed…

And yet, somehow, everything suddenly felt different.

If Nathan’s uncle truly wanted to meet me, perhaps this wasn’t just dinner. Perhaps Nathan was finally ready to take the next step. Maybe he wanted his family to know the woman he intended to spend the rest of his life with.

The thought made my heart race.

I quietly reached for her hand, careful not to wake her.

“I’ll come back soon, Mom,” I whispered. “Maybe… maybe I’ll finally have some good news for you.”

She didn’t answer. She slept peacefully, unaware that I was walking toward the happiest evening I could imagine… or the worst night of my life.

A soft vibration pulled me from my thoughts.

Nathan had sent the address.

I glanced at the message, smiled to myself, and slipped the phone into my handbag before taking one last look at her.

Then I walked out of the hospital, carrying hope in my heart…

Completely unaware that hope could be the cruelest lie of all.

By the time I reached my apartment, the sun had already begun its slow descent beyond the Manhattan skyline, painting the windows in fading shades of gold.

I unlocked the door to my tiny apartment. The space was barely large enough for a bed, a kitchenette, and an aging wardrobe that had survived college with me.

I pulled open the wardrobe doors: work uniforms, faded sweaters, and jeans I wore almost every day.

Nothing looked worthy of meeting the family of the man I loved.

Then my fingers stopped. Hanging quietly at the far corner was a simple blue dress, still wrapped inside its protective cover.

I had bought it six months earlier after stopping outside a boutique I couldn’t afford. I remembered promising myself I would wear it on a day worth remembering.

Perhaps… tonight was that day.

The taxi rolled through Manhattan beneath a sky painted with fading shades of orange and gray.

I rested my forehead against the cool glass. Buildings rushed past one after another, yet I barely noticed them.

My thoughts belonged somewhere else. Nathan.

Three years of birthdays celebrated together, countless evenings walking home beneath the city lights. Promises whispered when the world seemed asleep and dreams of a future we would build together. Nathan had rarely spoken much about his family. Whenever I asked, he always smiled and kissed my forehead.

“Soon.”

Tonight… Soon had finally arrived.

Twenty minutes later, the taxi slowed before towering black wrought-iron gates.

I looked up and my breath caught. Beyond the gates stood one of the largest private estates I had ever seen.

The mansion rose against the evening sky like something from another world, its countless windows glowing warmly beneath the fading light.

Elegant fountains shimmered beside a circular driveway lined with perfectly trimmed hedges.

It wasn’t a house. It was a kingdom built from wealth and power.

“We’re here, miss,” the driver said.

I blinked, suddenly aware that I had been staring. I paid the fare before checking my reflection one last time in the taxi window and smoothing invisible wrinkles from my blue dress. I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear and finally took one deep breath.

“Choose your happiness.”

My mother’s words echoed quietly inside my mind.

I smiled.

Then stepped toward the gates. Before I reached the entrance, an elderly butler descended the front steps.

His immaculate black suit looked as though it had never known a wrinkle. He stopped before me and inclined his head.

“Miss Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“We’ve been expecting you.”

The words made my heartbeat quicken. So Nathan really had told them I was coming.

The butler extended a white-gloved hand.

“If you don’t mind, Miss Bennett…”

“Yes?”

“I’ll need your phone.”

I blinked.

“…My phone?”

“No electronic devices are permitted inside the estate.”

“Mr. Kingsley’s instructions.”

The request felt unusual, but I quickly reminded myself that powerful families probably had different rules. Without another question, I handed it over.

“Thank you.”

As I stepped through the gates, they closed behind me with a deep metallic clang that echoed across the quiet estate.

The sound made me pause.

For reasons I couldn’t explain, a strange uneasiness settled over me.

It felt as though I had just walked into a place that wasn’t going to let me leave unchanged.

The front doors opened before I could gather my thoughts.

The butler welcomed me inside with a warm, professional smile.

“Mr. Kingsley is waiting for you.”

I drew a slow breath, trying to steady the nervous excitement racing through my chest. This was it, the moment I had waited three years for.

Completely unaware…

I followed the butler into the mansion, believing I was about to meet the family of the man I loved.

The massive doors closed behind me.

Somewhere deep inside the mansion beyond those enormous doors, Alexander Kingsley was waiting.

Before dawn… I would lose the man I had loved, discover a betrayal I never imagined, and unknowingly step into the life of the one man who would change my fate forever.

  • SOLD TO SAVE HER MOTHER   THE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

CHAPTER 6Elena's POV“I want you to marry me.”I stared at Alexander, stunned by the words he had just spoken. He had told me to marry him so he could help with my mother's medical bills, and for a moment I could do nothing but laugh. It burst out of me before I could stop it, sharp and disbelieving, because the whole thing felt absurd too ridiculous to be real. When my laughter finally ebbed, I looked at him and said, “You want me to marry you so you can save my mother?’Nathan’s anger surged the moment he heard it. “Uncle, you cannot do this,” he said, his voice tight with fury. “She is my ex-girlfriend.”Alexander’s expression did not soften. “Tell me where it was written that I cannot marry my nephew's ex-girlfriend.” Alexander came very close to me, close enough for me to catch the scent of his cologne, and stared directly into my eyes.“You know I have no woman in my life because I have never been interested in unnecessary relationship drama. But I need a wife, and she nee

  • SOLD TO SAVE HER MOTHER   A Price of his help

CHAPTER 5 NATHAN POV The heavy study door opened beneath my hand with quiet deliberation. The sound was neither loud nor abrupt, yet it fractured the oppressive silence that had settled over the room long before I arrived. I stepped inside. Rain still clung to the shoulders of my charcoal overcoat. I shrugged it off and handed it to the waiting butler without looking at him. The motion was automatic, practiced, the same gesture I had made a thousand times in a thousand different rooms that belonged to my family. Doors opened for me. People stepped aside. The world arranged itself around the Kingsley name with the same reliable precision it always had. The butler accepted the coat with a respectful bow and withdrew. The door clicked shut behind him. Only then did I turn fully into the room. Alexander stood beside the rain-speckled window, hands loosely clasped behind his back, exactly as I had expected. What I had not expected was the woman seated in the leather chair across fro

Chapter 3: Alexander Kingsley’s POVI watched the rain move across the tall windows of my study in slow, unbroken lines. Manhattan’s lights blurred and reformed beneath the storm, soft gold and cold white smearing across the glass. The wine I had poured earlier remained untouched on the desk. I had filled the glass out of habit, not need. The liquid was simply something to occupy the hand while the mind worked. The leather folder sat closed beside it. I had already read every page twice. The investigators were thorough when I gave the order myself. Medical records spanning the last three months. Bank statements showing a steady hemorrhage of money into hospital accounts. Work schedules that left almost no margin for rest. The pawn ticket for a gold watch that had once belonged to a dead man. A late rent notice stamped in red. The names of the night-shift nurses on the oncology floor. Even the precise time Elena Bennett usually left the hospital after visiting her mother.I knew more

  • SOLD TO SAVE HER MOTHER   THE OTHER WOMAN

Chapter 2: Nathan’s POVI stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse, fastening the cuff of my shirt as the Manhattan skyline stretched beneath me in every direction. The city moved without pause traffic crawling along the avenues far below, lights flickering on in office towers, the distant pulse of a world that never truly slept. None of it reached me. I had been raised to live above it, trained from childhood to observe rather than participate, to calculate rather than feel. Distance, my family had taught me early, was a form of power. My phone vibrated against the marble countertop.Elena ❤️I stared at the screen longer than I should have. The small red heart beside her name looked almost mocking in its simplicity. For a moment I considered answering. I could still hear the soft way she said my name when she was tired, the quiet hope she never tried to hide even when the hospital bills stacked higher and the nights grew longer. I remembered how she used to fall as
