LYDIA

“Oh, little omega. You really don't know what you just invoked.”

The words should have frightened me, but what unsettled me most was how his expression changed afterward. The amusement remained at his mouth, yet the hunger in his golden eyes softened when he noticed my uncertainty.

For the first time, Magnus seemed to understand that beneath my defiance was a nineteen-year-old woman who had never been free to decide what happened to her.

He reached for the blanket and carefully pulled it over me, covering my exposed body before moving away. The distance between us felt strangely cold.

“Lydia.”

I swallowed. “What?”

“You're frightened.”

“I am not.”

His eyebrow lifted, and a faint smile appeared. “You are a terrible liar.”

I wanted to argue, but the words refused to come. I gathered the blanket around myself and stared at him. His breathing was still heavy, and his hair was disheveled, yet he seemed composed now.

“I don't know what you expect me to say,” I admitted.

“Nothing.”

His answer caught me off guard.

Magnus leaned against the headboard, deliberately leaving space between us. He looked enormous even sitting, his shoulders broad beneath the dim candlelight, but there was no threat in his posture.

“You don't owe me anything,” he said.

My chest tightened. Nobody had told me that.

All my life, I had been made to feel indebted for existing. My uncle reminded me that he had taken me in after my parents died. Patricia expected endless work because she believed I should be grateful for having a roof over my head. Maria treated every kindness as something I had to repay with obedience.

Even my arrival in Bridgevine had been decided by someone else.

I had been traded like an object.

Yet Magnus was telling me that I owed him nothing.

“You're confusing me,” I whispered.

“How?”

“You frighten me.”

“I know.”

“You're arrogant.”

“I've been told.”

“You're cruel.”

His expression tightened, but he did not defend himself.

I lowered my eyes. “And yet sometimes you make me feel safe.”

Silence settled over the room.

When I looked up, the amusement had disappeared from his face entirely. Something much more serious had taken its place.

“You should never have learned fear from the people who were supposed to protect you,” he said.

My throat burned.

I blinked quickly, refusing to cry, but one tear escaped anyway.

Magnus noticed.

He raised his hand slowly, giving me enough time to move away, and brushed the tear from my cheek with his thumb. His touch was unexpectedly gentle, almost reverent.

“I won't force you to do anything.”

I stared at him.

Those words should have made me feel relieved. Instead, they loosened something inside me that I had kept tightly locked for years.

“Why?” I whispered.

“Why what?”

“Why do you care?”

His hand stopped against my cheek.

For several moments, he looked at me. Something complicated passed through his eyes before he answered.

“I don't know.”

His honesty surprised me.

Magnus looked away briefly, his jaw tightening as though admitting the truth was more difficult than fighting an enemy.

“I spent years believing attachment was weakness,” he said. “People leave. People betray you. People you love become weapons in the hands of those who want to destroy you. So I learned not to need anyone.”

“And now?”

His eyes returned to mine.

“Now you are making that very difficult.”

My heart stumbled.

I should have looked away. Instead, I found myself studying the man beneath the title everyone feared. Lord Magnus of Bridgevine was supposed to be heartless, merciless, incapable of tenderness.

Yet here he was, speaking about wounds he had clearly spent years hiding.

“Who hurt you?” I asked.

A shadow crossed his face.

“That is a story for another night.”

I nodded.

Then I surprised myself by moving closer.

Only a little.

Magnus noticed immediately.

His gaze dropped between us before returning to my face. He did not reach for me. He waited.

That simple act affected me more than I wanted to admit.

I placed my hand against his chest.

His heartbeat was strong beneath my palm, steady and powerful. For a moment, neither of us spoke.

“You don't have to be afraid of me,” he murmured.

“I am not afraid.”

His eyebrow rose.

I sighed. “Not as much as before.”

A quiet laugh escaped him.

The sound was unexpected, and I smiled before I could stop myself.

Magnus noticed that too.

“There,” he said softly.

“What?”

“That.”

“What?”

“That smile.”

Heat climbed into my cheeks. “Don't stare.”

“I have every intention of staring.”

I tried to pull my hand away, but his fingers gently caught mine.

He did not tighten his hold. He simply held my hand as though it were something precious.

My heart beat faster.

“You are strange,” I murmured.

“So I've been told.”

“By everyone?”

“Mostly by women who expected me to behave like a gentleman.”

I laughed softly.

The sound seemed to surprise him.

For several seconds, we simply looked at each other, and something inside me shifted. The tension remained, but it was no longer frightening. It felt warmer, threaded with an understanding neither of us seemed ready to name.

I rested my head against his shoulder.

Magnus became completely still.

Then, after a moment, his arm came around me.

The embrace was nothing like I expected. There was no command or demand, no reminder that he was the Alpha Lord and I was merely the omega his uncle had sold. It was simply warm, protective, and safe.

My eyes closed.

I could hear his heartbeat beneath my ear, and somehow that steady rhythm quieted the storm inside my head.

“Magnus?”

“Yes?”

“If I regret what happened tonight…”

“You won't be punished.”

I lifted my head slightly. “Even if I blame you?”

“Yes.”

“And if I hate you tomorrow?”

The corner of his mouth curved.

“Then I suppose I'll have to endure being hated by my own Luna.”

I froze.

“Your Luna?”

Magnus's eyes gleamed with amusement.

“Did I say that?”

“Yes.”

“Then perhaps you should forget it.”

“I don't think I can.”

“Good.”

Before I could ask what he meant, he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss against my forehead.

My breath caught.

It was such a simple gesture, yet it touched something in me that his earlier intensity never had.

Nobody had ever kissed me like that.

Not as though they wanted something.

Not as though I belonged to them.

Just because they wanted me to feel safe.

I looked at him, unsure what to do with the warmth spreading through my chest.

“Why are you being kind to me?”

His expression became unreadable.

“Because you deserve kindness.”

The answer nearly broke me. I lowered my face before he saw the tears forming.

His arm tightened around my shoulders.

I had spent years believing I was unwanted because nobody had proved otherwise. Perhaps loneliness could make even the smallest kindness feel enormous.

Yet there was something frightening about enjoying it.

Because kindness could disappear.

People could leave.

People could betray you.

Magnus seemed to sense the thought troubling me.

“Lydia,” he said quietly, “look at me.”

I did.

“I don't know what tomorrow brings,” he said. “I don't know what you will eventually think of me, and I won't pretend I can promise you a perfect life. But while you are under my protection, nobody will treat you as property again.”

My lips parted.

“Not even you?” I asked.

His gaze sharpened.

“Especially not me.”

Something inside me finally surrendered—not to his authority, but to the possibility that perhaps this man was more complicated than the monster everyone had described.

I settled against him again.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

The candle beside the bed flickered gently, throwing shadows across the walls. Outside, the wind whispered through the trees as though the night itself were guarding our silence.

Eventually, exhaustion began pulling me under.

“Sleep,” Magnus murmured.

I smiled faintly. “Are you ordering me?”

“Yes.”

I lifted my head indignantly.

He chuckled. “There is the stubborn omega I was expecting.”

I wanted to argue, but sleep was winning.

As my eyes closed, I realized something that frightened me more than Magnus's reputation ever had.

I was beginning to trust him.

And perhaps worse, I was beginning to want him in a way that had nothing to do with instinct.

I wanted to know the man behind the title.

I wanted to understand the scars hidden beneath his cruelty.

I wanted to see the smile he rarely showed anyone.

Most dangerously of all, I wanted to believe that when he called me his Luna, perhaps some part of him already meant it.

I fell asleep with my head against his chest, unaware that morning would bring the first warning that our fragile peace was already being watched.

And somewhere beyond the mansion walls, beneath the cover of darkness, someone was waiting.

Waiting for the perfect moment to remind Lord Magnus that every weakness could become a weapon.

  • SOLD TO THE BRUTAL ALPHA LORD OF BRIDGEVINE    Just For Pleasure

MagnusI had always believed that desire was one of the simplest weaknesses to understand. A man saw something he wanted, decided whether it was worth having, and then took what he had chosen without allowing unnecessary emotion to complicate the matter. That was how I had approached Lydia when I first saw her at the market, and that was certainly how I had approached the bargain with Abel. She was beautiful, she had caught my attention, and I had wanted her in my bed; there had been nothing mysterious about it in my mind. Even now, after the unexpected softness of the previous night and the changes I had already noticed in her, I still refused to give the situation a meaning it did not possess. She had barely left the dining hall before I found myself looking toward the doorway she had disappeared through. I picked up one of the reports lying before me and forced my eyes across the first page, but the words blurred together because my mind kept returning to the image of her sitting a

  • SOLD TO THE BRUTAL ALPHA LORD OF BRIDGEVINE    He Doesn't Seem So Bad

LydiaI woke the following morning with the strange realization that I had slept through the entire night without once expecting someone to shout my name. The mattress beneath me was softer than anything I had known, the room was warm, and sunlight filtered through the curtains in pale golden strips that made everything look almost peaceful. For several minutes, I remained beneath the blankets, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling while yesterday returned to me piece by piece: Magnus’s arms around me, his quiet voice promising that I would not be treated as property, and the humiliating truth that some part of me had believed him. That frightened me more than his reputation ever had, because trusting a man who had bought me felt like stepping willingly into a fire and hoping it would not burn.I dressed slowly and spent far too long deciding whether I should leave the bedroom without waiting for permission. Eventually, hunger won the argument, and I made my way toward the dining hall wit

I was not foolish enough to misunderstand the arrangement Uncle Abel had made with the Alpha Lord, but hearing Lord Magnus confirm it so casually made something hot and furious twist inside me.My wolf bristled beneath my skin, finally finding her fire again after being forced into submission by Lord Magnus. That had never happened to us before. No one had ever made my wolf submit. We did not like it.I trudged along behind the servants Lord Magnus had ordered to prepare me, bile rising steadily in my throat as I thought about what awaited me in a few hours.
